I- Rationale

In producing learners who are competitive in the present society, quality learning

should be ensured among them. However, during the process of learning, several

factors affect the academic performance of the students such as their learning ability

and their lack of interest in the study which challenge educators to provide solutions.

And one of the solutions being practiced in classrooms situations is the use of strategic

intervention strategies or activities which are proven effective to aid the problems on the

academic performance of the students. Several studies (Garcia and Al –Safadi, 2014;

Käll and Nilsson, 2014) stated that intervention programs are needed to improve

students’ academic performance.

In the context, Grade 9 students in Maglambing Integrated School were

experiencing low performance rating in Science. During the first quarter of the year, the

performance rating of the students were taken and identified thirteen (13) male students

and five (5) female students, a total of eighteen (18) students who has an average rate

of 75 -79%. Given that these students passed the subject is good, but the fact that their

grades does not reached the quality education standards that the department

envisioned, it becomes a problem of the teacher, thus, deemed to find a possible

solution to achieve the quality education that the department requires.

As observed, these students lack interest and commit absences in the subject

resulting to a low achievement rating in the Science subject.

The researcher believed that the low performance rating of the students in

Science 9 have something to do with the learning situation of the learners. The
researcher feels further that through the implementation of “Buddy –Buddy System viz

Rewards System,” program, wherein the identified learners will be paired with the high

achiever students, their performance rating in Science 9 will be improved.

II- Research Questions

Specifically, the researcher aims to answer the following;

1. What is the Performance Rating of the identified Grade 9 students in Science for

the First Quarter?

2. What are the reasons affecting the low performance rating of the identified Grade

9 students in Science?

3. What is the Performance Rating of the identified Grade 9 students in Science

after the implementation of “Buddy –Buddy System viz Rewards System,”

program?

III - Proposed Intervention

The students’ performance rating will be improved through the implementation of

“Buddy –Buddy System viz Rewards System,” program. In this intervention, the

identified respondents will be paired with the high achiever students who will give

assistance in every activity that the subject requires. The schedule of activities such as

quizzes and oral recitations will be announced prior to the actual day of performance for

the preparations and peer mentoring of the buddies. Scores achieved during the

formative assessment will be recorded for the testing of the effectiveness of the
program. As a motivation for the high achiever students to improve their assistance

level with the respondents, a reward of one point will be added to their average rating in

the subject during the current quarter, this will only happen in the event that the

performance rating of their buddy had increased by at least two (2) points from the

previous performance rating.

The mentioned intervention will start its implementation during the second

quarter of the school year, school year 2018 -2019.

IV –Methodology

a. Participants/Sampling

In choosing the recipients of the program, the researcher used a purposive

sampling method wherein the students having 75 -79% average performance rating for

the first quarter were picked. In this research, the recipients of the program are the

Eighteen (18) Grade 9 students in Maglambing Integrated School.

b. Data Collection

In this study, the researcher will use a descriptive method in analyzing results.

Different methods will be employed in gathering the data. The first method will be

through the use of the students’ performance rating for the first quarter to determine the

average performance rating of the students in Science 9. Second method will be

through an interview made with the identified Grade 9 students to determine the
reasons affecting the low performance rating in Science 9. And third method will be

through a comparative analysis of the performance rating of the students before and

after the implementation of the program to determine the effectivity of the used

intervention program in aiding the problem on the performance rating of the students.

c. Data Analysis Plan

In this study, the researcher will use a descriptive analysis in analyzing the

results of the data gathered. Graphical and tabular presentations will be utilized for the

presentation of the results.
