LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 11 GENERAL MATHEMATICS

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of rational functions.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to accurately formulate and solve real-life problems
involving rational functions.
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
1. Represent rational function through an equation table of values and graph.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Representation of rational functions through table of values and graphs.
Reference: Teaching Guide from PNU page 44 – 53 x
Materials: TG, powerpoint presentation

Review of the definition of rational function

B. Lesson Proper
Day 1
“I Do It”
Present a simple scenario involving rational functions:
Average speed (or velocity) can be computed by the formula s = d/t. Consider a 100 – meter track
used for foot race. The speed of a runner can be computed by taking the time it will take him to run
the track and applying it to the formula s = 100/t, since the distance is fixed at 100 meters.
Represent the speed of a runner as a function of the speed of runner as a function of the time it
takes to run 100 meters in the track.

Continuing the scenario, construct a table of values for the speed of a runner against different run
time.

“We Do It”
𝑥 −1
Represent the rational function by f(x) = 𝑥+1
using table of values.
X -10 -8 -6 -4 -2 0 2 4 6 8 10
f(x)

“You Do It”
𝑥 2 −3𝑥 − 10
Represent the rational function by f(x) = 𝑥
using table of values.

IV. Evaluation
𝑥 −3
Construct a table of values for the function f(x) = 𝑥 −4 for -6  x  2, x taking on integer
values.

V. Assignment
How to represent rational function by graph?

Day 2
IV. Lesson Proper

“I Do It”
Using the table of values of s(x) = 100/x, sketch the graph of the rational function. Illustrate to
the students on how to graph rational function.

Guide Questions:
1. What will be the possible trend of the graph?
2. What can you say about the graph of the rational function?

“We Do It”
𝑥 −1
Using the table of values of f(x) = 𝑥+1
in the previous lesson, sketch it graph.

“You Do It”
𝑥 2 −3𝑥 − 10
Using the table of values of f(x) = 𝑥
in the previous lesson, sketch it graph.

V. Evaluation
𝑋 −3
Using the table of values of f(x) = in the previous lesson, sketch it graph.
𝑋 −4

VI. Assignment
How to find the domain, range, zeros, and intercepts of functions?
