The project is now being tracked at a low frequency as the key company information has been listed and the
project has passed the 50% completion mark.
Description
The project involves the construction of a waste-to-energy plant in Bee’ah’s waste management centre in
Sharjah, UAE. The facility will incinerate up to 37.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per hour to
generate 30 megawatts (MW) of energy and will have the capacity to divert as much as 300,000 tonnes of
solid waste from landfill each year. The facility is being managed by Emirates Waste to Energy Company, a
50:50 joint venture formed by Masdar and Bee’ah in 2017.
The plant will be located adjacent to Beeah’s existing Material Recovery Facility in Sharjah, where the
emirate’s waste is collected, sorted, recycled and, where necessary, sent to landfills. Upon completion, it
will be the world's largest advanced thermal energy-from-waste facility. Sharjah WTE plant is expected to
supply electricity to 28,000 households, while diverting 300,000t of residual waste a year from UAE’s
landfills, over an estimated operational life of 30 years.
The waste-to-energy process converts the waste into produced heat which is then used to drive an
electrical turbine. The net electrical power produced will be up to 30 MW which will be supplied directly to
the Sharjah electricity grid. The flue gas of waste processing will be environmentally treated before being
released into the atmosphere.
The plant will be linked to Beeah’s auxiliary waste-to-energy project, which will eventually produce a total
of 90MW and will be supplied to the Sharjah electricity grid. The project will help Sharjah reach its “zero
waste-to-landfill” target by 2020 – and the UAE deliver on its 2021 goal of diverting 75% of solid waste
from landfills. The new plant has also been designed to meet the strictest environmental standards,
complying with the European Union’s Best Available Techniques, widely recognized as the global
standard.

May 28, 2019 note System The Facility is being managed by Emirates Waste to
Energy Company, a joint venture formed by Masdar
and Bee’ah in 2017. French engineering company
Constructions Industrielles de la Méditerranée (CNIM)
was appointed in May 2017 to design, build and
operate the facility and the plant’s waste supply
agreement and power purchasing agreement was
signed with Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority in
2017.

The monthly and cumulative “estimated percentage completion and spend” graphs are calculated using a series of algorithms
that have been specifically developed for each project type, in consultation with leading engineering consultants and
contractors. Due to the specific and unique considerations on a project and the dynamic nature of construction the above
graphs may at times vary from the actual progress at the site.
