 FROM FATHER RICH
This week we begin our annual walk along the path we call Advent. In Latin, Ad-
vent is ad-venio: “to come to.” Advent is the time when we prepare to celebrate that
Christ “came to “ us, lived with us, taught us, saved us, and will come again to bring
justice and peace. In our daily life when we celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, and
jubilees we do not pretend they haven’t happened yet. The same is true in Advent. In
Advent we do not pretend that Christ hasn’t come yet and we are waiting for the
baby to be born. Rather, we prepare to celebrate that the world will never be the same. Christ came in the
past! Christ is here in the present! Christ will come again! We look forward to his coming again in majesty
when we will all experience the fullness of justice and peace. Consider the way a young child waits for the
arrival of a loved one: he or she checks the calendar, constantly looks out the window, and always asks, “Is
today the day?” The child’s whole being is alive with anticipation. Imagine if our world was completely in-
fluenced by those filled with this kind of anticipation - anticipation for Christ’s return. Is today the day?
Advent lasts four weeks to symbolize the four thousand years or so that people waited for the coming of
the Savior. An Advent wreath is used to help us count the weeks of Advent, which begins on the fourth
Sunday before Christmas. The circle of the wreath means eternity, the continuing presence of God and the
evergreens symbolize everlasting life. The four candles are for the four weeks. Three candles are purple
and the candles are the candle for the third week is pink, symbolizing joy. At Christmas, the four candles
are replaced with white ones to symbolize that Jesus, our light, has come into the world.
In general, the three readings for today speak of the “end time” and the “now time,” in other words, our
destiny in God and the consequences of that destiny for our present living.
The promises proclaimed by Isaiah include truth, peace, and light—all of which are deep spiritual long-
ings embedded in the human soul. And yet to reach the fulfillment of these promises, both Paul and Jesus
tell us that we need spiritual alertness and attentiveness. We need readiness to receive the truth, peace,
and light that come from God. In fact, we often find our alertness compromised. We are dulled by sin
(Romans), worn down by the ordinary routines of life (Gospel), and perhaps even unaware of the hope
(Isaiah). We remember the words of Fr. Tom who said during our Parish Mission that sometimes we have
to break our daily routine to find and experience God in a special way. We need each other in the Church
to stay attentive and alert to the hope and the promise that belongs to us.

6TH GRADE NEWS
Recently the 6th Grade Class participated in an Art Contest sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transpor-
tation. Some of the art created has been sent to Springfield to compete with other Illinois schools for the
IDOT Safety Calendar. The theme for the competition is “See Orange. Slow Down. Save Lives.” This theme
reminds all drivers the importance of safe driving in work zones. Congratulations to our finalists: Douglas
Kosch, Jessica Mendoza, Mary Ann Tolentino, and Carmen Vazquez. Good luck in the next judging level.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS: The 2011 Entertainment Books are available for purchase in the school office.
The cost of each book is $25.00. They make wonderful gifts! If you would like to purchase one, please con-

Just a reminder that if you take a name tag from the Sharing
Tree, that the gifts for the children and families need to be re-
turned before 5:00 PM Sunday, December 12 to allow enough
time to sort and package gifts. Please make sure
that the name tag is attached to the wrapped gift for easy iden-
tification. The gift may be a toy or an article of clothing
$15.00-$20.00. Early drop-offs will be greatly appreciated.

OPLATKI SALE BAPTISMAL PREP CLASS

“Oplatki” sale will take place after every Mass on

Adwent - czas oczekiwania, milczenia, refleksji i modlitwy.
Pewien mężczyzna udał sie do zakonnika klauzurowego. Spytał go;
-Czego uczy ciebie to milczące życie? – spytał.
Mnich nabierając wodę ze studni powiedział do swego gościa:
-Spójrz w głąb tej studni. Co widzisz?
Człowiek spojrzał do studni.- Nic nie widzę – stwierdził.
Po pewnym czasie, zakonnik, który stał nieruchomo,
ponownie zwrócił się do gościa:
- Spójrz teraz! Co widzisz w studni?
Człowiek posłuchał i powiedział:
- Teraz widzę siebie samego, odbijam się w wodzie.
Mnich wyjaśnił:
-Widzisz, gdy zanurzam wiadro, woda jest poruszona.
Teraz natomiast woda jest spokojna.
Taki jest efekt milczenia: człowiek dostrzega siebie samego.
Przeżywamy dzisiaj pierwszą niedzielę Adwentu i rozpoczynamy nowy rok liturgiczny. Adwent jest
czasem oczekiwania na przyjście Chrystusa w tajemnicy Bożego Narodzenia. Jest to czas refleksji nad
obecnością Chrystusa w naszym codziennym życiu. Słowo „Adwent” pochodzi od łacińskiego słowa
„Adventus” i oznacza przyjście. Okres Adwentu pomaga nam przygotować się nie tylko na Święta
Bożego Narodzenia, ale również na powtórne przyjście Chrystusa. Całe nasze życie jest więc
Adwentem.
W okresie Adwentu widzimy w kościele wieniec adwentowy, który jest symbolem czterech tysięcy
lat oczekiwania na przyjście Zbawiciela. Cztery świece adwentowe przypominają nam, że Okres
Adwentu trwa cztery tygodnie. Zielony wieniec adwentowy jest symbolem życia i ciągłej obecności
Boga wśród nas. Trzy świece fioletowe wzywają nas do czuwania i przygotowania na przyjście Pana,
a świeca różowa oznacza radość z tego, że Pan jest już blisko. W okresie Bożego Narodzenia świece te
zostaną zastąpione świecami białymi, które będą nam przypominać, że Chrystus jest światłem świata.
Niech ten czas Adwentu będzie czasem refleksji i modlitwy.
