DIGNITY AMIDST ADVERSITY: EVACUATION MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS

FOR LGUS AND NGOS LAUNCHED

With its location in the typhoon belt and the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is no stranger
to natural calamities. The International Day for Disaster Reduction, held every year on October
13, highlights that disaster preparedness can reduce the negative impact of such calamities.

In line with this advocacy, DAYANAN International Business Consultancy Services announces
the launch of DisasterKit, its new line of evacuation management products. These are geared
for use by local government units (LGUs), corporate foundations, and emergency response
teams.

"Adversity can bring out the worst in people, but it need not be so," said DAYANAN president
Jake Gacus. "We have seen during Typhoon Ompong that evacuation centers could be orderly
and peaceful if people are treated with dignity. Through DisasterKit, we aim to make dignified
solutions for basic needs like shelter and hygiene mainstream."

Gender-Sensitive Shelter

Disasters hit those who are poor hard. But women and children are hit even harder. They
become vulnerable to violence and abuse as order breaks down in the wake of a disaster.
This is what DAYANAN’s gender-sensitive Family Shelter Tent (FST) aims to address. A
modular tent that can accommodate up to six people, it can be set up in less than a minute.
The FST provides women and children with privacy, while helping evacuation center managers
monitor conditions better. A few cities in Metro Manila have already used similar tents in gyms
and basketball courts during Ompong.

Each tent comes with essential non-food items such as blankets, mats, hygiene kits, and
eating utensils. LGUs can also choose to avail of specialized changing tents for men and
women.

Water for All

Outbreaks of infectious diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever are common after
disasters, given the contamination of water sources and poor sanitation facilities. Women,
especially those who are pregnant or nursing, and children are disproportionately affected. In
cramped spaces like evacuation centers, this can be dangerous as well as costly to treat.

H20 Clean, a portable water purification device that can filter up to 300 liters in an hour, aims
to prevent such epidemics. Distributed in the Philippines by DAYANAN, it produces ready-to-
drink water without the use of electricity and chemicals. Currently being used in 40 countries
worldwide, H2O Clean removes 99 percent of known bacteria and viruses.

Critical Adoption

Last October 1, the House of Representatives approved a bill creating the Department of
Disaster Resilience to facilitate better emergency response efforts. Under this bill, non-
government actors, especially businesses, will be engaged further to lessen the impact of
calamities on affected areas.

For Gacus, this, together with the recent earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia, has made
disaster preparedness seem a more critical issue for various sectors.

"We are hopeful that the bill can lead to strengthened collaborations between the government
and the private sector. With their resources, businesses are well-positioned to assist
communities in their time of need. Corporate social responsibility demands no less of us."

A total of 1,550 FST units have already been pre-sold and are now being used in the cities of
Manila and Makati. DAYANAN is looking to partner with more LGUs and corporate foundations
before 2018 ends.

"Calamities do happen, but we Filipinos can shape the way we prepare and respond for them,"
Gacus ended.
