inevitable, and so was my attempt to explain the spirit of giving
to a 4 year old. Her eyes lit up at every aisle, and the ‘wish list’
was getting longer and longer until finally, the teachable moment
was too important to pass up. And so began our conversation RSCA.org
about the idea of giving, and friendship, and exchanging presents,
and enjoying time with loved ones... I was pretty sure the message
didn’t sink in, but at the preschool holiday visit the next day,
she made a new friend and showed generosity and thoughtfulness
that warmed my heart. Sometimes a small gesture is so worthwhile.
So for 2020, I hope to focus on more of those teachable moments
— for my kids, myself, and the many volunteers and professionals
I connect with. May we never be too busy to try, to talk about
important subjects, and to continue learning from and helping
one another.
As you reflect on your own resolutions for this new DeCADe,
you might want to consider opportunities close to your home
here in Redwood Shores. RSCA is looking for additional
board members to help us with our community building,
advocacy, and communication efforts that benefit everyone
who lives and works in the Shores. For information about
getting involved, please contact president@rsca.org and plan
to attend our annual meeting on February 11th.
RSCA wishes you and your family a very happy new year!

svCw’s resCu program: focus on fop
Happy new Year from Silicon valley Clean Water!
We are committed to making the new year, and every year, a healthy one for the people we serve and for our environment
by providing wastewater conveyance and treatment.
We are continuing to make progress on the Regional environmental Sewer Conveyance Upgrade (ReSCU) Program, which
includes rehabilitation and replacement of SvCW’s conveyance system. When finished, the ReSCU Program will ensure
that SvCW can efficiently, reliably, and safely convey and treat wastewater from its four member agencies, belmont, San
Carlos, Redwood City, and the West bay Sanitary District, for many decades to come.
is month’s ReSCU Program update focuses on the Front of Plant Project (FoP), which includes a new wastewater receiving
lift station, new headworks to remove rags and grit before they reach the wastewater treatment plant, and an influent pipe to
convey flow from the headworks to the plant.
Design for the FoP project is on track, with 100% of the design package being completed in January. e design package
describes all equipment, facilities, and structures that will be constructed and installed over the next few months. We are on
target to complete 17 of the 29 wall panels this month and preparing to place the 2nd level deck slab of the headworks structure.
Inside the vertical shaft that will house the Receiving Lift Station (RLS), we are installing rebar, the reinforcing steel bars for
the concrete base slab. e base slab will support the lift pumps and related piping. It will be poured in early 2020. We’ve
also installed stairway access and a working platform at the shaft to provide safe and easy access for the construction crews.
e safety of our team –which includes our full-time onsite staff and our construction partners -- is our highest priority.
We put our stakeholders first and our construction schedule second, and we make safety everyone’s responsibility on the
ReSCU Program. We emphasize our commitment to safe work practices daily at the start of every construction activity
and at the beginning of every team meeting.
For more information on the ReSCU Program,
please visit https://svcw-rescu.org.
