The life and struggles of Katniss

The Hunger Games Blog Ch1- Ch5

In The Hunger Games, a dystopian novel, many unexpected events happen and
are even introduced in the first chapters. Not only does the reaping occur, but we also
meet the characters Katniss, Prim, Gale, Peeta, Haymitch, and Effie Trinket throughout
these chapters and serve great importance in Katniss´ life. Being the main character,
Katniss demonstrates her force and ability to stay strong and fight for the one she loves,
she is even willing to do anything for her family. In chapter one, it is portrayed that
Katniss goes along with Gale to hunt and trade animals or items for a little source of
food in order to feed their families. Also, when Prim, Katniss´ sister, was chosen during
the reaping Katniss was willing to volunteer for her sister and potentially sacrifice her life
for her to be protected and alive. When doing this, Katniss is seen as a strong hero, even
though she does cover her emotions to convey fierceness and bravery, she is protective
over her family and is the provider of her loved ones.

Moving on, after the reaping when both Katniss and Peeta were traveling from
District 12 to Panem also known as the Capitol, where the Hunger Games takes place,
Katniss describes how District 12 looks different than Panem which shows the gap

between rich and poor. Even when arriving on the train they could tell the difference for
example, in chapter 3 when looking at their ¨fancy¨ rooms Katniss describes the
amazing differences she sees, they were ¨each given our chambers that have a bedroom,
a dressing area, and a private bathroom with hot and cold running water.¨ Then when
she notices all the goodness that is surrounding her, she connects it with her own life and
states that her family doesn’t ¨have hot water at home, unless we boil it¨. (42)
Although Katniss is used to taking care of her family, she observes that people like
Haymitch don´t need to work hard for what they need instead he just asks for it
without moving a muscle unlike her, where she needs to work to even get a little piece of
bread to feed her whole family. Now that Katniss is living a different life she compares
her present life to her past and notices the exploitation of the poor and working-class
and will continue to compare throughout the novel.
