GUIDELINES FOR
TENTH SEMESTER OF FIVE YEARS
BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE
DISSERTATION PROGRAMME

INTRODUCTION: “A major project selected by the students in the area of their interest
and attempted after detailed analytical study of the chosen
topic/subject. The project is to be done under faculty guidance and
presented in a graphic form, model, computer generated graphics and
report. In this project the student is expected to individually
synthesize all that is learnt in the previous semesters, conduct
investigative research through library and other resources, co-
ordinate all pertinent architectural issues with the design concept and
objectives to reach a viable solution for the resolution of the selected
problem”. (Handbook of Professional Documents 2013; Council of

PART – I
2.1 The Internal Guide should be a Registered Architect with CoA under the architect
Act 1972 .The Internal guide should have minimum Associate level professor
teaching or professional experience. And should be part of the regular / visiting
faculty of A.P.I.E.D. and be approved by the Dissertation Committee.
2.2(a) The students should choose any one person, other than the Internal Guide to
become an External Guide who is an Architect registered with CoA under the
architect act 1972. The External guide should have atleast Ten (10) years
experience in academic or professional work. The external guide has to be a
person not part of the APIED faculty team (someone outside APIED campus).
2.2(b) With prior permission of the Dissertation Committee, a qualified person from any
other discipline related to architecture may be chosen as an expert or advisor if
the topic of the Dissertation requires.
2.3 The Internal and External guide should endorse the work at the time of
completion. In case of revision / editions required by the Dissertation committee
or the Internal Examiner, both the Guides would be expected to authorize the
same after discussion with the students.
2.4 Students will be required to maintain a log book which has to be signed by
Internal & External guide at every discussion and stamped & signed by the
coordinator before every review.
3.3 The marks will be displayed within two working days after the review.
3.4 Refer schedule of Dissertation below for further clarification & distribution of
marks in various reviews.
PART – II
1. STUDY PROGRAMME:
1.1 Topic of Dissertation: The Topic selected by the student must be derived from
the field of Architecture or related areas like Housing, Urban Design, Planning,
Landscape Design, Interior Design etc.
1.2 Contents of Proposal: In Dissertation, the Proposal must include Name of
Project, Background and Design issues related to Project, identified Case-studies
and Site, basic list of requirements and Design objectives. (refer Annexure I)
1.3 Format: The proposal should be submitted in three (3) hard copies, typewritten on
A-4 size high quality paper with the Topic, Name and Roll No. of the student and
Name of the Guide clearly indicated on the front cover. The date of submission
should also be mentioned and the proposal should be accompanied by the
prescribed Acceptance Letter (Annexure 1) duly completed by the (Internal &
External) Guide and the student.
1.4 Change of Topic: Any substantive change in the Topic of Dissertation after the
final proposal has been submitted shall require prior permission of the
Dissertation Committee. In such case a fresh proposal shall be submitted as per
Part -II (1.1). Minor changes in the wording of the title or scope of work which
may be required in the final stages will not come under this rule.
1.5 Plagiarism: It is a severe punishable offense. Anyone found doing Plagiarism, in
that case action will be taken according to the University norms.
2 STAGES OF DISSERTATION:
2.1.1 Task in Stage – I: During this period the student is expected to complete the
following, as applicable to their subject.
Detailed review of relevant literature
Collection of data/undertaking case studies
Delineation of framework / parameters for analysis of data/case studies
2.1.2 Review – I & II: The work carried out in Stage – I must be presented to the
Dissertation / Internal Review Committee and External Juror. The reviews will
be conducted as per the given schedule. This stage will include formulation of
design program leading to concept.
2.1.3 Review panel will consist of Internal Guide which will change each review.
2.2.1 Review III (Concept & Design Development): The students will commence
working on the draft report. Design development and resolution of details for the
dissertation leading to conclusion of the study.
2.2.2 Pre-Final: The work done in Stage-I & Review - III and the conclusions must be
presented to the Dissertation/Internal review committee and External jurors. The
completed mock-up of the final report must be submitted as per the given schedule
for review by the Internal Assessors. All underlays should be ready at this stage.

SCHEDULE OF DISSERTATION PROGRAMME :
4.1 The Dissertation Semester shall be conducted as per the Programme announced.
4.2 All the students are supposed to remain present for all the reviews. Reviews will
not be re-conducted. It is student’s responsibility to report on time as per the
sequence and time given by the Coordinator.
4.3 Students who do not complete their work by the date of final submission, i.e. as per
Schedule, shall register again with full semester fees and the complete work by
October /November 2016 University Examination.
4.4 Kindly refer table showing stage wise detailed requirement for each review.
5 FINAL REVIEW:
5.1 The Final Review will be held and Final Assessment will be done only if the
Dissertation is satisfactorily completed and presented in the prescribed format and
cleared by Guide and Dissertation Committee.
5.2 The Final review will be examined by the External examiners, External Guide
(approved by the University) & members from Dissertation Committee.
5.3 The student should report one day prior to the date of Final Review. In case of
absence at Review for any reason whatsoever, the student shall be declared absent.
5.4 The work done shall be presented to the reviewing Panel in person, using drawings,
models, visuals etc. to enhance presentation.
5.5 In case of failing in the Final Review, the student will be declared failed in the 10 th
semester.
5.6 APIED reserves the right of first publication of any Dissertation done within the
academic program of the School.
5.7 In case the dissertation is copied / plagiarism than the submission will be
considered invalid.

B. Font: Any Simple & Legible Font will be accepted e.g. Times New Roman/Arial
/Georgia/Bookman Old Style/etc. (fonts will have to be approved by respective internal guide or
external guide)
C. Cover Page: Students can design their own cover page which has to be Hard Bound Cover
D. Drawing Size: A4/A3/A2 size sheets max. drawings should be legible (Any Good Quality Paper)
E. Soft Copy (CD): 2 Soft copies of your entire dissertation book should be submitted along with the
hard copy of the reports. CD should be labeled with following information.
