7.1 Introduction
– 7.6 Inference
– Listeners participate actively in the construction of meaning, in
particular by using inferences to fill out the text and render a
proper interpretation of a speaker´s meaning.
– Examples of inference with anaphora, a special subtype of
coreference, a referential relation between expressions where they
both refer to the same entity.
– There are many types of coreference: a nominal may be repeated;
there may be an independent nominal, used as an epithet, or very
commonly, an anaphoric pronoun may be used.
Anaphoric pronouns differ from full nominals in that they have no
independent reference and must rely on an antecedent.
– I fell down a hole yesterday. It was very deep.
– I saw my mother this morning. The old woman didn´t recognize
me.
– I trod on a snail this morning. The poor thing died.
– Very commonly interpreting anaphora across sentences involves
inference.
– There are other inferential links routinely made between sentences.
Some were called bridging inferences:
a. I looked into the room. The ceiling was very high.
b. John went out at noon. The park was beautiful.
– In these examples, the nominal in bold occurs with a definite
article, showing that the speaker assumes that referent is accessible
to the listener, that is, it is given.
– The question is: how did this nominal become part of given
information? The listener makes a bridging inference which
links the nominal to the preceding sentence and creates coherence.
The basis for the inferences is background knowledge. People know
that rooms usually have ceilings, and that one of the conventional
places to go for a walk is in a park. With this knowledge, the
listener can infer.
– What the listeners seem to be doing here is making inferences to
preserve a notion of coherence in what they are told. Speakers
seem confident that their listeners will do this and they take
advantage of it to speak less explicitly than they might. Knowing
that their listeners will flesh out (rellenarán) their utterances with
inferences gives speakers the freedom to imply something rather
than state it.
7.9 Summary
