7.0 DISCUSSION
7.1 FLUID DENSITY
From the experiments, the fluid density value obtained for water is 930 kg/m3 and
the fluid density value for oil is 910 kg/m3. This indicates that water density is
higher than oil because mass affects density. The higher the mass, the higher the
density.

There was a slight error in running the experiment because the position of the eye
was not perpendicular / parallel to the measuring cylinder reading scale. Therefore,
the experiment was repeated 2 times to obtain the average value.

7.2 SPECIFIC GRAVITY

From the experiments, the specific gravity value of water is 0.905 and the specific
gravity value of oil is 0.992. This is because, fluid density affects specific gravity
values. The higher the density of the fluid the higher the specific gravity value.

There was a small error during the experiment because the eye position was
inconsistent / hydrometer reading scale. Therefore, the experiment was repeated 3
times to obtain the average value.

8.0 PRE LAB QUESTION

8.1 Define the density of a liquid.

8.2 State the Archimedes’ principle.

According to this principle the buoyant force on an object equals the weight of the
fluid it displaces. In equation form, Archimedes’ principle is

FB = wfl,

where FB is the buoyant force and wfl is the weight of the fluid displaced by the
object.
