BRIEF HISTORY OF

HYPNOSIS
• IN the 1700’s, an Austrian doctor, Franz
Anton Mesmer (1735 – 1815) recognized
the ancient healing phenomenon of the
shamans
• Shamans were the ancient trials dealing
in Isotenic sciences, lived in South
America
•He was the 1st person from the
western world who actually studied this
science and gave it this term “Animal
Magnetism”
• In the mid 1800’s, the hypnotic trance
was used to relieve pain.

• Dr. John Elliotson and in India James

Esdailre performed surgical operations
using Hypnosis
•Late 1800’s, James Braid coined
the word “HYPNOSIS”

•The word hypnosis is derived

from the Greek word meaning
‘hypnos’ meaning ‘Nervous Sleep’.
• His study revealed that when people
were taken to this process their senses
became susceptible
• Late 1950’s the popularity of
hypnotherapy started getting diminished.
• As there were people who were unable to
get hypnotized.
• Dr. Kappass in 1980’s actually conducted
the study on how people take in
information.

So, now hypnotherapy is well
accepted by
In 1958,
The American Medical
Association approved a
report on the medical uses
of hypnosis.

Two years after AMA

approval, the American
Psychological Association
endorsed hypnosis as a
branch of psychology.
On April 23, 1955, the
British Medical Association
(BMA) approved the use of
hypnosis in the areas of
psychoneuroses and
hypnoanesthesia in pain
management in childbirth
and surgery.
It also advised all its
physicians and medical
students to receive
fundamental training in
hypnosis.
The Ministry of Health
& Family Welfare,
Government of India,
vide its letter
no.R.14015/25/96-
U&H(R) (Pt.) dated 25
November, 2003, has
very categorically
stated that
hypnotherapy is a
recognized mode of
therapy in India to be
practiced by only
appropriately trained
Personnel.
The validation of hypnotherapy is same as it would take place
in the validation of a theory.
Prior to 2002 under the constitution under the Drug and
remedies act there were simply 5 acceptable alternatives
form of therapies which were
Ayurveda,
Siddha,
Unani,
Homeopathy,
Naturopathy
The list expanded to Acupuncture and hypnotherapy as well
• From the last 50yrs the model it has
followed the results were validated and
replicated.

Man was as
primitive
as an animal
How Does an Animal Live ?
An Animal Lives by Instinct
He eats when he is
hungry,sleeps ,mates when
he wants to
Man too…
did the same
Eating
He ate ,slept,
mated ,urinated
and defecated
when ever
and
where ever
the urge came
He had no guilt
No shame no
embarresment and
no regrets
He had no embarrassment
He had no
sense of morality,
no religious
conditioning
Animals lived on
instincts only for
survival and for this they
had
two basic responses
Fight response and flight
response
What’s the requirement
for fight response ?
Aggresion and strength
What’s the
requirement
for flight response ?
Speed,agility,sight,
smell,hearing
Man too had the
fight and flight
response
Sometimes….
both
together.
Man developed
the
ability to think
What do you think he thought about ?
Survival
And

They started staying together and indoors

Countered their smelling ability

With passage of time,
man started developing……
Rules,
With rules came systems
Rules
With rules came Systems
And the more
rules and systems we followed……
…. The more we inhibited ourselves
………we inhibited our natural
instinctive responses
More the inhibitions……

….more the internalization of emotions

…………More the breakdowns

Man keeps internalizing
conflicts
which his rules do not permit
him to express
Therefore he becomes an
inhibited individual
He keeps suppressing his
Emotions
Anger……cancer
Loveless life…..heart attacks
Holding on to your
emotions leads
to……diabeties
As his thinking ability
developed, man picked
up a third survival
response

The ability to play dead

Modern man therefore
has these three responses
Fight flight and playing
dead (depression)
For our survival we have fight and flight
responses. For us to behave as per the respose
that our mind has chosen we have Autonomic
Nervous System….

1.Sympathetic Nervous System

2.Parasympathetic Nervous
System
When mind is faced with a dangerous
situation, Fight and flight syndrome gets
activated. The moment it gets triggered, the
sympathetic nervous system kicks in and many
psychological changes take place.
For exp: Blood rushes to place where it is
required most i.e. in muscles.
Heart beats faster
etc
 When the requirement is over ,
the parasympathetic nervous
system gets triggered.
 Brings the body back to its
normal behavior i.e the
homeostasis state
Sometimes when
parasympathetic system does
not get triggered , person
goes to a panic state
So in crises ,
like animals we also revert to
fight and flight syndrome and
then we are controlled by our
subconscious mind ,which is a
part of our automotive nervous
system

Every single thing in life
is essentially happening
in the mind
The entire life in fact,
is
a series of experiences which the mind
collects and stores and reacts to - in some
manner

PRIMITIVE MIND :-

 FIGHT IS TO “ TAKE ACTION RESPONSE”

 FLIGHT IS TO “ REACTION OF AVOIDANCE ”

WHEN WE CANNOT DO EITHER, IT BECOMES ‘PLAYING DEAD’

How database are Updated
• Every time a conscious mind sends a
message to the subconscious mind, it is
stored in the same file where the same
message was stored before .
• This way it updates the existing
database
• e.g. chocolate
Our conscious mind is such that as soon as
any information comes in, it has to
process the information

The conscious mind tells the brain how to

react to a situation as per the
information coming in.
• E.g. hand burning
Habits
• These are repetitions of what we
know, and knowing is a
pleasurable experience, So we
repeat it.
• E.g. smoking
So what is hypnosis
Hypnosis is simply the
setting aside of the conscious mind
and
dealing with
the subconscious without touching the
critical mind
We are in hypnosis
whenever
the usual relationship
between the conscious and subconscious mind
is reconfigured
so that the subconscious
plays a more dominant role.
When you are hypnotized

You are not asleep

Your mind can comment, criticize
and censor
You are always in control of what
you say.
One can emerge out of hypnosis
whenever one wants
In Hypnosis
Concentration will be more
focused
The senses are sharper
Every muscle in the body feels
relaxed
Even though a person can move,
there is usually a lack of movement.
Hypnosis is not a truth serum
In hypnosis, the client
controls the process

The therapist is merely a

guide.
• In the normal circumstances the conscious mind holds
information for 1 – ½ hrs and the critical mind for 24
hrs.

• The subconscious mind has the flight / fight response

system, the purpose of the flight/ fight system is to
keep you alive, and so it takes control.

• Subconscious mind is approximately 6000 times more

powerful than the conscious mind.
• Hypnosis is a fight mechanism and the control is with
the subconscious mind.

• Also when one gets into a crisis, one gets into a

hypnotic state. Subconscious mind takes control only
in a situation of crisis for survival.

• Messages coming are stored in the critical conscious

mind, and when it overflows, all information goes
straight into the subconscious mind.

AFTER SOME TIME THE S.C.M TELLS THE C.M ABOUT ALL THE +VE

Demonstration of
hypnosis
Explanations
Finger spreading
Lunch time
Lets practice
finger spreading
1. In hypnosis we are keeping conscious mind awake but giving the control to
the subconscious mind.
2. When we hypnotize a person for the first time- he/she resists in every
possible way . They do not want to lose control.
3. The situation:
a) Standing not comfortable.
b) Hand standing out.
c) Starting at the fingertip.
d) Focussing on the breath.

Pleasure and pain for mind

4) So holding hand in this manner is an unknown, so mind creates a lot of MU’s.
5) Staring also vvcreates a lot of MU’s as staring is unknown to mind.
6) Focus on the breath. This also creates MU’’s.
7) Fingers holding together tightly- Uncomfortable position shows makes it easy
for fingures to go apart when commanded. The mind wonders- what is
happening without me wanting and then it feels it’s loosing control.
8) The hand moving towards the face – as the coonscious mind gets
overloaded.
9) Then when we give the choice whether the hand or the arm is coming
towards the face it gives more MU’s to the mind.
10) ‘Close your eyes, when you want to’…… more processing , more MU’s. When she closes
the eyes, a faculty is taken away, and whenever a faculty is taken away, the mind gets
into loss of control, and other thoughts arise in the mind- hand moving fast/slow,
where is it, etc. It all gives rise to MU’s.
11) Conscious mind has to process all this information. We can even talk nonsense. To
confuse the mind. There is continuous build up of anxiety.
12) When you touch the third eye and say ‘deep sleep’, the body produces tremendous
number of MU’s. (Touching the third eye is very sensitive, moreover the person does
not know who is touching- touch by unknown person- very high anxiety producing
event) At that moment fight mechanism gets triggered i.e conscious mind hands over
control to the subconscious.
13) So the person goes into hypnotic state. We let them relax, since it is a calm and relaxed
space to be in.
14) Now we got them into the hypnotic state, we have to get them out also. So the mind
will accept the suggestion of ‘when I count from 1-5, at 5 you will be wide awake’.

15) This method is used for demo only not with clients.
Demonstration
Arm raising
Let’s raise
the arms
1.When a new client comes to us, for the first
session only use this induction. From the
second and subsequent sessions you can use
different inductions.
2.Throughout the induction the word
‘hypnosis’ is not used.
3.People have invariably heard about hypnosis-
from movies, stage, etc. and so there is fear.
When they come on the chair, there would
be anxiety building up.
4.Also we would have had an interview prior to
bringing them on the chair.
We increase message units by the following-

1)Taking arm and moving to face 3 to 4 times.

2)Put arm on the table.
3)Turning the neck. (uncomfortable posture)
4)Ask him or her not to talk and answer non verbally.
5)Test your suggestibility.
6)Test you can not fail.
7)If you do not understand my question,
look into my eyes and I’ll know the answer
8)Asking the suggestibility questions.
9)Look at the hand and visualise.
Get into the yes set.
Ask the chair to be moved 2 to 3 times.
1.Nod your head when you can visualise.
2.As you focus on your breathing it becomes
deeper and more rythmic.
3.Get more rythmic, nod your head.
4.Eyes closed. You will feel a slight movement
of your eyses under the eye lids.
5.Tendency for the mouth to go dry and you
may want to swallow.
6.You may feel the pressure on the elbow
increase slightly.
7.Arm become lighter and lighter
Mind hands over the control when-

1. We will convert you at the point. ( mind tries to fathom,

convert me into what…mind goes berserk. C.M can not
handle so much info and processing, wants to hand
over control)
2. Touch the third eye and say deep sleep.
1) Third eye is very sensitive. This shock is not expected.
2) Already the clients conscious mind in a state to hand
over control to the subconscious.
3) this action creates shock and the client goes easily in
to a hypnotic state i.e hand over the control fully.
THEORY

OF

SUGGESTIBILITY
Suggestibility can be defined as
how we receive information

It evolves from how we were communicated to,

in our childhood.
Dr. John Kappas
did research why
50% of population
was not
hypnotizable and
came up with the
scale
100 % inferential
0% inferential 50%

0 % literal
100 % literal

Somnambulist
• All people fall on this line
somewhere
• Nobody is at 0 or 100 at either
end
• Earlier all hypnotherapists were
giving very literal suggestions
and so they were not able to
hypnotize all.
0 % Physical 100 % Physical

100 % Emotional 0 % Emotional

Dr. Kappas Recategorised
Suggestibility
&
Gave Suggestibility
Questionnaire.
*Divided subjects based on
suggestibility as Physical and
Emotional Suggestible
• A person who is more than 50%
inferential is called emotionally
suggestible.

• A person who is more than 50%

literal is called physical
suggestible.
The 3rd category is of :-
• A person who is [ 50/50 ] i.e.
literal / inferential is called
somnambulist
• He can receive information both
literally and inferentially.
• All “sleepwalkers” are
Somnambulist but the reverse is
not true.
In the past, only physical
suggestible were recognized.
• If we look at ‘how our Mind works’,
we will find that everything that
ever happens starts with a thought

• Nothing happens ever in the world

without a thought.
•Even when we use our finger –
we start with thought image.
• then brain figures out which
muscles to be moved , releases
energy to those muscles, and the
finger moves.
•Mind controls the release of this
energy

• We need to understand these
people as hypnotherapists and then
we can handle them.

• Suggestion must be given at the

client’s level of control.
For Emotional Suggestible
• They know how to control their
emotional feelings
• And if they control their emotions
they do not get the physical
feelings.
For Physical Suggestible
• They know how to control their
physical feelings.

• If they control their physical

feelings, they do not get the
Emotional feelings.
In a similar situation that can give rise to
emotions , an ES will be able to control
his emotions and nobody knows if he is
disturbed, whereas a PS will not be able
to control his emotions and throw
tantrums.

DEVELOPMENT
OF
SUGGETIBILITY
Suggestibility develops depending

upon

how we were communicated

to as a child
What do we mean by

communication ?
Any interpersonal communication is
composed of

1. Verbal content

2. Extra verbal content

3. Context and state of mind of the receiver

The mother is one of the
biggest influence of
suggestibility initially .

To a young child, the

mother is the whole
world.
If the child’s mother uses words of affection (verbal
contact)

Treats him affectionately (non verbal contact)

And

does not suppress his free verbal expression,

the child learns something valuable

“what mother says is what mother means”

this produces physical suggestibility.

Any conflicting inconsistent

behavior of the mother,

will push the child towards

emotional suggestibility.
Example Cleaning room
•From 6 to 9 child is
influenced by
friends,teacher, idols, or
sometimes religious
gurus
From 10 – 14 years of age …
•F a t h e r
When a child is born,

his suggestibility is

Physical
By the age of 14,

the suggestibility is more or less

completely developed
• If there is no father, any secondary male
member of the family can influence the
suggestibility.
• Suggestibility is not genetic.
The key thing to understand here is that
no suggestibility is good or bad. So its not that its great to be a
physical or to be an emotional.

Both are fine,

but you just need to understand what it means. We learn

suggestibility is to learn how to communicate with our clients

.
• Home work
• Pls do your suggestibility test.
