Lesson: The weather – teaching vocabulary
Textbook: Fairyland 2b, Express Publishing
Time: 35 min

SPECIFIC COMPETENCES
- to review and improve the Ss’ vocabulary range;
- to introduce and practice new words to describe weather
- to encourage pupils to communicate freely and spontaneously during the activities;
- to develop pupils’ speaking and writing competences.
AIMS
By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to:
- identify and name all the seasons
- identify different types of weather conditions;
- describe weather;
- practice vocabulary related to the topic in sentences of their own

TEACHING TECHNIQUES
- Brainstorming, explanation, conversation, exercises, song, dialogue
SKILLS: reading, writing, speaking, listening

MATERIALS: whiteboard, flashcards, laptop, video projector, pupil’s book, digital book,
markers

Warm Up
Aim:
-to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere
Procedure: -T greets pupils by saying Hello! and pupils answer back.
Timing:2 min
Interaction: T-S, frontal

Activity 1: Lead-in
Aim:-
to recycle and practice the vocabulary previously taught (the four seasons)
Procedure: T writes the word year on the board. T asks the pupils to name the four seasons. T
writes the seasons on the board with different colours: spring- green, summer – red, autumn –
yellow, winter – white.
T plays a song and asks the pupils to recognize the seasons in each picture from the video.
T announces the title of the lesson

Timing: 6 min.
Activity 2: Presentation & Practice
Aim:
-to present and activate the vocabulary of the lesson
-to develop and practice pupils’ listening, speaking skills
-to give pupils confidence in their ability to use English.
Procedure: T pins up the weather condition flashcards on the board. T points to the weather
conditions: It’s hot. It’s cold. It’s sunny. It’s raining. It’s snowing., one at a time, and presents
them. Pupils repeat after the T. then T points to the weather conditions in random order. Pupils
repeat after the T. T writes the weather conditions on the blackboard and pupils write the
weather conditions in their notebooks.
T asks pupils to open their books at page 26. T writes the number on the board and holds up her
book. T says the instruction twice as she mimes them. T plays the recording. Pupils listen, point
and repeat.

Activity 3: Practice
Aim: - to identify different types of weather conditions
- to practice vocabulary related to the topic
Procedure: T says the instruction twice as she mimes them.
T: What’s the weather like today? Can you say?
Pupils repeat after T. Then T points to the first picture and says:
T: It’s snowing today!
Pupils repeat after T. T repeats with the rest of the pictures. T explains the activity and plays the
recording. Pupils listen to the song and point to the mentioned weather conditions. T plays the
recording again. Pupils listen and sing along, joining in with the actions.
T tells pupils to read the sentences. Pupils have to look at the pictures in ex 1. T explains the
activity. Pupils have to match the sentences according to what they see in each picture. Then T
invites pupils to say what the weather is like as well as the number of the picture and writes them
on the board helping them if necessary.

Activity 4: Production
Aim: - practice vocabulary related to the topic in sentences of their own
- to practice writing skills
Procedure: T asks pupils to write in their notebook their favourite season and What is the
weather like?. After writing the sentences pupils have to read them to the rest of the class.
Eg. My favourite season is spring because it is sunny.
Timing: 10 min

Activity 5: Evaluation
T grades most active pupils
Timing: 3 min
Interaction: T-S
Homework assignment: 1 min . Pupils have to draw their favourite season.
