Using Innovative Materials on the Reading Performance of Pupils: Basis for TUTOK- BASA Enhancement Program

ABSTRACT

This study entitled, USING INNOVATIVE MATERIALS ON THE

READING PERFORMANCE OF PUPILS: BASIS FOR TUTOK-BASA

ENHANCED PROGRAM, is especially designed for struggling readers of Tomas

Morato Elementary School, wherein the researcher is a Grade 2 teacher and

Coordinator of Reading Program. Being very much aware of the importance of

reading, the researcher would like to assist struggling readers to cope with the

lessons and activities of their grade level. It is her top priority to provide an

environment that promotes reading among learners. Reading has evidences in

order to be considered reading. Noting the important details of the selection is

the first skill to be acquired by the readers.

Yearly, the Phil-IRI is being conducted during the first two months – June

to July to identify the reading levels of pupils from grade 2 to grade 6. There is a

selection to be read and out of the 8 questions, a pupil must get 7 in order to pass.

Depending on one’s speed and score in the test, one will be qualified as to

frustration, instructional and independent. Frustration level pupils are the main

focus of this study. They must be helped in order to read grade 6 level selections

and be able to understand the various lessons in the level. A grade 2 to 6 pupil,

specifically in English must be able to show comprehension by analyzing

selections and giving outputs such as book review, character analysis and

summarizing short stories presented by the teacher.

Using Innovative Materials on the Reading Performance of Pupils: Basis for TUTOK- BASA Enhancement Program

This study can serve as an encouragement to other teachers of Filipino in

the public schools, where the percentage of scarcity of reading materials is a bit

high. The researcher would like to share her teaching strategy which was being

used for about a couple of years. The use of worksheets with pictures is of great

help. Each worksheet contains a selection from the grade level, with picture and

in bigger font size than usual. There are at least 5 questions per selection for the

comprehension check-up. There are words that cannot be easily read, so the use

of dictionary is allowed. From one grade level to the next, the pupils experience

to read varied selections, and for each they have to pass the comprehension test

too. At the end of the first semester, they are ready to read grade 2 level

selections. Reading is a tool to learn the other areas of discipline. When a pupil

can read and be able to make connections with the material he’s reading, and can

apply the essence of what he has read that pupil is a reader. The goal to finish

reading with high score and maximum speed is not the only purpose of reading.

A reader must be able to apply what he has read and learned from reading. The

application to daily living and some instances are better measures of reading. It

is the aim of the researcher to make her pupils learn and be able to apply the

lessons and the insights gained from any reading activity and performances in her

class.

Filipino as a subject has Performance as its biggest component, which is

50%. The others are, Written Works 30% and 2o% for the Periodic Test. Given

these components, if a pupil cannot read and understand grade level selections

and the other passages in grade 6, he will not pass any of the tests. The Phil-IRI

is a guide to help the teachers be more aware of the standing of the newly

promoted grade 2, as to whether they need assistance or reinforcement.

Those 280 pupils who took the Post Test; 37 belong to instructional level,

24 to independent, while only 39 are still in the frustration level based on the

comprehension test. However, all 100 pupils belong to instructional level as far

as the Reading Speed is concerned. The instrument is used to measure the

Effectiveness of the Remediation Reading Program in Terms of its; Objectives

whereas; the reading remediation materials are well-prepared, can easily be

understood, and relevant. The learners find them very effective and timely that

contributed much to the acquisition of learning amongst them.

They find the selections relevant and a reader-material connection became

evident and was proven. In terms of Content whereas; the materials established

a good connection with the struggling readers through the use of pictures that

elevate their reading experience. The established routine made reading a real

part of their studies, as progress was being noticed in their scores. The learners

appreciated much the materials for being child-friendly. The remediation

program made a remarkable improvement to the ability of the struggling readers,

for they can already read grade 6 level selections at the end of the first semester.

In terms of the Learning Activities whereas; the teacher manifested commitment

in her duty by providing the learners with appropriate selections. The teacher

kept an organized routine of giving exercises and follow up questions for the

comprehension improvement of the learners.

To better enhance the acquired reading skills, the enhancement program

is being implemented by the teacher-researcher for the continuity of the learning

outcomes. The pupils will become more interested to read and keep track of their

reading achievements too.
