5. A shaft rotating at 200 rpm drives another shaft at 300 rpm and transmits 6 KW through a
belt. The belt is 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The distance between the shafts is 4 m. The
smaller pulley is m in diameter. Calculate the stress in the belt, if it is an open belt drive and

6. A single plate clitch is required to transmit 8 KW at 1000 rpm. The axis pressure is limited
to 70 KN/m2 . The mean radius of the plate is times the radial width of the friction surface. If
both the sides Of the plate are effective. and the co-efficient of friction is 0•25, find (a) The
inner and the outer radius of the plate and the mean radius.

7. A cam is designed for a knife follower with the following data (a) Cam lift = 40 mm during
900 cam rotation with SHM.
(b) Dwell for the next 300.
(c) During the next 600 of cam rotation, the follower returns to original position with SHM.
(d) Dweel for the remaining 1800.
Draw the profile of the cam when the line of stoke is offset 20 mm from the axis of the cam

1. In a crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism, the distance between
the fixed centres O and C is 200 mm, the driving crank Cp is 75 mm long.
The pin Q on the slotter lever 360 mm from the fulcrum O, is connected by
a link QR 100 mm long, to a pin R on the ram. The line of stroke of R is
perpendicular to OC and intersects OC produced at a point 150mm from C.
Determine the ratio of time taken on the cutting and return strokes.
2. In a crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism, the distance between
the fixed centres is 150 mm and the driving the fixed centres is 150 mm
and the driving crank is 75 mm long. Dctcrmine the ratio of the time taken
on the cutting and return strokes.

The crank of a slider crank mechanism rotates clockwise at a constant speed
of 300 rpm. The crank is 125 mm and connecting rod is 600 mm long.
Determine (i) Linear velocity and acceleration of the mid-point of the
connecting rod (ii) Angular velocity and angular acceleration of the
connecting rod, at a crank angle of 45" from inner dead center position.
4. a) Derive thc expression for velocity and acceleration of piston in
reciprocating steam engine mechanism with neat sketch.
b) Derive the expression for Coriolis component of acceleration with neat sketch.

5. An open belt running over two pulleys 240 mm and 600 mm diameter
connects two parallel shafts 3 meters apart and transmits 4 KW from the
smaller pulley that rotates at 300 rpm. Coefficient of friction between the
belt and the pulley is 0.3 and the safe working tension is 10 KN per mm
width. Determine minimum width of the belt, initial belt tension and the
length of the belt required.
6. A shaft has a number of collars integral with it. The external diameter of
the collars is 400 mm and the shaft diameter is 250 mm. If the uniform
intensity of pressure is 0.35 N/mm2 and its coefficient of friction is 0.05,
estimate (i) Power absorbed in overcoming friction when the shaft runs at
105 rpm and carries a load of 150 KN and (ii) Number of collars required.

7. Draw the profile of a Cam operating a roller reciprocating follower and with the
following data: Minimum radius of Cam = 25 mm; Lift 30 mm; Roller diameter
— 15 mm. The Cam lifts the follower for 1200 with SHM, followed by a dwell
period of 30. Then the follower lowers down during 150 0 of Cam rotation with
uniform acceleration and retardation followed by a dwell period. If the Cam
rotates at a uniform speed of 150 RPM. Calculate the maximum velocity and
acceleration of follower during the descent period.
8. Draw the displacement, velocity and acceleration curves, when the follower
moves with simple harmonic motion and derive the expression for
maximum velocity and maximum acceleration.
UNIT - V
9. Two spur gears of 24 teeth and 36 teeth of 8 mm module and 20 degree
pressure angle are in mesh. Addendum of each gear is 7.5 mm. The teeth
are of involute form. Determine the angle through which the pinion turns
while any pair of teeth are in contact and the velocity of sliding between
the teeth when the contact on the pinion is at a radius of 102 mm. The speed
of the pinion is 450 rpm.
10. The arm of an epicyclic gear train rotates at 100 rpm in the anticlockwise
direction. The arm carries two wheels A and B having 36 and 45 teeth
respectively. The wheel A is fixed and the arm rotates about the centre of
wheel A. Find the speed of wheel B. What will be the speed of B, if the
wheel A instead of being fixed. makes 200 rpm (Clockwise)

1 (a) Derive an expression to determine the force extracted by a jet on a stationary curved plate at
the centre. (7)
(b) A cm diameter jet having a velocity of 30 m/s strikes a flat plate, the normal of which

the plate is stationary and when the plate is moving with a velocity of 15 m/s and away from the

2. A penstock supplies water from a reservoir to the Pelton wheel with a gross head of 500 m.
One third of the gross head is lost in friction in the penstock pipe. The rate of flow of water

through the nozzle fitted at the end of the penstock is 2 m/s. The angle of deflection of the
net is, 1650. Determine the power given by the water to the runner and also, hydraulic
efficiency of the Pelton wheel. Take cv = 1 and speed ratio = 0•45.

3. An inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters as 1 •0 m and m
respectively. The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine is 90 % when the head on the turbine is
36 m. The velocity of flow at outler is m/s and discharge at outlet is radial. The vane angle
outlet is 15 0 and width of the wheel is 100 mm at inlet and outlet, determine the guide blade
angle, speed of the turbine, vane angle of the runner at inlet, volume of flow rate of turbine

(b) A centrifugal pump discharges 0-15 m /s of water against a head of 12•5 m, the speed
of the impeller being 600 rpm. The outer and inner diameters of the impeller are 500
mm and 250 mm respectively and the vanes are bent back at 35 0 to the tangent at
exit. If the area of flow remains 0•07 m2 from the inlet to outlet, determine the vane
angle at inlet, manometric efficiency of the' pump and loss of the head at the inlet to
impeller when the discharge is reduced by 40 % without changing the speed. (12)

or into the air vessel when the crank makes an angle of 300, 900 and 1200 with the inner dead
centre. Find the crank angles at which there is no flow into or from the air vessel. (12)

UNIT - 1
l. A shaft fitted with a flywheel rotates at 250 rpm and
drives a machine. The torque of machine varies in a
cyclic manner over a period of 3 revolutions. The torque
rises from 750 N-m to 3000 N-m uniformly during 1/2
revolution and remains constant for the following
revolution. It then falls uniformly to 750 N-m during
the next 1/2 revolution and remains constant for one
revolution, the cycle being repeated thereafter.
Determine the power required driving the machine and
percentage fluctuation in speed, if the driving torque
applied to the shaft is constant and the mass of the
flywheel is 500 kg with radius of wration of 600mm. (15)

2. A punching press is required to punch 40mm diameter


holes in a plate of 15 mm thickness at the rate of 30 holes
per minute. It requires 6 N-m of enerW per mrn2 of sheared
area. If the punching takes 1/ 10 of a second and the rpm
of the flywheel varies from 160 to 140. Determine the mass
of the flywheel having radius of wration of 1 metre. (15)

and 260 kg respectively. The corresponding radii of
rotation are 0.2 m. 0.15m, 0.25 m and 0.3 m respectively

and 135 0 . Find the position and magnitude of the balance
mass required, if its radius of rotation is 0.2 m. (15)
4. A rotating shaft carries four unbalanced masses 18 kg,
14kg, 16 kg and 12 kg at radii 50 mm, 60mm, 7Omm and
60mm respectively. The 2 nd 3 rd and 4th masses revolve in
planes 80 mm, 160 mm and 280 mm respectively measured
from the plane of the first mass and are angularly

clockwise from the first mass looking from this mass end
of the shaft. The shaft is dynamically balanced by two
masses, both located at 50 mm radii and revolving in

the distance between the cylinder center lines being 375mm. the piston stroke is
225 mm and the ratio of the connecting rod to the crank is 4. Examine the engine
for balance of primary and secondary forces and couples. Find the maximum values
of these and the position of the central crank at which these maximum values occur.

6. The following data refer to two cylinder locomotive with cranks at 90 0 :


reciprocating mass per cylinder=300 kg; crank radius =0.3 m; driving wheel
diameter = 1.8 m; distance between cylinder centre lines =0.65 m; distance between
the driving wheel central planes — 1.55 m. determine: 1. The fraction of the
reciprocating masses to be balanced, if the hammer blow is not to exceed 46 N at

Describe the function of the impeller and the diffuser in a
centrifugal compressor. (15)

2. A rotating vane compressor has a free air delivery of


170 litre per min, when it compresses air from 0.98 bar
and 15 0 c to 2,3 bar. Estimate the power required to
drive the compressor, when:
i) The parts are so placed that there is no internal compression.

volume before back low occurs. Assume adiabatic compression

3. A single stage steam turbine has 105 cm diameter rotor running
at 3000 rpm. The Nozzle angle=18 0 . The ratio of blade speed to
steam speed=O.4. The ratio of relative velocity and outlet from
the blades to that at inlet=O.84. The blade outlet angle is less
by 3 0 blade inlet angle. Draw the velocity diagram and find the
following when steam flow = 10kg/ sec. a) Tangential thrust on
the blades, b) Axial thrust on the blades, c) resultant thrust
