1. What is the dispute about?

 The Government of Kenya is having problems in responding to revelations that it may impede its
sovereignty with China because of the potential that a multi-billion-dollar contract loan cannot be
paid.
 Kenya’s prized water body, the Port of Mambasa, has been considered by them as a significant
port in terms of economic means. Though it caused public outrage and confusion as there have
been China ships observed “roaming” and controlling the said port.
 The details for the largest country’s largest infrastructure project ever since attaining its
independence in 2014 were revealed when a Kenyan publication excerpts from a 2014 contract
between the Republic of Kenya and the Import-Export bank of China.
 Included in its terms and agreements between the contract, involves forfeiting lands on failure to
pay the due, and the use of Chinese technology, goods, and services on the verge of the process
to name a few.

2. What led to the dispute?


- China and Kenya have a very strong relationship that dates back over 4 decades. During
those times, they had various agreements, projects and etc. that improved their relationship. As
of now, they have political ties, economical ties. However, in 2018, China used their debt-trap
diplomacy to kenya( debt-trap diplomacy is a very famous strategy from the China that makes use
of lending money to countries that are in need to build projects and etc., by lending their money
to such countries that can’t easily return the money, they can utilize the resources from the
country that they lend the money to). China lent money to Kenya for their project to build a
transportation system. After this agreement, a public outcry happened over the unregulated
importation of fish from the China to the market of Kenya which resulted to the banning of
Chinese fish imports from the president of Kenya. The Chinese government used their agreement
regarding the transportation system to threaten Kenya that they will pull of the funding if they
don’t lift the ban of Chinese fish imports. After some time, the Kenyan government used their
largest port, the Port of Mambasa, as a collateral for Chinese loans and the Chinese government
is trying to relinquish control of the port because of the unpaid loans
