Assignment 10

When beginning a career within education, it is important that aspiring teachers have a

plan of what they would like their classroom to look like. Not in physical aspects but in moral

and behavioral aspects. Every year, teachers will get new students; These students will have a

variety of backgrounds, cultures, values, etc. so it is important that teachers are aware of what

they want their students to learn and act like when they are in their class. Personally, I want my

students to learn to be respectful and how to appropriately express their feelings rather than show

them through verbal or physical aggression. I want my students to learn to truly value honesty

and the rewards that come from that. Below, I will be explaining how I plan to accomplish these

things in my future classroom.

Students tend to express their feelings through actions and reflect what they see their

parents do and/or say. This isn’t always an appropriate way to handle a situation and I would like

to make sure that my students are aware of that. I want to teach them how to have effective

communications to voice what they are feeling with their fellow classmates and other adults. It is

so important for me to make sure that my students feel safe and protected when they are at

school. I never want my students to be afraid to enter my classroom but I want them to feel

prepared to enter the world or move onto the next grade after finishing my class. I will help my

students make needed adjustments by pointing out when they are handling a situation well by

saying things like “Thank you, Sally. I appreciate you explaining to me how you feel and

bringing this to my attention. This was very helpful.” This way, students are encouraged to

continue the behavior and act this way in other situations. The goal is not to change my students

but to help them know how to handle different situations. I want my students to learn and grow

in my class and become their best selves.

In my classroom, rules will be consistent throughout the whole year. I will spend the first

day explaining what I expect from my students so there aren’t any surprises and I will abide by

what I say. I don’t want to make anything too strict so I can still allow for enjoyment in my class,

but I don’t want a lack of rules to be the reason behind complete chaos. To me, the classroom

needs to be a place of learning but if the students aren’t having fun, they won’t learn as much. It

is important to find a balance. Again, I want students to find joy in coming to school and see that

learning can be fun! This can be done through building relationships with my students so they

feel like I am someone they can trust. In my lesson plans, I will incorporate activities and strive

to make everyday new and exciting.

I am well aware that I am going to have students who aren’t going to want to listen to me,

who will try to make a scene in class, who will slack off on their work, who are just going to be

difficult to manage. I don’t feel like punishments are the way to handle these misbehaviors at

first. Depending on the grade that I end up teaching, there are different ways that situations

involving misbehaved students, can be approached. In elementary school, a point system can be

integrated where students earn points for good behavior and lose points for misbehavior. After

the class earns x amount of points, they earn a reward. For middle school and high school

students, they might respond better to earning extra credit points or a movie day for good

behavior. Verbal warnings will be given to students who need it and if nothing changes, things

like detention, principal’s office and calls home will have to be made.

I want my classroom to be a comfortable place to learn where my students feel like they

can be themselves and they feel like I care about them and their success. I hope that the way that

I plan to run my classroom through praising good deeds and kindly correcting misbehaviors, will

help my students feel prepared to enter the world as adults or even just move onto the next grade

level. I never want to make anyone feel inferior or feel like they have been embarrassed. My

students are people who have feelings and can be treated as adults. They are in school to learn

not to be punished.
