CHAPTER I

Introduction

People nowadays are wanting to have healthier body in an instant that they are always
looking for beneficial drinks that might help as to achieve their body goals. One of the most
popular beneficial drink was tea. , “because it has numerous benefits for the body when
consumed in regulated quantities. It is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, has elements that
help you relax and overall is full of rich antioxidants and blood purifying agents.” (Raina, 2019).
Many people drink tea because it is pleasant and soothing drink tea has many health benefits,
which were known to ancient cultures like Chinese and Indians . And because of this
generation’s innovative and creative minds they have created Milk tea, a beverage containing
some combination of tea and milk to add more life to the usual tea.

In the year of 2008, milk tea arrived in our shores. It became popular and loved at an all-
time high. As milk tea shops keep popping up with their extensive menus the sheer lover of milk
tea fans are growing too. Most people love to drink this beverage because of the unique taste
produced by mixing milk and tea. Nowadays, it's not surprising to see someone you know
drinking milk tea at least once a week, lining up for hours, or having it delivered to their doorstep
(Castro, 2019).

However, excessive consumption of milk tea has negative effects that could pose risks to
the body’s health. There are few side effects of drinking an excessive amount of milk tea that
you wish you knew before. Increases the acidic content of tea can affect badly to your health if
you consume it excessively. According to the study of Health Status Team (n,d.), “Many
acquired a habit to add a bit of milk to their regular cup of tea. It is a matter of taste, but
scientists now say that that drop of milk can completely negate all the benefits tea can have on
our health.” Milk tea is beverage with a unique taste that can satisfy your thirst and refresh you
in this hot weather, but we must consider the ingredients and how it affects our health before it is
too late. In this study we would like to inform and warn everyone, especially teenagers who are
addicted to this beverage, about the effects on excessively drinking Milk tea to our health and
everyday life.
Statement of the Problem

Milk tea is extremely popular because of the unique taste and health benefits produced
by mixing milk and tea. But,these delicious and unique milk tea have also been shown to have
negative effects. One of its worst effects is, it promotes addiction. Caffeine is an addictive
compound. This makes you want to consume milk tea more, however too much consumption of
milk tea can become more dangerous. It can have numerous effects on the body, especially when
mixing milk and tea which makes it even worse for the health. Adding milk to tea may hamper
your system. According to Macrobiotic Health Coach Shilpa Arora, "Milk makes tea acidic. Tea
has potent antioxidants catechins and epicatechins, but adding milk cuts down the amount of
these antioxidants making this otherwise healthy drinks a source of inflammation and acidity".
To avoid the risk the researchers suggested that it’s necessary to know your limitations on how
much and how often you should drink. In response to the problem. The purpose of this study is
to provide information and considerations on milk tea intake.

Moreover, this study aims to answer these ff questions:

1. What are the negative effects of excessive milk tea consumption?


2. How does adding milk to the tea with tappioca pearls worse for the health?
3. Is there a significant relationship between amount of milk tea and health condition of
the respondents experience?
4. What are the profile of the respondents considering the following variables?
a. Gender
b. Age
c. Year level

Significance of the Study

Milk tea shops are winning in the market today because of huge trend of this Milk tea to

the people especially to the students and teenagers. A lot of people are addicted to this beverage

that they tend consume milk tea excessively more than the suggested consumption every week

without knowing the negative effect of this drink to our health and life. Moreover, the
researchers chose to determine the negative effect of excessive consumption of milk tea to our

health and life.

The main purpose of this study is to inform the people especially the teenagers about the

effects of the trending drink which is the milk tea. It is important to know what are the

ingredients of the drinks we always consume because it might negatively affect our health

particularly when we are uncontrollably consuming it. Especially nowadays, people tend to

follow the trend in our social media and most of the milk tea shops proposes different creative

marketing according to the trend that consumer will buy immediately even when it’s not

necessary. The researcher want to take action before milk tea addiction become a big hindrance

to our health and everyday life.

Students. The student will be benefit from this study by learning new information about the

milk tea they probably always drink after class. Students are large population that use social

media everyday, wherein they found the marketing of different milk tea shops that persuades

them to buy everyday even when it’s not necessary.

Social Media Users. The netizens who use social media will benefit from this study because

milk tea is largely marketed to the consumer in social media and most of people follow the trend

in this medium.

Adults. The adults will benefit from this study because some of adults are also addicted drinking

milk tea, they will be inform and aware and in that case they can share to their children what are

the effects of excessive drinking of this beverage.

Other Researchers. This study will benefit other researchers who will study similar topics to
our study this can be serve as a basis for the study that they will conduct in the future.
Hypothesis

Null

Milk tea is a popular drink today and the researchers conclude that consuming milk tea
have bad effects which may include insomnia, anxiety, addiction, bloating and more, which is
due to the ingredients used in the composition of the Milk tea.

Alternative

On some reports the consumption of milk tea has caused of Food Poisoning, also there’s
a report saying that a 14-year old girl have undigestible tapioca pearls and reports here in the
Philippines of consuming milk tea causes acid reflux and even death. So, it is widely concluded
by the researchers that consuming milk tea has negative effects and must be careful of its
consumption.

Scope and Limitations

This study conducted in the year 2019-2020 focuses on the negative impacts of excessive
consumption of milk tea to our health and life. The researchers will also state how does milk tea
negatively affect our health by emphasizing its ingredients and process done. The researchers
will also conduct interviews to students who are addictively consuming milk tea, specifically
Senior High School in STI Academic Center Sta. Mesa. Lastly, at the end of the study the
researchers would give effective ways to reduce addiction on milk tea and recommend some
healthier drinks that could be an alternative to milk tea.
CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature


Studies related to the present research were reviewed, it may be a foreign or local.

Foreign
Milktea

Milktea refers to several forms of beverage found in many cultures, containing some
combination of tea and milk. Beverages vary based on the amount of each of these key
ingredients, the method of preparation, and the inclusion of other ingredients. It often replaces
coffee in many countries considering it still has just about the same amount of caffeine as a cup
of coffee depending on what you get, and you can dress it up to be something extravagant like a
chai milk tea, bubble tea, or just simple breakfast tea with a splash of milk and honey.

Milk tea is the new ice coffee in our generation that is rapidly increasing in sales in the
market. It offer a unique taste that persuades people, mostly teenagers to buy every time they’ll
see a shop. Different milk tea shops offer a wide variety of teas and flavours to entice their
adventurous clientele since the competition in this product is getting stiffer as this beverage
becomes a trend in every country.

History of Milk Tea

Taiwan’s tea industry started with the early Chinese settlement in the 17th century.
Oolong tea is one of the few featured products of Taiwan, however, owing to its limited annual
output, prices are high. Economic prosperity in the 1960s largely improved the livelihood of the
local people and promoted domestic demand for tea and it is now among the most discriminating
and dynamic tea markets in the world. Tea houses in Taiwan were originally brought to Taiwan
by Chinese immigrants. Tea houses have a long history in China and their form has changed
tremendously over the years. The modern Taiwanese tea house is a combination and
improvisation of the traditional tea house, the English tea house and other innovations.

The traditional tea houses in Taiwan, an endangered species, largely appeal to the elderly
segment of the market. Visiting a tea house is a leisure and social event. The “tea art house” is
the new version of a traditional Chinese tea house, which emerged in the 1970s. These tea art
houses focus on the quality of tea leaves, serving utensils, and water for boiling tea, paying
attention to every detail of the ritual. Their customers are willing to pay high prices for quality.

The modern tea culture and tea houses emerged in the mid-1980s. The development of
modern Taiwanese tea houses can be subdivided into two phases or streams. The first stream is
also known as the “bubble tea craze,” which emerged in the late 1980s. The concept started to be
exported to other countries including Hong Kong and mainland China in the early 1990s.

Ingredients of Milk tea

The main components of bubble tea are tea, milk, and tapioca pearls – as well as
alarmingly high levels of sugar. Like coffee, bubble tea’s ingredients might not be so bad on
their own, but when they’re loaded with sweetener and artificial flavour, they lose their
nutritional value fast. Tapioca pearls – loved for their chewy, candy-like texture and often
referred to by their Chinese name, boba – are as bad for your health as actual candy. Boiled and
then saturated with sugar, those fun little balls can each add five to 14 calories to your drink,
which means that just ¼ cup of them can add over 100 extra calories to your already calorically-
dense drink. Not only do boba add extra calories, they don’t actually contribute anything in the
way of nutrition. Boba are basically all carbs – they lack any minerals and contain no fiber.

Milk and tea are not necessarily a healthy combination. Both beverage are good sources
of nutrients and antioxidants, but studies show that mixing them result in a number of negative
effects. True enough, tea has anti-diabetic properties and improves cardiovascular health. But
when milk is added, its anti-diabetic properties and antioxidant potential are reduced.

A team of researchers in Charite Hospital at the University of Berlin in Germany said


milk also eliminates protective effects of tea against cardiovascular disease. The researchers also
discovered that milk proteins called caseins reduce efficiency of the tea compound called
catechin, which protects the heart from disease.

A 2002 study of Richard Anderson and Marilyn Polansky of Beltsville Human Nutrition
Research Center in United States, meanwhile, found out that adding 50 grams of milk per cup of
tea decreases insulin activity by 90%. Insulin activity is an action of a substance where the blood
glucose (sugar) level in humans is lowered. When tea’s insulin activity is reduced, the body’s
protection against diabetes also decreases.

Local

Negative Effects of Milk tea

Nutrition can be a tricky thing – we are always looking for the next big beneficial super
food or drink. One of the most popular health drinks in the world today is tea, because it has
numerous benefits for the body when consumed in regulated quantities. It is rich in anti-
inflammatory properties, has elements that help you relax and overall is full of rich antioxidants
and blood purifying agents. When you drink too much tea, however, it can become very
dangerous. It can have major negative effects on the body, especially when you consume it with
milk and sugar. According to studies, these are the negative effects of excessive consumption of
milk tea:
 Insomnia
Like in coffee, tea, specifically black tea, which is what is used to brew milk tea is
rich in caffeine. When your body is overloaded with caffeine, especially in the second
half of the day, it can cause sleep disorders like insomnia. While small quantities will not
do this, drinking an excess of more than two cups a day can cause major sleep issues.
 Anxiety
While some teas like chamomile are known for their relaxing properties,
sometimes the side effects of drinking too much milk tea can also be anxiety. This is
because tea can activate the brain cells to calm you down but when you push it and drink
too much, it can create an imbalance in brain chemicals which leads to anxiety.
 Pimples
One of the most visible milk tea side effects for the skin is the appearance of
pimples – these zits begin to manifest all over your body. In small quantities, tea can
help detoxify your body, but excess tea generates extreme heat and creates an imbalance
in the body chemicals that result in an outbreak of pimples. The most affected areas for
an outbreak of pimples caused by over-consumption of tea include the face, neck, and
chest.
 Constipation
Tea has caffeine and another chemical called theophylline – the former is great
for your excretory system and can help improve motion flow. The latter is healthy for
detoxifying your body, calming your mind and muscles and improving blood flow.
However, when you consume too much tea, theophylline can cause extreme constipation
as it dries your body and dehydrates you.
 Blood Pressure Imbalance
In small amounts, it can help improve circulation, maintain heart health, brain and
nerve functions and help improve your immune system. But when you over-consume the
drink, it increases your heart rate, leading to high blood pressure; or slows it down too
much due to its relaxing properties, which lowers your blood pressure too much. This
can be very bad for your body.
 Possibilities of Miscarriage
Tea is great for the body due to properties that help in relaxing the muscles,
calming the mind, increasing blood flow and detoxifying the body. When you’re
pregnant, however, relaxing your muscles too much or having too many detoxifying
elements in the body or irregular blood flow can lead to miscarriages – this is why
pregnant women are asked to monitor their tea intake very carefully.

Milk tea in Philippines

Milk tea has completely invaded the Philippine market. Wherever you go you can see
milk tea shops around Philippines ranked second in Milk Tea consumption in Southeast Asia
according to Grab food’s 2018 data. In the Philippines alone, Grab's milk tea orders increased by
3,500% from June to December 2018. Considering that the Philippines isn’t even on top of the
ranking in app-based food delivery services, yet the country managed to dominate Grab’s milk
tea statistics. Metro Manila has an abundant number of milk-tea shops giving Filipinos lots of
choices to satisfy their newfound love for milk teas. While the base milk-tea drink may all taste
similar, there are more ways than one to add flavours to this drink – that’s how milk-tea shops
are defining themselves in this competitive but yummy market.
CHAPTER III

Methodology

As it is indicated in the title, this chapter includes the research methodology of the
dissertation. In more details, in this part the researchers outline the Method of Research, Locale
of the Study, Population of the Study, Research Instrument and Gathering Procedures that will
give more validation to the study. This is where the interview is conducted that will provide an
individual opinion about the study.

Method of Research

For this study, interview research method was utilized as it best served to answer the
questions and purposes of the study. Interviews can be defined as a qualitative research
technique which involves conducting intensive individual interviews with a small number of
respondents to explore their perspectives on a particular idea, program or situation. Using this
method help the researcher to obtain a more detailed information and have a better
understanding and explanation about the problem on others perspective.

Locale of the study

The study was conducted at the secondary grade levels (Grade 11 and 12) in STI
Academic Center Sta. Mesa which is located at P. Sanchez Street corner Pat Antonio Street, Sta.
Mesa, Manila, 1035 Metro Manila.

Population or Sample of Study

The researcher came up with 10 interviewees of STI Academic Center Sta. Mesa,
specifically Senior High School as the population of the study. In this study the researchers select
students who are consuming milk tea in their daily lives, addicted to milk tea and students who
experience negative effects from drinking milk tea too much. The participation and answers of
the selected interviewees are used as guide to this study
Research instrument

The instrument used was a researcher-made question checklist to gather the needed data
for the study. In the preparation of the instrument, the requirements in the designing of good data
collection instrument were considered. For instance, statement describing the situations or issues
pertaining was toned down to accommodate the preparedness of the interviewees. Open-ended
options were provided to accommodate to free formatted views related to the topics or issues. In
this way, the instrument is authorized to obtain valid responses of the interviewees.

Gathering Procedures

The researchers had allotted vigorous time, effort and cooperation in developing their
questionnaire so as to serve its intended interviewees. When the questionnaire was finished, the
researchers start to select students who can be the interviewees for the study and schedule their
date and time of interview. After the interviewees, the researchers were able to collect data that
helped the study to find its conclusion. Along with primary data, the researchers also made use of
secondary resources in the form of published articles and literatures to support the interviews
result.
