CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Being recognized as “academically excellent” by getting straight As or acquiring

a General Weighted Average above 90 using one's effort is a great thing that fulfills every

student's dream. Inside the classrooms of every school in the world, these achievements

anticipate the minds of every learner to demonstrate their maturity in taking their studies

seriously by attentively raising their hands during class recitations or reviewing their

written notes and lectures thoroughly to get high scores during examinations. Student-

achievers are more strived to create learning strategies to show an outstanding academic

performance inside the classroom setting.

Even some students seem to breeze through their school years, whereas others

struggle on tons of paperwork, putting them at risk for getting lost in the educational

system and not reaching their self-potential. Parents and teachers want to help students

succeed but there is little guidance on which learning techniques are the most effective

for improving educational outcomes. This leads students to make studying strategies that

are often effective, resulting in maximal gains in performance.

Moreover, Academic Excellence Awardee is a learner who attained high remarks

or grades, specifically, a General Weighted Average of 90 and above in all learning areas

(Department of Education, 2016). These students are highly recognized because of their

exemplary performances and skills in schools. Learning effectiveness and study strategies
are often used that were necessary for the students to do well in school and for improved

academic success. High percentages in tests and good academic performance are

frequently considered as indicators of academic achievement.

Some techniques like highlighting and rereading were potentially used because

students report that they rely heavily on these habits making it especially significant for

the examination of how well they work. The techniques include elaborative interrogation,

self-explanation, summarization, highlighting or underlining, keyword mnemonic,

imagery use for text learning, rereading, practice testing, distributed practice, and

interleaved practice

There are different techniques and strategies that students are using in acquiring

knowledge through learning as they are the center of the learning process. They play a

crucial role in achieving academic achievements. When learners keep an eye on their

response and results to their strategies, they maintain their learnings and they show higher

effectiveness and greater academic achievements. Students who are self-monitoring, who

set objectives or plans and who are trying to regulate and control their own cognition,

inspiration and attitude established upon these goals are more likely to perform much

better in academics.

Successful utilization of techniques and strategies appropriate to carrying out a

learning task has been defined as study skills. It signifies that any student who has

systematic study strategies and techniques can successfully utilize them can learn

thoroughly get greater achievements. Strategies and techniques play a crucial role

because it helps the learners learn more and enhance their academic performance.
However, in the Philippines, the development of the country is dependent on the

capability of its human resources. The knowledge and information advancement also

depend on the quality of learning. As 21st century arises, the nature of achievement is

continuously considered to be a trend for Filipinos as well as learners academic

performance that are often connected to the higher level of learning. Since the students

are at the core of learning process, basic education is offered by the government for their

progress and development. A development program designed for the recognition of the

outstanding performance of each learner in their respective area. In addition, these awards

are given to learner who successfully attained the set standards along with acknowledging

their development. In line with this, the Filipino learners are provided motivation and

encouragement to strive more for excellence that led them to think their way of achieving

own triumph (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2013). Their individual recipe that activate

each learner’s internal eagerness are said to be the backbone of academic success. These

learner’s motivation are considered as essential in academic achievement as it helps to

determine the values, attitude, and also the willingness of each learner that is manifested

in each progress and development. On the other hand, Learners develop their own steps

in achieving academic excellence that believed to be their strategies.

Philippines are more known as human resources, man power and land of skilled

workers but as we go beyond its connotations, this country is also achieving academic

success through the years. As it continuously developing, the Filipinos are also in

progress when it comes to discovering each strengths and weakness in terms of academic.

This means that human development plays a vital role in country’s growth and success. A

strategy from one becomes a whole advancement (Department of Education, 2016).


Many people in today’s society believe that having high grades is the standard of

intelligence that is much needed in order to get an award at the end of the school year, to

pass a whole semester and to meet those high expectations from their families. Hence, in

order for the students to meet those demands, they tend to create strategies to ace those

examinations. Having a high grade is very timely and a popular issue among teenagers

and parents which confuses a lot of people which concerned a lot of people and made

people curious about their strategies, how did they manage to get a grade is higher than

90 or are they Einstein-like. This grade issue has left a lot of question to people especially

the parents and including their co-student. Also, good and high grades attract good

opportunities in life, such as good future career with a good salary that can give a

comfortable life and a stepping stone to success.

In this regard, each Senior High School academic achievers of Tarlac National

High School (Main) have their own strategies and techniques which may have affected

the way they attain and mantain the academic success they're having. Their motivations

and eagerness may vary which may define their individual study habits. The habits, that

may be referred to as the strategies, among which are taking down notes during lectures,

reviewing regularly, advanced reading the lessons, and participation during class

discussions. There may also be underlying variables that may affect the habits which are

effective to different individuals such as their focus and memory retention. These are

called the study skills which may be learnt by an individual through the repetition of

techniques and have enhanced over the years.

Each learner has his own way of learning and retaining information, however,

there are few research-backed strategies which are usually more effective than others
which may or may not be used by the majority of the academic achievers of Tarlac

National High School (Main).

Therefore, these situations are what made the researchers to conduct this study

aiming to determine the strategies used by Academic Excellence Awardees of Grade 12

students in Tarlac National High School and understand the impacts of setting different

academic strategies in the education learning of students inside the schools.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers of the study aim to seek answers from the following questions:

1. How can the respondents be described as to:

1.3. Strand

1.4. Religion

1.5. Type of Family

2. General Weighted Average in the last semester of S.Y. 2019-2020

3. What are the strategies of the Academic Excellence Awardees as to:

3.1. Review

3.2. Lectures or notes

3.3. Class participation

3.4. Memory retention

3.5. Group study


4. What are the implications of this study to the students, parents, school administration

and family?

Significance of the Study

This study is essential in various ways as it provides information regarding the

students using different learning strategies to get a General Weighted Average above 90

which will be beneficial to others.

To the School Administration. The paper will give idea to the school

administration as to the strategies used by the achievers and may help the students to

improve these strategies.

To the Guidance Counselors. The study aims to provide a point for guidance

counselors to give assistance and guidance for students to set learning strategies on their

studies.

To the Community. The research aims to make the community aware of the

different strategies that academic excellent awardees use. The paper may answer their

questions as to what the awardees do to improve their performance.

To the Parents. They will be informed as to the how the academic achievers

reach their academic goal. They can suggest the strategies to their children for the

betterment of their performance.

To the Students. The study will bring awareness to the students about the

different strategies utilized by academic excellence awardees which they may also try for

themselves and see if the strategies might help them improve their academic performance

as well.
To the Future Researchers. This study will serve as a reference for future

researchers that may be interested in the subject tackled in the research paper.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of the study is to determine and distinguish the strategies and

techniques that the learners use to achieve academic excellence. The researchers had

selected and informed several Grade 12 students to answer the inquiries put into the

questionnaire that the researchers prepared.

The study is specifically conducted among Senior High School specifically on

Grade 12 students with a General Weighted Average of 90 above and is limited only to

San Roque Campus of Tarlac National High School-Main due to the reason that it is the

most accessible research workplace for the researchers.

The research generally excludes students from Grade 12 who did not meet the

General Weighted Average of 90 above.

Definition of Terms

This section contains some definition of variables and other involved

unfamiliar words in the study which are defined to give better understanding and clarity.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. It refers to the demonstrated ability to perform,

achieve, and/or excel in scholastic activities. In our study, it means a student who attained

a General Weighted Average of 90 above.


BACKBONE. It refers as the foundation or most substantial or sturdiest part of

something.

BREEZE. It refers to a thing that is easy to do or accomplish.

COGNITION. It means the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and

understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.

CONNOTATION. It describes an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition

to its literal or primary meaning

EXEMPLARY. It explains the service as a desirable model; representing the best

of its kind. In our study, it means the exceptional academic performance of the Academic

Excellent Awardees.

GENERAL WEIGHTED AVERAGE. It refers to the representation (often

numerical) of the overall scholastic standing of students used for evaluation.

INTERLEAVED. It describes the division (memory or processing power)

between a number of tasks by allocating segments of it to each task in turn.

INTERROGATION. It defines the process of questioning someone in a formal

event.

MAXIMAL. It describes as the process of constituting a maximum; the highest

possible.

RETENTION. It refers to the fact of keeping something in one's memory. In our

study, it is the process of stocking knowledge from previous class discussions.

THOROUGHLY. It defines as the completion with regard to every detail
