Chapter I

Introduction to the Study

The effects of being a scholar to students has been investigated

in a series of studies for over the past decades and has been
reported to have a significant benefits on their success. In
previous studies about the impact of having a scholarship to
students has been focused on the positive effects rather than
the impediment it could induce.
This study investigated the encumbrances of having a scholarship
to college students especially those taking engineering courses,
the burden and pressure students received while striving to
finish their education.
Although scholarships aim to assist or cover costs of pursuing
those engineering courses and provide a list of benefits for
recipient such as decreasing the financial burden of rising
tuition costs and also allow students to focus more on their
studies rather than doing part-time jobs to support their
education. This study is framed around the tension and
unproductivity of students, the factors affecting their academic
studies as well as their daily lives and how they manage to cope
with the problems they are facing.

Background of the Study and Theoretical Framework

In 2014, 424,143 students are the number of enrollment for
Engineering and Technology related courses (Commission on Higher
Education, “Higher Education Data: 2014”) Tracer Study of
Engineering Graduates of One Higher Education Institution in
the Philippines for Academic Year 2009-2012 revealed that the
engineering graduates are highly employable with 95.54 percent
employment rating, with regular status and presently working as
associate professionals in the Philippine manufacturing
companies related to their college degrees who found their first
job as walk-in applicants and stayed on their jobs for more than
three (3) years; means that mostly of the students who graduated
with these courses we’re able to find job.
Amidst of this, the road to be an engineer can get really tough,
and it gets even tougher once you have to struggle in different
challenges.
Not all students taking up these courses get their money through
their own pockets. Scholarships are present to aid their
financial needs but the effects of being a scholar to students

are both on positive and negative. In order to support these

students, it is important to know the struggles they are facing.

Statement of the Problem and the Hypothesis

The study aim to understand the lived experiences of engineering

students as scholars and their ways to cope up with it.
Generally, this study intends to answer the following questions:

1.Why did you have chosen engineering course?

2.What are the benefits of taking up this kind of course as
scholar?
3. What are the impacts of having a scholarship?
4.What are the changes in the ways of living of being an
engineering student?
5.What are the difficulties you need to encounter in order to
sustain your scholarship?
5. How would you deal with these circumstances?

Significance of the Study

The primary focus of this study is to assess the experiences of
engineering students as scholars, the effects of being a scholar
to their daily lives, how they manage to sustain their
scholarship, the pressure it brings as a scholar and how they
cope these challenges.
It is important to assess these experiences to understand the
pros and cons of being a scholar and not only the positive side
it gives. Specifically, the study examines the contradictory
effect of the studies that only shows the benefits as a scholar.
Study results may shed light to these topics and provide
awareness to other students who are planning to apply in a
scholarship. This aims to guide students especially those who
will take engineering courses, for future references as well as
to prepare them on the difficulties they may encounter with
their studies.

Definition of Terms
Engineering- is a scientific field and job that involves taking
our scientific understanding of the natural world and using it
to invent, design, and build things to solve problems and
achieve practical goals. This can include the development of
roads, bridges, cars, planes, machines, tools, processes, and
computers. The things engineers build are called technology.
Without technology, the modern world simply wouldn't exist.
We're surrounded by the work of engineers practically every
moment of our lives.
There are many different types of engineering. The most
significant ones are civil engineering, mechanical engineering,
electrical engineering, and chemical engineering.

Delimitation of the Study

This study is focused and limited only to the Life

Experiences of Engineering Students as Scholars and Their Ways
of Coping up with it. The participants of this study are
composed of college students who are taking engineering courses
and ate scholars as well within Iloilo area . They have been
selected as participants of this study because of their
personal life experiences and how they overcome all their
challenges as engineering students. The researchers used an
open-ended question as their instrument in understanding the
perspectives of engineering students . The study is conducted
from(date)2019 to (date)2020.
