CHAPTER I

The Problem

Advantages and Disadvantages of Selfie in Teenagers

Introduction

Selfie is the most trending thing right now all around the globe, from toddlers

to the young to the old, without which a single day does not go by. It is the latest

trend in teenagers, hundreds of people are risking lives to take a selfie which will

fetch them more likes. A selfie is a self-portrait photograph taken with a digital

camera or a phone camera that is hand held and kept for self-collections or uploading

on social networking sites like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Selfies are typically taken either with a camera held at arm’s length or in a

mirror, and typically include either only the photographer or the photographer and

as many people as can be in focus. Selfies taken that involve multiple people are

known as “group selfies” or “ussies”.

Selfie are considered as a beautiful form of self-expression that allows people

to share emotions such as joy and despair. It can boost a person’s confidence and

raise the self-esteem if done in the right way. People feel socially integrated and

have a lot of friends. Using the smartphone camera, it helps in a way that makes

someone feel better and connect with other people instead of personally isolating.
2

The introduction of front camera in smart phone with high mega pixels

provokes the person to take selfie as a proclamation of own importance. Selfies

demonstrate the invasion of technology into private space. Selfies allow the people

to express themselves in a way that never seen before. People who are least

expressive and have shy nature can spread wings through selfies by uploading it on

internet and become social virtually.

Social Media has been responsible for making selfie popular especially

among teenagers. Since famous celebrities and other TV personalities have social

media accounts, other teenagers tend to see how celebrities strike a pose and get a

million of likes. Sometimes selfie meant to attract other users to gain friends and

followers.

The best part about selfie is that people who are willing to take selfie doesn’t

need to be a professional photographer to get the selfies clicked. Both, professional

and non-professional photographer can take it. The selfie taking devices are

immensely easy to use and perform. Another thing is selfies can also be edited with

photography application like Camera 360 that allows the user control and digitally

enhance the photo. The amount of joy and happiness in group meetings and

hangouts increases suddenly at the selfie moments.

On one side while a selfie can have positive psychological effects, it can have

some negative ones too. Taking a lot of selfies per day have some psychological

issues like having an exaggerated interest in self-admiration of physical appearance.

3

The one who post selfies everyday on social networking sites have an issue of being

praised by others. The addiction of selfies grows over time and there is typically no

stopping to it.

The problem with selfie is that users cultivate so much of time, effort and

even money to maintain pleasing and attractive online image. It has a big impact on

both the society and the economy. The economy might rise due to this but the society

will have a radical change. Selfie can make a huge change.

It may possibly develop self-esteem and confidence through likes and

positive comments. Selfies are good as long as it is done with moderation. Taking

selfies provoke to show off and can lead to bad mental state. People exceptionally

admire their looks and physical appearance and expects the same from others

leading to narcissistic tendencies.

The most drastic effect of selfies is that it is spreading like a viral disease

with no treatment. People, mostly teenagers attempt to take selfies at the most

dangerous place in order to become more popular and to build more followers but a

small mistake can ruin a life leading to death.

Many things to unravel behind every selfie that people took. It is imperative

to know these things since it affects everyone. Physically and psychologically,

there is a need for people to know the effects and the reasons why everybody are

all into taking selfie.

4

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the Advantages and Disadvantages of Selfie in

Teenagers, which affect the life of the youth in their daily lives.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following:

1. What is selfie?

2. What are the advantages of taking selfies?

3. What are the disadvantages of taking selfies?

4. Why are selfies taken?

5. Why do people usually upload their picture on social media?

6. What are the common social media apps use in sharing selfies?

7. How does selfie affects the mind of teenagers?

8. Why is it not necessary to post too much selfie on social media?

9. What are the reasons why selfies gain social acceptance?

10. Why is it necessary to use filters when taking a selfie?

5

Scope and Limitation

This study focused on teenagers who take selfies and have the habits of

uploading it on social media and the effect of it on their daily lives.

In addition, it include the advantages and disadvantages the teenagers can

gain from selfie.

Moreover, the researchers seek to understand the factors that affect the

teenagers, and how selfie lead to addiction. Somehow, the researcher think on what

are the ways to prevent selfie addiction.

However, this study will not cover the type of gadget used to take pictures

and it does not also cover how many photos should be upload to social media or to

whom should be share.

Significance of the Study

The research focused on the advantages and disadvantages of selfie in

teenagers.

This will benefit the students to be aware of how far their selfie should go

wise being use in social media.

This study also benefited the social media lovers to learn to care being

responsive in uploading selfie just to gain attention and social approval.

Parents maybe benefited as well by being aware of how their children project

thru selfie in social media such as Facebook. This could help every parent guide

their children as to what is appropriate and what should be the limit of their selfie.
6

To the present researcher this study will contribute by gaining knowledge on

the advantages and disadvantages of selfie in teenagers and by sharing information

with those people who are not aware of selfie.

Future researchers could also gain benefit by learning more about selfie as

well as the advantages and disadvantages that can gain through taking selfie.

CHAPTER II

Review of Literature

Conceptual Literature

Selfie. A selfie is a self-portrait type image, typically taken with a

smartphone which may be held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick. Selfies are

often share on social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and

Instagram. A selfie, however, may include multiple subjects. As long as one of the

subjects featured is taking the photo, it is consider as selfie.

According to Jenna Wortham (2013), selfies are a new form of

communication. In that sense, people can cultivate personal empowerment and

social dialogue —it is not just a self-portrait, but also an invitation for a larger

conversation. People do not post pictures merely for others to observe, but to engage

with friends and social media followers.

According to the researchers, Selfie is an act of taking pictures using the front

camera of a mobile phone or a webcam. It is already part of people’s daily lives.

Selfies can be fun and give people a burst of satisfaction in the moment.

Self-esteem. Reflects an individual's overall subjective emotional evaluation

of their own worth. It is the decision made by an individual as an attitude towards

the self. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself, as well as emotional states,

such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame.

8

According to Abraham Maslow, The need for self-esteem plays an important

role. It depicts self-esteem as one of the basic human motivations. Maslow

suggested that people need both esteem from other people as well as inner self-

respect. Both of these needs must be fulfilled in order for an individual to grow as a

person and achieve self-actualization.

According to the researchers, Self-esteem has a lot of similarity with self-

confidence. It is a feeling of satisfaction that someone has own abilities. Taking

selfie may boost someone’s self-esteem but with moderation. Selfie may also

damage self-esteem.

Social media. Is computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of

ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and

communities. By design, social media is internet-based and gives users quick

electronic communication of content. Content includes personal information,

documents, videos, and photos. Users engage with social media via computer, tablet

or smartphone via web-based software or web application, often utilizing it for

messaging.

According to Routledge (2013), by offering different aspects of self through

images to be shared with others, people’s sharing more of oneself pictures as it

become more authentic and transparent, the digital connectivity encourages. By

uploading selfies via social media networks, one is able to disclose connection to

others.
9

For the researchers, nowadays, using social media is already part of daily

lives. Social media allows someone to be monitor or get updated on what is

happening with the others. It is a big help for communication. Social media was also

use for self-expression by uploading selfies. Too much uploading of selfies may

invade someone’s privacy.

Synthesis

The researchers gathered some information about the advantages and

disadvantages of selfie. What are the reasons why selfie is trending nowadays and

how selfie affects the mind of teenagers in its daily lives? In addition, the researchers

compare and contrast some of the study related from selfie.

According to The Economist (2014), Despite “selfie” becoming a

phenomenon of the 21st century, the act of sharing a selfie with friends pre-dates

the Internet. The act of distributing “cartes de visite,” or pocket sized photo cards,

dates back to the 1860s.

In compare, According to Dr. Michael Pritchard (2013), Selfies aren’t new

in spite of the recent surge. It has quite a long history. As far back as Ancient Egypt,

people of wealth and power have commissioned self-portraits for the purpose of

glorification., historian and director general of the Royal Photographic Society, the

first selfie was thought to have been taken by the end of the 1880s, as the first shutter

with self-timer was available at that time.

10

According to Bustard (2014), when a selfie receives many “likes” or positive

comments on social media platforms, a sense of achievement and success emerges,

which will empower the person in the selfie by shaping his or her real life

understanding of self-identity in terms of others' idealistic perception and wide

acknowledgment.

In contrast with Langlois (2013), Selfies place too much emphasis on the

physical appearance of teenagers, rather than focusing on personalities. Likes and

comments that build self-esteem can crush it as well. After all, if two photos are

posted – the first with nine likes and the second with two likes, some people could

perceive this as feeling less valued.

According to Toma (2013), There is also evidence to support the impact of

sharing oneself to any social media causes more harm to women's confidence, which

assumes that users have a 'healthy' perception of their appearances initially.

However, that is quickly deflated by any negative criticisms posted to their uploaded

pictures.

In difference, Arnett (2000), Considers young age appropriate because it

marks the developmental period of emerging adulthood in which individuals engage

in their most extensive identity exploration in relation to issues concerning

appearance and body weight that may also cause harm. Hence, this developmental

period is true for both men and women.

11

According to Carpenter (2012), Social networking sites, such as Facebook

and Twitter, offer an easy way to participate in the attention-seeking, self-important

behaviors of narcissists. It is important for narcissists to share their experiences

because narcissist believe all of their followers and social networking friends are

genuinely interested in knowing their daily routine.

In compare with Conspiracy club (2015), Going deeper into the behavior in

social networking sites, inappropriate use of the social media can also lead to

harmful effects. Some psychiatrists and mental health workers actually link “selfie”

to mental health conditions related to narcissism and a person’s obsession with their

looks. There was even a British male teenager who tried to commit suicide after he

was unable to take what he felt was the perfect selfie.

Moreover, According to Hughes (2015) and Ms. Sandoval, When selfies

done without care or caution it can lead to physical harm. Selfies have been blame

for harm to others, such as accidents caused by a preoccupation with the camera

over one’s surroundings.

According to Tiidenberg (2014), it is relatively easy to imagine how someone

might feel a sense of psychological and social wellbeing after posting images of a

less-than-perfect body for others to view, and getting positive reinforcement for that

act.
12

In compare, based on the study of Cooley (2014), Selfie is a manner of how

individuals portray selves to other people. Taking photos of one self along the way

is a great way to monitor one’s goals. It helps to increase one’s social status and

makes a particular person feel good about himself and at the same time gives an

opportunity to appreciate own self.
