SUBJECT : PIPELINE TRENCHING SLOPE STABILITY
SKETCH
As per drawing that trenching slope can be shown this figure below :
DATA INPUT
Environmental Parameter
Soil Cohession cu = 4.9 kN/m2
Soil Frictional angle = 18 deg
Back fill depth H = 3 m
horizontal Length of slope L = 9 m
toe width nH = 2 m
nH = 1.5
Slope angle to horizontal = arc tan ( H/L )
= 18.48 deg
Water Density w = 9.8 kN/m3
Soil Density‐dry dry = 6.85 kN/m3
Soil Density‐submerged sat = 16.65 kN/m3
The factor of safety Fs as computed and reprenseted by equation below applies to one trial circle.
Fs = [ c Ln + Wn cos n .tan ]
Wn sin n
this procedure is followed for a number of trial circles until one finds the one for which the factor of
safety .
For any given slope angle ( see sketch below ), the center of the first trial circle centre O may be
determined as proposed by Fellenius (1927). The direction A and B may be taken from table below :
table 1 Direction Angles
Mark point C whose position is as shown in figure below join CO. The centre of additional circles lie on the
line CO extended.

The slope stability analysis by using slice method is explained the figure below :

figure 2 Slice Method
PROJECT NAME : JANGKRIK COMPLEX PROJECT
SUBJECT : PIPELINE TRENCHING SLOPE STABILITY
Step by step the Slice Method
1 Determine slope angle to horizontal ( ) as per actual condition
2 Determine direction angle A and B see table 1
3 find r ( radius ) of critical slope, intersection line A ( A ) and line B ( B )
4 By using method slice , the weight , W of slice per unit length :
W = sat . H. L
with
H : average height of slice ( take H for conservative analysis )
L :dth of slice
Determine the centre of gravity of W per slice
5 find the angle ( n ) of intersection circle ( r ) with centre of gravity W per slice
6 Determine FS with formula :
Fs = [ c Ln + Wn cos n .tan ]
Wn sin n
Fs = [ c Ln + Wn cos n .tan ]
Wn sin n
= 1.921
