CULTURAL INSIGHT
S PANI S HPOD101.COM BEGI NNER #2 - WHERE ARE YOU FROM? 5
Throughout the entire Pacific coast of South America, the landscape is dominated by the
Andes Mountains. Central to southern Peru and the entire Chilean coast are prime examples
of this, where the towering Andes rise up to nearly 24,000 feet, in places not more than 30
miles away from the coast. This makes for an extremely diverse climate. In a country, like
Peru, the Pacific coast is a desert; moving east (and gaining altitude) there is a highland
plateau; then the high peaks region; crossing the Andes (and losing altitude) there is the lush
eastern foothills; and finally the Amazon river basin. Impacting the numerous Latin American
cultures in terms of their agriculture, economy, infrastructure, religion and transportation, the
Andes Mountains are the major geographical feature of the continent.
