PREFACE
This standard was prepared by the Association's Committee on Concrete
Pipes as a revision of AS A35-1957, which it accordingly supersedes.
In accordance with the decision of the Australian Government to change
to the metric system, all dimensions and values in this standard are in
international system (SI) units.

In converting from imperial unit values to metric unit values the

committee decided on a 'soft' conversion, but some rationalization of the
range of internal diameters has been effected. Capital investment in manu-
facturing machinery governing the length and diameter of pipe will
preclude any desirable rationalization of sizes on the basis of a hard

conversion of these dimensions for some time. The committee envisages,

for example, that the standard dimensions for diameter might eventually
be in multiples of 50 mm for smaller sizes, 100 mm for medium sizes, and
200 mm for larger sizes.
Some similar rationalization may be considered for length. The
committee recognizes that further modification of this standard will be
necessary to obtain desirable rationalization in relation to other standards
and the committee will continue to work towards this end.
The opportunity was taken to bring the format of the standard up to
date, and the most significant change in the technical requirements was
inclusion of a series of test-crack measuring gauge widths to cater for
specific ranges of reinforcement cover thickness. All specified tests may
not be applicable to all types of special pipe.
Details of flexible joints are not laid down because the comn1ittee
considered that the manufacturer should be allowed freedom of ingenuity
in the design and development of these details. The standard provides,
however, for the purchaser to approve the design of the flexible joint
which the manufacturer proposes to supply.
Some purchasers require evidence from manufacturers that their
product complies with the provisions of this standard. The 'AS' certifica-
tion trademark of the Standards Association (see Clause 2.6, Marking)
on a precast concrete drainage pipe is an independent assurance of such
compliance. Attention is drawn to the fact that the Standards Association
intends to extend the (AS' certification mark scheme to embrace this
standard with effect fr01n 1 January 1974; meanwhile the scheme will
continue to apply to pipes complying with AS A35 until 30 June 1974.

Recommendations concerning pipelaying practice are not included

and in this regard attention is drawn to AS CA33, Concrete Pipe Laying
Design. ·
