Course Description:
This course will introduce the students with basic electronics devices and circuits. It
covers basic semiconductor diode, transistors and MOSFETs. Student will also learn
basic Operational amplifier working and its various linear and non linear applications.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
The primary objective of this course is to develop an in-depth understanding of the
design principles and applications of electronic devices and circuits. Student will also
learn design of DC power supply and basic electronics switching circuits.

COURSE CONTENTS:

Unit-1: Semiconductor Devices:


PN Junction theory, Semiconductor Diode:- P-N junction diode, mechanism of current
flow in P-N junction, drift and diffusion currents, depletion layer, potential barrier,
breakdown, semiconductor diode characteristics, Wave shaping circuits – clippers,
clampers, different types of diode: power diode, zener diodes, varactor diodes, tunnel
diode, LED’s and photo diodes.

Unit-2: Rectifiers and Filters:


P-N junction diode as rectifier, half wave rectifier, full wave rectifier, bridge rectifier,
Ripple factor, PIV, rectification efficiency, comparison, merits and demerits of different
types of rectifier.
Passive filters, Filter circuits for power supply, Inductor filter, Capacitor filter, LC
filter, Multiple LC filter.

Unit-3: Bipolar Transistor And Biasing Techniques:


Concept of bipolar transistor as a two junction and three terminal device having two
kinds of charge carriers, PNP and NPN transistors, their symbols, concept of leakage
current, effect of temperature on leakage of current, common base configurations (CB),
common emitter configuration (CE), common collector configuration, different types of
biasing circuits for fixing the operation points, single stage CE amplifier circuit with
proper biasing components.

Unit-4: Field Effect Transistor (FET):


Introduction, Construction, Operation, V-I Characteristics, Transfer Characteristics
and Drain Characteristics of Junction field Effect Transistor (JFET) and Metal Oxide
Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET), Depletion MOSFET, Enhancement
MOSFET.

Unit-5: Operational Amplifier:


Operational amplifier basics, practical Op-amp circuits & characteristics, slew rate,
bandwidth, offset voltage, bias current, application, inverting, non-inverting amplifier,
summer, average, differentiator, integrator, instrumentation amplifier, comparators,
Schmitt trigger, 555 timers and its application.

Course Description:
This course offers the verification of working of basic electronics devices and circuits.
It covers basic semiconductor diode, transistors, MOSFETs and operational amplifier
based circuits and their various linear and non linear applications.

Course Objective:
The objectives of this lab course are:
1. To understand operation of semiconductor devices.
2. To understand DC analysis and AC models of semiconductor devices.
3. To apply concepts for the design of Regulators and Amplifiers
4. To verify the theoretical concepts through laboratory and simulation experiments.
5. To implement mini projects based on concept of electronics circuit concepts.

List of Experiments:
1.
a. Identification and testing of electronic components such as resistor,
inductor, capacitor, diode, transistor and different types of switches used
in Electronic circuits
b. Measurement of resistances using multimeter and their comparison with
colour code values
2. V-I characteristics of a Semiconductor diode and to calculate its static and
dynamic resistance.
3.
a. V-I characteristics of a zener diode and finding its reverse breakdown
voltage
b. Fabrication of a zener diode voltage stabilizer circuit using PCB
4. Observation of input and output wave shapes of a half-wave rectifier and
verification of relationship between dc output and ac input voltage
5. Observation of input and output wave shapes of a full wave rectifier and
verification and relationship between dc output and ac input voltage.
6. Observation of input and output wave shapes of a full wave rectifier with (i) shunt
capacitor (ii) series inductor (iii)  filter circuits
7. Plotting input and output characteristics of a transistor in CB configuration
8. Plotting input and output characteristics of a transistor in CE configuration
9. Measurement of operating point in case of
i. Fixed biased circuit
ii. Potential divider biasing circuit and to observe the effect of temperature
variation on the operating point.
10. To measure the voltage, gain and band width by plotting frequency response curve
of a single stage amplifier using CE configuration at different loads.
11. To study the effect of coupling capacitor on lower cut off frequency and upper cut
off frequency by plotting frequency response curve of a two stage RC coupled
amplifier.
12. Study and plot V-I characteristics of a FETs.

Course Outcomes:

After successful completion of the course student will be able to:

1. Understand the current voltage characteristics of semiconductor devices,


2. Analyze dc circuits and relate ac models of semiconductor devices with their
physical Operation,
3. Design and analyze of electronic circuits.
