Greetings of Peace!
It has been twelve years ago when the College of Engineering – Polytechnic
University of the Philippines pioneered the search for the most outstanding
research of the year known as the Annual Research Awards (ARAW).
The ARAW’s main purpose is to give due recognition to laudable researches of

engineering students around the country, that is inspired to advance the welfare
of the Filipino people, especially the poor.
With the unwavering support from the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST), the endorsement from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and
the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) and a
strong commitment to champion a sound and competent research culture, the
Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ College of Engineering remains
committed and gives utmost importance to this yearly endeavor.
Last year’s ARAW revolved with the theme “Pagpapayabong ng Agham at

Teknolohiya para sa Sambayanan”. With the overwhelming response of
research enthusiasts from universities, we felt accountable for accepting the task
of setting a vibrant venue to showcase once again worthy intellectual
explorations in science and technology.
The theme for ARAW 2020 is “Facing the Challenges of Industry 4.0 through
Science and Technology”. The 13th ARAW recognizes the utmost importance
of continuous commitment to research and innovation, and the vital role of
science and technology community in taking advantage of the opportunities the
research and innovation can offer that will lead to the country’s development.
The event will give due recognition to the importance of scaling up the technology
to permit economic structural transformation and the implementation of
engineering strategies that will draw the framework for the national development.
In line with this, we would like to invite your respectable institution to join
the quest for the most outstanding research of the year tagged as, “The
13th Annual Research Awards (ARAW 2020)” which will be held on March
10-11, 2020 at Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning
Resource Center, PUP Sta. Mesa, Manila.

OBJECTIVES
The 13th Annual Research Awards (ARAW 2020) is guided with the
following long-term agenda:
1. Strengthen the competence of engineering professionals and students in

research and development for the advancement of science and technology
in the field of engineering.
2. Reinforce the development of an effective mechanism that will serve as a

venue for research and development training, incubation of research and
development output, vehicle for exchange of research and development
data, and delivery of research and development to its target beneficiaries.
3. Build up a globally competitive team of human resource for collaborative

research and development undertaking in the field of engineering.
4. Establish network and linkages of institutions and industries from

different sectors of the society gearing towards engineering research and
development agenda.
ACTIVITIES
The 13th Annual Research Awards will be a two-day event.
March 10 and 11, 2020, is slated for The Young Engineering

Inventors/Innovators Forum and Exhibit. The exhibit will feature the
prototypes of the 13th Annual Research Awards finalists. It will serve as a venue
for the finalists to further promote their respective researches. It is also a way of
the organizing committee to promote a sound and competent culture of research.
On March 10, 2020, a conference will be held parallel with the Young
Engineering Inventors Exhibit. While on March 11, 2020, the finalists’
respective researches will be presented to a panel of judges. The panel of judges
is composed of engineers, scientists, and technology experts from the
Department of Science and Technology, academe and industry.
The awarding ceremony of the 13th ARAW will be held in the afternoon
after the judges’ deliberation. The awards that will be given that day are Best
Research for Commercialization Award, Best Innovative Research Award,
and Best Scientific Research Award. All the finalists will receive cash prizes
and certificates.

METHODOLOGY & ACTIVITY SCHEDULE
The table below shows the different activities and its corresponding date
the organizers would implement to smoothly carry out the goals and objectives

Annual Research Awards Activities

GENERAL GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA
The search is a nation-wide activity open to all engineering students whose

researches may be categorized in the following fields:
 Basic Engineering Research for Science, Technology, Engineering,

Agriculture, and Mathematics (STEAM)
 Environment, Disaster Risk Reduction and Prevention, Climate
Change and Renewable Energy
 Terrestrial and Marine Economy: Biodiversity and Conservation
 SMART Analytics and Engineering Innovation
 Health System, Medical and Biomedical Electronics
 Food Production and Security
 Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources
 Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology
 Intelligent Transportation Solutions
 Human Resource Utilization, Engineering Management, Ergonomics
and Safety Engineering
 Cloud Computing, Big Data, Augmented Reality, Microelectronics
and Spintronics
 Construction & Design, Structural Review, Analysis &
Reinforcement, Materials Science & Micro-structural Engineering
 Robotics, Mechatronics and Systems Control
The judges will come from the Department of Science and Technology, and
different industries and institutions associated with research and development.
The initial screening of entries will be based from the preliminary documents
submitted by the participants via e-mail (detailed abstract and executive
summary). Cash prizes, plaques, and certificates will be given to the winners,
and certificate of recognition will be given to all the participants. Short-listed
entries will be announced through e-mail, SMS, and the official 13th ARAW
Facebook account (Annual Research Awards).
QUALIFIED PARTICIPANTS
The 13th Annual Research Awards (ARAW 2020) is open to all

engineering students from public and private Higher Education Institutions in
the Philippines except for Polytechnic University of the Philippines and its
branches and campuses. Each Academic Engineering Program can submit a
maximum of 3 research entries in each category (Best Research for
Commercialization, Best Innovative Research, and the Best Scientific
Research).
The Participating Research Teams must abide with the following
requirements:
 The team must indicate the category they will be joining.
 Members must be bona fide students of the school and presently
enrolled.
 The team must be consisting of maximum of six researchers.
 Members may include students from 3rd year to 5th year.

 The team may also be composed of representatives from the various

disciplines of Engineering within their school.
 One (1) Lead Coordinator: He/She shall serve as the point person
of the team, most especially with respect to requirements that will
be submitted online.
 One (1) Student Presenter: He/She shall serve as the representative
of the team during the presentation and panel defense/judging.
 The team must have an official Team Coach/Adviser.
PROCESS OF EVALUATION
The evaluation of entries will pass through the following stages:
 Initial evaluation of entries will be done, based on the submitted detailed

abstract, by a panel of judges to come up with a shortlist of the
semifinalists.
 The semifinalists will be asked to submit the executive summary of their
research to be evaluated by another set of panel of judges to determine the
finalists.
 Finalists are required to exhibit their researches on March 11, 2020.
Finalists who failed to exhibit their prototypes will be disqualified from the
competition.
 Final panel interview and awarding will be on March 11, 2020 at the
Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resource Center,
Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manila.
SUBMISSION OF ENTRY
 A 3 page maximum detailed abstract of each research entry shall be

directly submitted to the official email address of the 13th ARAW :
arawpup@gmail.com
 Enough details are expected so as to enlighten the judges about the novelty
of the concept and the possible positive societal impact of the research
entry.
 Each entry must be submitted separately.
 The subject of the e-mail must contain the name of the school, and the
title of the research.
 The name of the school and researcher/s must not be reflected on the
submitted detailed abstract.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
 Semifinalists are required to submit the Executive Summary of their

research.
 Each entry must be separately submitted.
 The subject of the e-mail must contain the name of the school, and the
title of the research.
 The Executive Summary of the research entries must be composed of:
i. Title and Abstract
ii. Introduction
iii. Method/s
iv. Results and Discussion
v. Conclusion
vi. References
vii. Appendices
viii. Author/s Note
 The name of the school and the name of the researcher/s must not be
reflected on the Executive Summary of the research.
FINAL PRESENTATION
 The final presentation of the finalists is a 15-minute Powerpoint

presentation of the research which should include but not limited to the
following:
i. Brief introduction
ii. Purpose of the study
iii. Significance of the study (Target Beneficiary)
iv. Actual footage of working research prototype/ testing
v. Results and Discussion
vi. Conclusion and Recommendations

The 13th Annual Research Awards will give the following prizes
 Best Scientific Research Award (Plaque + Medal + Certificate + Cash

Prize)
2 Consolation Prizes for Scientific Research Category
 Best Research for Commercialization Award (Plaque + Medal +

Certificate + Cash Prize)
2 Consolation Prizes for the Category Research for Commercialization
 Best Innovative Research Award (Plaque + Medal + Certificate + Cash
