1.1 Hydraulic Gates
Development and construction of hydraulic gates is closely related with the development
of irrigation, water supply and river navigation system.
1.2 Classification of Hydraulic gates:
Hydraulic gates can be classified into many types depending on their specific need and
intended purpose in hydropower plants and barrages. Types of gates are as follows:
1) Roller type
2) Hinged type
3) Slide type
Gates mentioned above generally consist of gate leaves, bearings, gate hoist, gate guides
and anchorage. The gate leaf consists of part directly subjected to hydraulic pressure and
a part to transmit the load acting on the leaf to the anchorage. The gate guide is a part
placed in concrete, where a watertight portion of the hydraulic gate touches the water
sealing material. Anchorage is a part to transmit load from the bearing of the leaf to the
concrete.
Gates from 3 sided watertight can be classified as
Small sized gate Less than 10 m2
Medium sized gate Less than 50 m2
Larged sized gate More than 50 m2

1.2.1 Hydraulic Gates in Hydropower

Types and shapes of hydraulic gates can be classified in terms of installation place,
purpose and conditions of use as follows
1) Gates for dams and power generation
a) Spillway gates
b) Conduit gates
c) Gates for Intakes

d) Tailrace Gates
e) Sediment flush gate
f) Gates for repair
2) Gates for intake weirs and estuary weir
a) Spillway gates
b) Discharge sediment gate
c) Regulating gate
d) Intake gate, headrace gate and silt basin gate
e) Fishway gate
f) Navigation lock gate
1.2.2 Large Spillway Radial Gates
Radial gates comes under hinged type gates and in dam’s spillway radial play a vital role
as they are installed at the over flow portion of a dam and are in full time use, inspections
and repairs are restricted, thus requiring attention to their structural reliability and
operation. Failure of hydraulic steel structures appurtenant to the dam could be lead to
loss of reservoir control.
1.3 Approaches:
1.3.1 Design calculation load Approach:
This research deals with two important approaches for solving the problem. The first one
is using normal load calculation approach, which includes self-weight of hydraulic steel
structures, hydraulic static load and inertia force.

1.3.2 Experimental Approach:

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) approach. This approach deals with breaking the model
into smaller components and finding out the stresses and changes in mechanical
properties like stiffness, material degradation. ANSYS 14.5 software is used to determine
the finite element model of the structure and validate the results calculated through static
calculations.

1. Topic of Research:
Modeling & Simulation of Large Radial Gates and their Analytical Validation

2. The Research Problem:

Hydraulic gates with area more than 50 m2 comes under large sized gate. Structural
design of large gates is very important especially in dam spillway as is classified as
critical structure. Failure may result in uncontrolled releases of water from the reservoir,
and /or generate unacceptable downstream hazard.
3. Literature Review
The relevant literature review regarding the design of large radial gates structural
signatures is presented below.
Paulo Cf Erbitsi et al. [7] has practically calculated the design of radial gates in general thus
defining the arms selection. No information if given related to the number of arms selection for
large gates and its limitations.

5 Methodology:

Static calculations of mechanical structure will be done then mechanical structure is to be

designed in finite element software for validation of results. The structure is discretized
into smaller blocks to obtain a meshed finite element model.
