The Ordinal

The Form and Manner of

Making, Ordaining, and Consecrating
Bishops, Priests, and Deacons
THE PREFACE.
IT is evident unto all men, diligently reading Holy Scripture and ancient Authors, that from the Apostles'
time there have been these Orders of Ministers in Christ's Church,—Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. Which
Offices were evermore had in such reverend estimation, that no man might presume to execute any of them,
except he were first called, tried, examined, and known to have such qualities as are requisite for the same;
and also by public Prayer, with Imposition of Hands, were approved and admitted thereunto by lawful
Authority. And therefore, to the intent that these Orders may be continued, and reverently used and
esteemed in this Church, no man shall be accounted or taken to be a lawful Bishop, Priest, or Deacon, in
this Church, or suffered to execute any of the said Functions, except he be called, tried, examined, and
admitted thereunto, according to the Form hereafter following, or hath had Episcopal Consecration or
Ordination.
And none shall be admitted a Deacon, Priest, or Bishop, except he be of the age which the Canon in that
case provided may require.
And the Bishop, knowing either by himself, or by sufficient testimony, any Person to be a man of virtuous
conversation, and without crime, and, after examination and trial, finding him sufficiently instructed in the
Holy Scripture, and otherwise learned as the Canons require, may, at the times appointed, or else, on
urgent occasion, upon some other day, in the face of the Church, admit him a Deacon, in such manner and
form as followeth.

Celebrant Let us pray.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are
hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love
thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 4
Celebrant Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith.
THOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This
is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Kyrie Willan

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And with thy spirit.
Celebrant Let us pray.

Collect of the Day

ALMIGHTY God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people,
illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may
be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with
you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The first lesson is written in sixth chapter of the Book of Isaiah, beginning at the first verse.
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the
train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he
covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another
and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory!”
Page 5
And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house
was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I
dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lordof hosts!”
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with
tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your
guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then
I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

“‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;

keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
Make the heart of this people dull,
and their ears heavy,
and blind their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”
Then I said, “How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until cities lie waste
without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
and the land is a desolate waste,
and the Lord removes people far away,
and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
And though a tenth remain in it,
it will be burned again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
whose stump remains
when it is felled.”
The holy seed is its stump.
Here endeth the Lesson.

Page 6
Psalm 40:1-11
I waited patiently upon the Lord; *
he stooped to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; *
he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God; *
many shall see, and stand in awe,
and put their trust in the Lord.
Happy are they who trust in the Lord! *
they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.
Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God!
how great your wonders and your plans for us! *
there is none who can be compared with you.
Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! *
but they are more than I can count.
In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure *
(you have given me ears to hear you);
Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, *
and so I said, “Behold, I come.
In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: *
‘I love to do your will, O my God;
your law is deep in my heart.’”
I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; *
behold, I did not restrain my lips;
and that, O Lord, you know.
Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; *
I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the
great congregation.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The epistle is written in the first chapter of St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, beginning at
the first verse.
Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,
To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints
together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord
and ours:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in
Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge—even as the
testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait
for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our
Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Here endeth the Epistle.

Gospel Hymn - To God be the glory, great things he hath done

The Holy Gospel is written in the first chapter of the Gospel According to St. John, beginning at
the twenty-ninth verse.
People Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Page 9
The day after John baptized Jesus, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb
of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who
ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came
baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit
descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent
me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he
who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he
walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they
followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And
they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come
and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day,
for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew,
Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the
Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are
Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Nicene Creed

(The people stand.)
I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible
and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his
Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not
made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men
and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the
Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He
suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And
ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with
glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe
in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the
Prophets: And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the
remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of the world to come.
Amen.

The Form and Manner of Making Deacons

¶ When the day appointed by the Bishop is come, there shall be a Sermon, or Exhortation, declaring the
Duty and Office of such as come to be admitted Deacons; how necessary that Order is in the Church of
Christ, and also, how the People ought to esteem them in their Office.

¶ The Sermon being ended, a Priest shall present unto the Bishop, sitting in his chair near to the Holy
Table, such as desire to be ordained Deacons, each of them being decently habited, saying these words,

REVEREND Father in God, I present unto you this person present, to be admitted Deacon.

Jesse Tyler Barkalow

¶ The Bishop

TAKE heed that the persons, whom ye present unto us, be apt and meet, for their learning and godly
conversation, to exercise their Ministry duly, to the honour of God, and the edifying of his Church.

¶ The Priest shall answer,

I HAVE inquired concerning him, and also examined him, and think him so to be.

¶ Then the Bishop shall say unto the People,

BRETHREN, if there be any of you who knoweth any Impediment, or notable Crime, in any of these
persons presented to be ordered Deacons, for the which he ought not to be admitted to that Office, let
him come forth in the Name of God, and show what the Crime or Impediment is.

¶ And if any great Crime or Impediment be objected, the Bishop shall cease from Ordering that person,
until such time as the party accused shall be found clear of that Crime.

¶ Then the Bishop (commending such as shall be found meet to be Ordered, to the Prayers of the
congregation) shall, with the Clergy and People present, say the Litany for Ordinations.

Page 12
(The people kneel.)

The Litany for Ordinations

O GOD the Father,

Have mercy upon us.
O God the Son,
Have mercy upon us.
O God the Holy Ghost,
Have mercy upon us.
O holy Trinity, one God,
Have mercy upon us.

WE beseech thee to hear us, good Lord; and that it may please thee to grant peace to the whole world,
and to thy Church;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to sanctify and bless thy holy Church throughout the world;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to inspire all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, with love of thee and of thy truth;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to endue all Ministers of thy Church with devotion to thy glory and to the
salvation of souls;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to bless these thy servants, now to be admitted to the Order of Deacons, and
to pour thy grace upon them; that they may duly execute their Office to the edifying of thy Church,
and to the glory of thy holy Name;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to guide by thy indwelling Spirit those whom thou dost call to the Ministry
of thy Church; that they may go forward with courage, and persevere unto the end;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to increase the number of the Ministers of thy Church, that the Gospel may
be preached to all people;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to hasten the fulfilment of thy purpose, that thy Church may be one;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.
Page 13
That it may please thee to grant that we, with all thy saints, may be partakers of thy everlasting
kingdom;
We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Minister. Hearken unto our voice, O Lord, when we cry unto thee;
Answer. Have mercy upon us and hear us.

Minister. O Lord, arise, help us;

Answer. And deliver us for thy Name's sake.

Minister. Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness;

Answer. And let thy saints sing with joyfulness.

Minister. Lord, hear our prayer;

Answer. And let our cry come unto thee.

Let us pray.

GOD, who dost ever hallow and protect thy Church; Raise up therein, through thy Spirit, good and
faithful stewards of the mysteries of Christ, that by their ministry and example thy people may abide
in thy favour and be guided in the way of truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth
with thee in the unity of the same Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Collect.
ALMIGHTY God, who by thy divine providence hast appointed divers Orders of Ministers in thy
Church, and didst inspire thine Apostles to choose into the Order of Deacons the first Martyr Saint
Stephen, with others; Mercifully behold these thy servants now called to the like Office and
Administration: so replenish them with the truth of thy Doctrine, and adorn them with innocency of
life, that, both by word and good example, they may faithfully serve thee in this Office, to the glory
of thy Name, and the edification of thy Church; through the merits of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who
liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and for ever. Amen.

(The people sit.)

Page 14
The Epistle. 1 Timothy iii. 8.
LIKEWISE must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of
filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved;
then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave,
not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their
children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to
themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¶ Then, the People being seated, the Bishop shall examine every one of those who are to be Ordered, in the
presence of the People, after this manner following

DO you trust that you are inwardly moved by the Holy Ghost to take upon you this Office and
Ministration, to serve God for the promoting of his glory, and the edifying of his people?
Answer. I trust so.

Bishop. Do you think that you are truly called, according to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, and
according to the Canons of this Church, to the Ministry of the same?
Answer. I think so.

Bishop. Are you persuaded that the Holy Scriptures contain all Doctrine required as necessary for
eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ?
Answer. I am so persuaded.

Bishop. Will you diligently read the same unto the people assembled in the Church where you shall
be appointed to serve?
Answer. I will.

Bishop. It appertaineth to the Office of a Deacon, in the Church where he shall be appointed to serve,
to assist the Priest in Divine Service, and specially when he ministereth the Holy Communion, and
to help him in the distribution thereof; and to read Holy Scriptures and Homilies in the Church; and
to instruct the youth in the Catechism; in the absence of the Priest to baptize infants; and to preach,
if he be admitted thereto by the Bishop. And furthermore, it is his Office, where provision is so made,
to search for the sick, poor, and impotent people of the Parish, that they may be relieved with the alms
of the Parishioners, or others. Will you do this gladly and willingly?
Answer. I will so do, by the help of God.

Page 15
Bishop. Will you apply all your diligence to frame and fashion your own lives, and the lives of your
families, according to the Doctrine of Christ; and to make both you selves and them, as much as in
you lieth, wholesome examples of the flock of Christ?
Answer. I will so do, the Lord being my helper.

Bishop. Will you reverently obey your Bishop, and other chief Ministers, who, according to the
Canons of the Church, may have the charge and government over you; following with a glad mind
and will their godly admonitions?
Answer. I will endeavour so to do, the Lord being my helper.

(The people stand.)

¶ Then, the People standing, the Bishop shall lay his Hands severally upon the Head of every one to be
made Deacon, humbly kneeling before him, and shall say,

TAKE thou Authority to execute the Office of a Deacon in the Church of God committed unto thee;
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

¶ Then shall the Bishop deliver to him the New Testament, saying,

TAKE thou Authority to read the Gospel in the Church of God, and to preach the same, if thou be
thereto licensed by the Bishop himself.

¶ Then one of them, appointed by the Bishop, shall read the Gospel.

The Gospel. St. Luke xii. 35.

LET your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; and ye yourselves like unto men that wait
for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may
open unto him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find
watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and
will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch,
and find them so, blessed are those servants.

¶ Then shall the Bishop proceed in the Communion; and all who are Ordered shall tarry, and
receive the Holy Communion the same day, with the Bishop.

Offertory Anthem St. Gabriel's Choir

For You, O Lord, Have Delivered My Soul from Death

For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may
walk before the Lord in the land of the living; I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for
mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. The cords of death entangled
me, the anguish of the grace came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the
name of the Lord: “O Lord, save me! O Lord, save me! The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full
of compassion. The Lord protects the simple-hearted; when I was in great need he saved me. Be at rest
once more, O my soul. for the Lord has been good to you. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the
Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

(The people stand.)

At the Presentation
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Old 100th
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Our father's God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing America

Long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light:
Protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

Then the Celebrant shall say,

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and
supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our
alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty;
beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and
concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy
Word, and live in unity and godly love.
Page 17
We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian rulers, that they may truly
and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance
of thy true religion, and virtue.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and other Ministers, that they may, both by their life
and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.

That it may please thee to bless these thy servants, now to be admitted to the Order of Deacons, and
to pour thy grace upon them; that they may duly execute their Office, to the edifying of thy Church,
and the glory of thy holy Name;

And to all thy People give thy heavenly grace; [and especially ____] and to this congregation here
present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly
serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who,
in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, [especially ____].

And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, [especially
____]; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service, and to give us grace
so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant
this, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Then the Celebrant shall say,

YE who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors,
and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in
his holy ways: Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your
humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We
acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most
grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty,
Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are
heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The
burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever
hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 18
The Bishop when present, or the Priest, stands and says,
ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to
all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and
deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting
life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him.
COME unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. (Matthew 11:28)

So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Hear also what Saint Paul saith.

This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Christ Jesus came into the world to
save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15)

Hear also what Saint John saith.

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the
Propitiation for our sins. (1 John 2:1-2)

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them up unto the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
People It is meet and right so to do.

IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks
unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God.

THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify
thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

Sanctus Willan

Page 19
ALL glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst
give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there,
by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and
satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in
the night in which he was betrayed, he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and
gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you; Do this in
remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave
it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for
you, and for many, for the remission of sins; Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of
me.

WHEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine
Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath
commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty
resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable
benefits procured unto us by the same.

AND we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness,
vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread
and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in
remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood.

AND we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus
Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins,
and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our
souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that
we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most
precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction,
and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And although we are unworthy,
Page 20
through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our
bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ
our Lord; By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee,
O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As
we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own
righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather
up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have
mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and
to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed
through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Administration of Holy Communion
It is the custom of this Church that all baptized persons who come in faith and penitence are welcome to receive the
Sacrament of Holy Communion. One may receive the wine either by intinction (dipping the wafer in the cup) or drinking
it directly from the common cup. Children and adults who do not wish to receive Communion may come for a blessing,
signifying this by crossing your arms across your chest. (Consecrated gluten-free wafers are available simply by
indicating the need for such to the priest.

Communion Hymn 664 - My Shepherd will supply my need

Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748); para. of Psalm 23

Music: Resignation, American folk melody

Then the Celebrant shall say,

Let us pray.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to
feed us who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious
Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour
and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of
thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of
thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And we humbly
beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy
fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without
end. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis

¶ Then the Bishop shall say,
ALMIGHTY God, giver of all good things, who of thy great goodness hast vouchsafed to accept and
take these thy servants unto the Office of Deacons in thy Church; Make them, we beseech thee, O
Lord, to be modest, humble, and constant in their Ministration, to have a ready will to observe all
spiritual Discipline; that they, having always the testimony of a good conscience, and continuing ever
stable and strong in thy Son Christ, may so well behave themselves in this inferior Office, that they
may be found worthy to be called unto the higher Ministries in thy Church; through the same thy Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and honour, world without end. Amen.

¶ Then Bishop gives the blessing,

THE Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge
and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

¶ And here it must be declared unto the Deacon, that he must continue in that Office of a Deacon the space of a
whole year, (except for reasonable causes it shall otherwise seem good unto the Bishop,) to the intent he may be
perfect and well expert in the things appertaining to the Ecclesiastical Administration. In executing whereof if he
be found faithful and diligent, he may be admitted by his Diocesan to the Order of Priesthood, at the times
appointed in the Canon; or else, on urgent occasion, upon some other day, in the face of the Church, in such
manner and form as hereafter followeth.
