Abstract

In relation to the issue of water shortages and to conserve water, we decided to think of a
way to recycle water. So this study focuses on filtering water to be used again. We use cotton,
sand, plastic bottles and fish net in making our home constructed filter.

On the first filter, researchers created the filter purely with cotton. On the second filter
they use fish net while on the third filter they use alternation of 4 layers of cotton and 3 layers of
cleaned and dried sand in plastic bottles. After making all 3 filters, they assemble the 3 filters
inside the pipe and connect the pipe in the water container. Lastly the researchers tried filtering
dirty water. They are able to get good result for our handmade filter was able to filter all visible
dirt and was able to make the water clearer and transparent.
INTRODUCTION

Filipinos are not like western countries, because instead of using toilet papers, they use
water and soap to wash our butt after defecating. Also, they use water in our daily household
chores such as dishwashing, floor mopping, garage cleaning, garden watering, toilet flushing and
etc. Due to the things mentioned above consumption of water increases. In order to lessen the
consumption of waste and conserve water researchers have come up with the idea of recycling
used water (bath water, hand washing water, sink water and etc.)

To be able to do such, they applied the process of filtration but instead of buying
commercial or manufactured filter we created our own filter from the things we usually see in
our households.

In addition, Filipinos are experiencing water shortage which makes this investigatory
project more significant.

This project intends to see if the researchers will be able to filter the used water by their
three different kinds of self-constructed filter, they also intend to use it for the second time in the
stated choice in the introduction.

Based on the researcher’s observation, they believe that they will be able to filter the used
water and remove visible dirt and tiny dirt; they can also see that they will be able to use the
water again.

This project entitled "Conserving and Recycling Water through 3 Types of Ménage
Constructed Filter: Its effectiveness," will be able to help and serve water in households. It will
also somehow address the problem in water shortage and wasting of water. As for the people
who will be acquired this filter or project of ours, they will be able to save money from paying
their water usage because they will just be recycling used water.
This study will only be focusing on filtering water from sink and bathroom drainage but won’t
be performing any process than filtration. We will only be using common materials and not
materials containing chemical. Filtered water will only be applicable to reuse in:

-Gardening -Hand washing

-Garage cleaning -House chores

-Flushing toilet -Laundry

Meanwhile it is strictly not for ingestion for it’s not a potable water.

METHODOLOGY

The subject of the science investigatory project (SIP) that we conducted was conserving
water using three different kinds of filter. This SIP was done in three different houses of our
members. The participants of this SIP were 5 female students from San Francisco High School.

Filtering used water is the objective of this study and the problem in this experiment is
how efficient will this project can be.

The things that we used for our SIP are the following:

• Straight PVC pipe (2.5 inches diameter) •Cotton

•Elbow PVC pipe •Plastic Bottle

•Container of water •Neltex

•Sand •Candle

•Fishnet •Scissors

•Glue stick •Cutter

Upon the creation of our Science Investigatory Project (SIP), the following are the things that
they did to finish their work:

1.) Purchased all the materials needed for our SIP like plum and pipe fitting;

2.) constructed three different types of filter;

Filter 1- made of compressed cotton in a round container with 2.4 diameters.

Filter 2- Fish net

Filter 3- they inserted alternated layers of cotton and sand (which was rinsed and
dried). All in there was 4 layers of cotton and 3 layers of sand.

3.) tested filter 1 and filter 3;

Filter 1 Filter 3
4.) Recycled container of water and cut holes to fit the pipe for it to catch the water that is
being filtered.

Filter 3- they inserted alternated layers of cotton and sand (which was rinsed and dried).
All in there was 4 layers of cotton and 3 layers of sand.

5.) put the filters inside the PVC pipes;

Filter 1 Filter 2 Filter 3

6.) Assembled the elbow pipe and straight pipe using Neltex, let it dry and tried filtering
water to see if there were leaks
7.) connected the pipe with filter to the container;

8.) made a stand for to support the long straight PVC pipe;

9.) Tried filtering with the ensemble complete project;

10.) Installed basin to make it look more realistic;

Conservation of water through the use of menagerie filter is the aim of this science
investigatory project (SIP). Based on this research, filter can lessen the contamination of water.
This research also contain hypothesis and variable that can be manipulated by the researcher
which proves that the type of this research is experimental research.

The statistical treatment of this research is qualitative data analysis because our SIP was
conducted not on statistic method like survey. Instead, this research was done through searching
and connecting different ideas that come up to filtering dirty water using natural materials.
Data and Analysis

As the researchers conducted this research, they performed three trials to see if the filter
can absorb water and make it cleaner. On the first attempt of screening the water, it works out
well. The water is clearer than the water poured to filtrate. The second time that they tried there's
an implication happened to the water filter. The water that they poured didn't filtered completely
because the cotton and sand inside our filter was being budge to its position.On the last trial , the
filtering process succeed. The researchers fix the position of the sand and cotton to make the
water filtered successfully. The testing of this investigatory project went sufficiently.

Discussion

The investigatory project that the researchers made will help to reduce the water
consumption. Hydrologist Petra Döll from Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main has made a
new estimate on global groundwater depletion at 113,000 million cubic meters per year for the
period from 2000 to 2009. This statement of Hydrologist Petra Döll proves that people used a big
amount of water per year. This research could support the conservation of water. It could be a
benefit for the consumers to lessen their expenses on using filtered water.

Conclusion

Conservation of water is really important so people can't suffer from sudden water
shortage or interruption especially here in the Philippines.

In this study, it shows how the three layered constructed filter made from sand and cotton
can filter used water. This project aims to conserve and reuse water to lessen the amount of
money being spent on our daily life. The filtered water from our self-constructed filter can be
used to clean floors, toilet, dishes and many more. Due to the layered filters placed inside the
plum, visible particles and dirt can no longer pass through. The filters consist of materials that
block the dirt from flowing through the container of filtered water. We therefore conclude that
this investigatory project can remove particles and dirt from used water.
