SEARCH ENGINES AND E-MAIL TOOLS


(Basic use of searching skills, effective use of APA citations, e-mail tasks)

SPECIFIC CONTEXT SITUATION

Increasingly, young people don´t see piracy as stealing. One survey found that 86% of teens felt
music piracy was “morally acceptable”.

LET’S FIND SOME RELEVANT INFORMATION TO SHARE!

You are going to use your preferred search engine to search and find specific information regarding
specific topics.

TASK 1
Use of Search engines / APA citations

1. Create a document with your name and name it.


2. Include a page header section and fill out the following information:

 Your name
 Your grade

3. Use a search engine such as www.google.com to find at least 5 web pages that contain
information regarding the presented topic.

4. Extract a short, but relevant piece of information from the pages and summarize the contents
of your topic research in two paragraphs (100 words). Write down these sections in your
document.

5. Using computer’s Screenshot Tool, capture the screen of both Web Pages; then, paste
those into your document.

6. Use the search engine again to find pictures related to your previous research; then, insert
these two images into your document.

7. Insert into the APA references section in your document, the corresponding cite regarding
the Web pages, and the pictures you used for your research.

Use of e-mail tools

1. Open a new tab in the Web Browser of your preference; then, login into your Gmail
account.

2. Compose a new mail with the following requirements:

Subject: MY RESEARCH REPORT (Your name)

3. Write down a short message stating a possible solution you might propose to the following
problem: Last year, the national sleep foundation (US) released a survey showing that
the average teen sleeps just seven and a half hours a night, two hours less than what’s
recommended for healthy brain development. The culprits? Television, laptops and
cellphones in students’ bedrooms

4. Attach a document into the message with images and a list of links that support your possible
solution.

5. Send the message. (Make sure your digital signature is placed along with your mail).
