The term rhythm & blues emerged during the late 1940s to encompass the

different musical genres performed by black people. Even when this concept is
still valid, to this day, the concept of rhythm & blues comprehends a wider
variety of genres that form the corpus of African American urban styles, such as
soul, blues, funk, and others with a focus on rhythmic ideas.
