DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF ONBOARD PERSONNEL

SHIPBOARD AREAS:
I. DECK DEPARTMENT- maintenance of ships’ hull and navigational duties

MASTER/CAPTAIN - Captain of the vessel and ensures vessel’s compliance with International &
Nationals Laws
CHIEF OFFICER - Responsible for the vessel’s cargo operations & supervising the deck crew.
SECOND OFFICER - Vessel’s Navigator & GMDSS/ Radio Officer
DECK CADET - Assists the Master & other Deck Officers in preparing paper works
THIRD OFFICER - Assists Second Officer in Navigational Responsibilities
BOTSWAIN - Supervise the AB and OS in cleaning, rust scaling and painting
 ABLE SEAMAN
 ORDINARY SEAMAN

II. ENGINE/ TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT - runs and maintains all machineries

CHIEF ENGINEER – responsible for all operations & maintenance of the engineering department
FIRST ASST. ENGINEER – supervise daily maintenance and operation of engine department
SECOND ASST. ENGINEER – second in command of the engine department
THIRD ASSISTANT ENGINEER - in charge of boilers, fuel, auxiliary engines, feed systems
JUNIOR ENGINEER - officer-of-the-watch under the supervision of senior officers
MOTORMAN – senior unlicensed crewmember in the engine room
PUMPMAN – responsible for fuel tankers
OILER – keeps machinery lubricated
WIPER - responsible of wiping down machineries

III. FOOD AND BEVERAGE


FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGER – ensures service quality of meals and drinks.
MAITRE D’ HOTEL - greets customers, supervises restaurant staff & ensures top quality of
standards is met.
EXECUTIVE CHEF - responsible for overall operation of the kitchen area including administration.
PASTRY CHEF – prepares pastries and desserts.
CHEF DE PARTIE - prepares gourmet cuisine and sauces
SOUS CHEF – maintains food quality in food preparation and cooking

IV. PURSER – a.k.a. ‘accounting department, is responsible for all accounting work of the ship.
CHIEF PURSER – manage the day-to-day issues of the passengers & crew administration
DEPUTY PURSER - manage operations within the purser dep’t as directed by the Chief Purser
ASSISTANT PURSER - manage operations within the purser office and front desk.
JUNIOR ASSISTANT PURSER - operations on reception area dealing directly with the passengers.
CREW PURSER - operations relating to crew administration

V. HOUSEKEEPING - maintenance of the passengers’ cabins , laundry and dry cleaning requirements
CHIEF HOUSEKEEPER - Oversees all operations within the housekeeping department.
ASST. CHIEF HOUSEKEEPER - Responsible for all operations within the housekeeping
department.
FLOOR SUPERVISOR - in charge of all housekeeping duties on a certain floor / floors onboard
ROOM STEWARD – cleaning and maintenance of passenger cabins
LINENKEEPER – assists in processing all laundry and dry cleaning requirements

VI. ENTERTAINMENT – keeps passengers busy and entertained


CRUISE DIRECTOR - in charge of all on board entertainment.
SHOW SINGER & SHOW DANCER
GUEST ENTERTAINER - Comedy Variety, Magicians, Illusionists, Jugglers, Impressionists,
Ventriloquists, etc.
STAGE/ PRODUCTION MANAGER – responsible for running the shows & managing technicians
SOUND & LIGHT TECHNICIAN – provide technical assistance

VII. MEDICAL
CHIEF DOCTOR - oversees and supervises the activities of cases on board
CREW DOCTOR/ PHYSICIAN - responsible for the treatment of crew members
CHIEF NURSE – supervise the nursing staff aboard
SHIP NURSE – provide day-to-day health care to passengers and crew members
PARAMEDIC – responds to emergency situations, treats sick and injured people
