The Effects of Bringing Mobile Phones on the Students

A mobile phone is a wireless handheld device that allows users to make and receive calls and send text messages while moving around a wide geographic area [1].
The first public demonstration of a phone call over a cellular network was led by Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone in 1973 [2]. Mobile phones are
noticeably handy because of its small size and it allows you to communicate even while on the move as long as you have battery life. Its main purpose is to keep
people connected, regardless of the distance that separates them[3]. The earliest generation of mobile phones supports limited services that is only available for
calls and text messages. However, today’s mobile phone supports very wide range variety of other services aside from text and calls. It is packed with many
additional features, such as; web browsers, games, cameras, video players and even navigational systems.

A mobile phone may also be known as a cellular phone or simply a cell phone. This device plays an integral part of our daily lives. The number of mobile cellular
subscriptions is constantly increasing every year. In 2016, there were more than seven billion users worldwide [4]. Obviously, this increase was affected by the
increase of usage of the younger generations. Most of the global population especially students uses mobile devices because of its conveniency and wide range of
applications. It is the most dominant and frequently used device when seeking information and as a communication technology.

Every year, different phone manufacturer releases their new model that has new and improved qualities. The specific functions of the mobile phones helps to lessen
the work of the students, but this also impacts them in a negative way as it causes them to be dependent on the device. Too much usage of mobile phone can also
be a distraction as it diverts the attention of the user to other applications available on the device. Overexposure can also lead to several health issues such as:
cancer, changes in brain activity, reaction times, and sleep patterns [5]. It is reported that people who talk on the phone for several hours a day are 50% more likely
to develop brain cancer. The reason for this is the radio waves produced by mobile phones. It is calculated that that every minute the human brain receives about
220 electromagnetic impulses, which are not necessarily harmful, but which definitely affect the brain in cases of prolonged impact. Recent studies report two types
of brain cancer may occur – glioma and acoustic neuroma. Apart from cancer risk, mobile phones influence our nervous system [6].

This study attempts to determine the influence of bringing mobile phones on the students of Immaculate Conception Academy - Science High School's Academic
Performance.
