Subject: Instructions for Week 11

Dear all,

I trust this will find you well. First of all, I would like to congratulate you on the suggestions you provided in the
discussion forum of unit 16. Your contributions were relevant and coherent, well done! Please spare a few
minutes to go back and read my comments on your suggestions.

In order to provide you with some extra reading on the different kinds of practice activity, I suggest you access
http://digital.maven.com.br/pub/newroutes/, and have a look at issue #64 (January/2018). There is an very
interesting article called The Praxis of Practice that summarizes the most important characteristics of each
kind of practice activity, and I believe you would enjoy it.

About your assignment 1, I believe you have all received your assignment 1 by now. In case you have not
received it, please let me know. In general, the assignments were good, but some of you will have to resubmit
it. The resubmission deadline is 28 May.

In general, tutors asked me to remind you to pay extra careful attention to the instructions provided. Some of
did not follow the instructions I sent by e-mail and did not use the cover sheet attached, using the cover sheet
available on Fronter insteas. You are not to use the one available on Fronter because it is not SEVEN’s
assignment. Always make sure you read the weekly instructions carefully and save the emails you receive to
check later if necessary. We will not be able to accept assignments that do not use SEVEN’s pro-forma as of
assignment 2, so, please ensure you use what was provided. Also, ensure you do not scan the cover page – it
needs to be electronically completed. You do not need to include a scanned signature – typing it is sufficient
for electronic documents.

This week we are going to cover to very important topics, which are speaking and lesson planning.

Unit 17 Speaking
Learning objectives
By the end of the unit you will have:

 identified activities to develop students’ speaking

 explored learners’ needs in developing their speaking skills
 examined the sub–skills and strategies of speaking
 looked at two different approaches to teaching speaking
 analysed possible problems in delivering speaking classes and how to address these.

There is no discussion forum in this unit.

Unit 18 Lesson planning 2

Learning objectives
By the end of the unit you will have:

 reviewed the key elements of writing a lesson plan

 reviewed and extended approaches to planning a lesson which develops students’ language
skills, both receptive and productive
 reviewed and extended approaches to planning a lesson which focuses on language systems.

There is one discussion forum in this unit, which is to be done in pairs. Choose a lesson from a course book,
identify the basic approach taken (e.g. test-teach-test), and then suggest ways in which the lesson might be
adapted to suit a class. You do not need to provide a lesson plan – just briefly explain in a paragraph how you
would adapt the material.
The pairs remain the same this week.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Henrique
