402: Software Engineering and Management

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. describe the principal tasks of software project managers, and basic concepts in software
projects.
2. plan software projects, including risk and quality management.
3. explain basic concepts and principles of components of software engineering, e.g., of
requirements engineering, system design, software implementation, testing and
maintenance, and how these components contribute to the software process.
4. evaluate and relate different software processes, system models and architectural designs
and assess their suitability in a given context.
5. explain, using theory of group dynamics, how the project manager can act to influence
success of the project.

Course Content:

Module 1 – PROJECT PLANNING 8 Hours

Introduction, Project Management Techniques, Software Pricing Techniques, Project Planning,


Software Project Scheduling, Estimation Techniques, Case Studies.

Module II - QUALITY MANAGEMENT 6 Hours

Software Quality, Software Standards, Review and Inspections, Software measurement and
metrics, Case Studies.

Module III – CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT 6 Hours

Change management, Version management, System Building, Release Management, Software


Configuration Management Tools, Case Studies.

Module – IV PROCESS IMPROVEMENT 10 Hours

The process improvement, Process measurement, Process analysis, Process change, Risk
Management, Managing People, Team work, The CMMI process improvement framework, Case
Studies.
