A. Inspection and testing of spring compression during brake overhaul is at the option of
B. Operators, at their option, can change their procedures and not do the return spring
compression test. Instead they can use the brake functional test for verification of
correct spring operation.
C. Operators can choose not to disassemble the spring holder subassemblies during an
overhaul if they have no history of spring, spring holder or return pin failures. A
thorough visual examination of the spring holder subassemblies is sufficient to control
damage from corrosion.
D. EXCEPTION!
When a brake assembly in repair is known to have been overheated, or show signs of
an overheated condition:
- blistered paint, paint that has turned to a darker color,
- hydraulic fluid that is thicker than normal, etc.
or has damage to the spring, spring holder or return pin:
test the spring for compression strength, and inspect the spring holder as specified in
the applicable Component Maintenance Manual.
