The Greatest Challenge in Learning Linguistics
Language is important aspect in society since we are connected through the
language. The language is tied with the human and its environment. Every language
runs with the unique things that trigger people to learn about it. I do believe that all
things in our life has its own challenge, included in learning linguistics.
Linguistics is a study of language and its aspects e.g. the sound, the physical
form or words, the structure even how the language is being process in human brain.
Linguistics is a wide study with its branches both macro and micro linguistics.
According to the book of Hodder and Stoughton entitle Linguistics, micro
linguistics divided into phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
Meanwhile, macro linguistics are sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, applied
linguistics, computational linguistics, stylistics, philosophical linguistics, and
anthropological linguistics.
As a student of English literature, comprehend all-important the aspects of
linguistics both macro and micro linguistics. Besides the basic and fundamental
things in language is should be comprehended as well e.g. grammar (include
structure), vocabulary and history of the language. Being a linguistics, means we
should be creative, to be accurate, be smart, open-minded and flexible either in
language, its aspects or even the culture. For the advance linguistics comprehend
the macro and micro linguistics is a must. Each of this subject has its own challenge
or obstacle e.g. in phonology when we should remember all of the phonetic symbol,
or the airstream mechanism, how the sounds are produces by our body. Morphology
and syntax are also the important aspect in linguistics how the word is created, its
process till it crate a sentence that is told in syntax. Besides, the are also pragmatics
and semantics, study about meaning and utterance of people. In learning semantics
and pragmatics, we need to go deep into the meaning of the utterance, culture and
habits of the language, since those three parts influence the language that is used by
the human. Meanwhile, in macro linguistics we need to learn about society and its
characteristics, pertaining to the language that is used in their daily life.
Every person has their own capability in comprehending the material that is
given by the lecturer. Not all of the subject can be understood easily. Some may
love to learn literature like analysing poetry or story in the movie and etc. but others
may can not comprehend that subject in the same way. I do believe that we can not
force fish to climb the tree to make it equal with the monkey but we know that the
choices have the risk. I do believe when people decided to apply to be a
linguistician and learn linguistics they have prepare their selves. We can not be
perfect in each of these twelfth subject but at least we try to know and understand.
Do not quite for these little obstacles but prove that we can. Where there is a will
there is a way.
