 Product Development
Product 1 (2018-2019 batch)
 Under the supervision of our faculty, an attempt had been made by our final
year students in developing a natural fiber composites product for replacing
the existing synthetic fiber helmet in the market.

Existing Product Developed Product

Figure 5.5 Product 1

Description:
1. Fabrication of natural banana fiber epoxy composites was made and tested its
potentiality as reinforcement for polymer composite industries.
2. Mechanical properties like tensile, flexural, impact and hardness showed better
results with fiber content up to 40 wt.% and later declined in value due to
incompatibility between the fiber and matrix.
3. Optimum fiber content 40 wt.% is selected for making the product and made
with the help of an expert in a helmet industry at Trichy.
4. Static and Dynamic analysis were done using ANSYS and the specific properties
of banana fiber epoxy composite ensured its potential for structural applications.

Product 2 (2017-2018 batch)

 Under the supervision of our faculty, an attempt had been made by our final
year students in developing a natural fiber product for replacing the synthetic
bike visor existing in two wheeler as shown below.
Existing Product Developed Product

Figure 5.6 Product 2

Description:
1. Discarded non-toxic tamarind and areca fruit fiber is tested for its potentiality as
hybrid reinforcement for polymer composite.
2. Influence of fiber content on the mechanical properties, such as tensile strength,
flexural strength, impact strength and hardness are significant and increased with
fiber content up to 30 wt.% and drops afterwards due to improper bonding features.
3. Optimum fiber content 30 wt.% and other proportions are further authorized by
microscopic examination, where proper and improper bonding between fiber and
matrix was visualized.
4. Using the optimum fiber content, the product was made with the help of an expert
in a research and development laboratory at Nagercoil.
5. Specific properties of areca and tamarind fruit fiber reinforced polymer hybrid
composite promotes the potentiality of agro-waste fiber for automotive applications.

Product 3 (2016-2017 batch)

 Under the supervision of our faculty, an attempt had been made by our final
year students in developing a natural bio-composites product for replacing the
synthetic bike headlight doom existing in two wheeler as depicted below.

Existing Product Developed Product

Figure 5.7 Product 3

Description:
1. Under-utilized moringa oleifera fiber tested for its potentiality as reinforcement
for polymer composite products.
2. SEM images confirmed the presence of micro fibril with minimum angle
contributing good strength and honey walled surface promoted better bonding
characteristics with polymer matrix.
3. Thermal analysis confirmed stability of moringa fiber up to 240°C which is well
above polymerization temperature and ensures fiber withstanding capacity during
composite fabrication.
4. Impact results showed increase in strength up to 15% fiber content and then
decreased with uplift of fiber content. Hence, 15% fiber content is best suited for
light duty applications.
5. Using optimum fiber content, product was made with the help of an expert in a
research and development laboratory at Nagercoil.
