A decimal is a number that shows tenths, hundredths, and so on, by using a decimal point.

The decimal 3.25 has three digits: 3 2 5

The decimal 3.25 is written in standard form.
In word form, 3.25 is written: three and twenty-five hundredths

Place Value
Place-value tables show the value of each digit in a decimal. You need to know the value of each digit to
write the number in expanded form.

Example:
Hundreds Tens Ones Decimal point Tenths Hundredths
2 9 8 . 0 4
There are no tenths in this number. That is why there is a 0 (zero) written in the tenths place. Here is 298.04
written in expanded form and word form.

standard form: 298.04

expanded form: 200 + 90 + 8 + 0.04
word form: two hundred ninety-eight and four hundredths

Decimal Place Value Chart

The first place after the decimal is got by dividing the number by 10; it is called the tenths place.

The second place after the decimal is got by dividing the number by 100; it is called the hundredths place.

The third place after the decimal is got by dividing the number by 1000; it is called the thousandths place.

1. How to write the place value of the digit 45.123?

The place of 3 in the decimal 45.123 is 3/1000.

The place of 2 in the decimal 45.123 is 2/100

The place of 1 in the decimal 45.123 is 1/10

Ordering Decimals

In ordering decimals we will learn how to compare two or more decimals.

(i) Convert each of them as like decimals.

(ii) Compare these decimals just as we compare two whole numbers ignoring decimal point.

1. Which is greater of 0.89 and 2.01?

Since whole number part 2 > whole number part 0
Therefore, 2.01 > 0.89

Write the decimal numbers in ascending order using < sign:

(i) 4.926, 18.324, 18.428, 18.528, 18.234

(ii) 72.09, 72.19, 72.91, 72.17, 72.81

(iii) 301.13, 301.03, 301.31, 301.30

(iv) 107.08, 107.81, 107.80, 107.88

Addition of Decimal Fractions

In addition of decimal fractions we will discuss here how to add two or more decimals.

The rules of adding decimal numbers are:

(i) Write the digits of the given numbers one below the other such that all the decimal
points are in the same vertical line.

(ii) Add as we add whole numbers.

(iii) Put the decimal point of the sum vertically below the other decimal points.

1. Add 14.02, 198.3, 394.051.

2. Add $ 205.40, $ 80.75 and $ 1493.50

3. Add 143.21; 89.025;1001.002; 975.35

4. Add: 91.4; 31.83; 101

Problems on Addition of Decimal Fractions

We know to add two or more decimals:

(i) Convert all the decimals to be added into like decimals.

(ii) Write the decimals in column in such a way that the decimal pints of all the decimals are in the same
column and the digits having the same place values are in the same column.

(iii) Add the decimal ignoring the decimal points.

(iv) Put the decimal point in the sum directly under the decimal points of all the decimals.

1. Find the sum of 12.279, 3.00046 and 742.000372.

12.279000

3.000460

+ 742.000372

2. The rain fall in a city during the months of July, August and September were 9.82 cm,
5.24 cm and 2.32 cm respectively. Find the total rainfall during three months.

Rainfall in July = 9.82 cm

Rainfall in August = cm

Rainfall in September = + 2.32 cm

Therefore total rainfall = cm

3. Mike walked 14.5 km on Monday, 12.75 km on Tuesday, 15.8 km on Wednesday and

18.6 km on Thursday. How many kilometres did Mahesh walk in 4 days?

Mike walked on

Mike walked on Monday = km

Mike walked on Tuesday = 12.75 km

Mike walked on Wednesday = km

Mike walked on Thursday = + 18.60 km

Therefore, total distance walked in four days = km

Subtraction of Decimal Fractions

The rules of subtracting decimal numbers are:

(i) Write the digits of the given numbers one below the other such that the decimal points are in the same
vertical line.

(ii) Subtract as we subtract whole numbers.

1. Subtract 8.93 from 13.94

2. Subtract 191.765 from 843.92

3. Find 492 kg 500 g - 283 kg 650 g.

Problems on Subtraction of Decimal Fractions

We know to subtract one decimal number from the other decimal number:

(i) Change the decimal fractions to like decimal fractions.

(ii) Write the smaller number below the greater number such that the digits in the corresponding places are
one below the other and the decimal points are placed in the same vertical line.

1. Find the difference of 16.7 from 25.2.

2. What should be added to 85.264 to get 164.253?

3. A container holds 60.25 liter of water, if 39.7 liters of water I used up then how much water is left is left in
the container?

Quantity of water in the container =

Quantity of water used up = - 39.70 l

Quantity of water left = _______

4. Jenny purchased vegetables for $ 29.75. She paid $ 100 more note. How much money did she get back?

Jenny paid = $ 100

Jenny purchased vegetables for $ 29.75

Jenny got back = 100.00

- 29.75

Multiplication of Decimal Numbers

The rules of multiplying decimals are:

(i) Take the two numbers as whole numbers (remove the decimal) and multiply.

(ii) In the product, place the decimal point after leaving digits equal to the total number of decimal places in
both numbers.

(iii) Counting decimal point must always be done from the units place of the product.

1. Find 43.5 × 4

2. Find 91.32 × 83.

3. Find the product of 49.6 × 14

Problems on Multiplication of Decimal Fractions

To multiply a decimal number:

(i) Perform the multiplication ignoring decimal point.

(ii) Place the decimal point in the product to get as many decimal places in the product as
there are in the multiplicant.

1. Price of 1 metre cloth is $ 49.75. Find the price of 16 metres of cloth.

Price of 1 metre cloth = 49.75

Price of 15 metres of cloth = ×6

2.A train can run 45.8 km in one hour. What will be the distance travelled by the train in 5
hours?

Distance covered by train in 1 hour = 45.8 km

Distance covered by train in 5 hours = 45.8

3. 2.35 m of cloth is needed to make a shirt. How many metre of cloth is needed to make
10 such shirts?

Cloth needed for 1 shirt = 2.35 m

Cloth needed for 10 shirts = 2.35

Division of a Decimal by a Whole Number

The rules to divide a decimal by a whole number are:

(i) Divide as in division of numbers ignoring the decimal point.

(ii) When you reach the tenths digit, place the decimal in the quotient.

Note: When the number of digits in the dividend is less and the division is not complete, keep adding zeroes at
every step till the division is complete as in example 1 and example 2.

1. Solve: 100.4 ÷ 25

2. Divide: 191.5 ÷ 5

3. Divide: 1.21 ÷ 11

4. Divide: 798.3 ÷ 36
