UNIT -1
I The Whitworth quick return motion mechanism has the driving crank 150 mm long. The
distance between fixed centres is 100 mm. The line of stroke of the ram passes through the
centre of rotation of the slotted lever whose free end is connected to the ram by a connecting
link.
Find the ratio of time of cutting to time of return. (15)

3. In a four link mechanism, the dimensions of the links are AB 200 mm, BC = 400 mm, CD = 450
mm and AD = 600 mm. At the instant when DAB = 900, the link AB has angular velocity of 36
rad/s in the clockwise direction. Determine
(a) The velocity of point C.
(b) The velocity of point E on the link BC when BE = 200 mm.
5. A shaft rotating at 200 rpm drives another shaft at 300 rpm and transmits 6 KW through a
belt. The belt is 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The distance between the shafts is 4 m. The
smaller pulley is m in diameter. Calculate the stress in the belt, if it is an open belt drive and
a cross belt drive. Take 0•3. (15) (OR)
6. A single plate clitch is required to transmit 8 KW at 1000 rpm. The axis pressure is limited
to 70 KN/m2 . The mean radius of the plate is times the radial width of the friction surface. If
both the sides Of the plate are effective. and the co-efficient of friction is 0•25, find (a) The
inner and the outer radius of the plate and the mean radius.

7. A cam is designed for a knife follower with the following data (a) Cam lift = 40 mm during
900 cam rotation with SHM.
(b) Dwell for the next 300.
(c) During the next 600 of cam rotation, the follower returns to original position with SHM.
(d) Dweel for the remaining 1800.
Draw the profile of the cam when the line of stoke is offset 20 mm from the axis of the cam

8. Classify with neat sketches, the cam follower according to their shape, location and motion.

UNIT - IV
7. Draw the profile of a Cam operating a roller reciprocating follower and with the
following data: Minimum radius of Cam = 25 mm; Lift 30 mm; Roller diameter
— 15 mm. The Cam lifts the follower for 1200 with SHM, followed by a dwell
period of 30. Then the follower lowers down during 150 0 of Cam rotation with
uniform acceleration and retardation followed by a dwell period. If the Cam
rotates at a uniform speed of 150 RPM. Calculate the maximum velocity and
acceleration of follower during the descent period.
8. Draw the displacement, velocity and acceleration curves, when the follower
moves with simple harmonic motion and derive the expression for
maximum velocity and maximum acceleration.

9. Two spur gears of 24 teeth and 36 teeth of 8 mm module and 20 degree
pressure angle are in mesh. Addendum of each gear is 7.5 mm. The teeth
are of involute form. Determine the angle through which the pinion turns
while any pair of teeth are in contact and the velocity of sliding between
the teeth when the contact on the pinion is at a radius of 102 mm. The speed
of the pinion is 450 rpm.
10. The arm of an epicyclic gear train rotates at 100 rpm in the anticlockwise
direction. The arm carries two wheels A and B having 36 and 45 teeth
respectively. The wheel A is fixed and the arm rotates about the centre of
wheel A. Find the speed of wheel B. What will be the speed of B, if the
wheel A instead of being fixed. makes 200 rpm (Clockwise)

respectively. The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine is 90 % when the head on the turbine is
36 m. The velocity of flow at outler is m/s and discharge at outlet is radial. The vane angle
outlet is 15 0 and width of the wheel is 100 mm at inlet and outlet, determine the guide blade
angle, speed of the turbine, vane angle of the runner at inlet, volume of flow rate of turbine

(b) A double acting reciprocating pump runs at 120 rpm. When its suction pipe of 100 mm
diameter is fitted with an air vessel on its suction side. The diameter of cylinder and stroke are
150 mm and 450 mm respectively. If piston is to be driven with SHM, find the rate of flow from
or into the air vessel when the crank makes an angle of 300, 900 and 1200 with the inner dead
centre. Find the crank angles at which there is no flow into or from the air vessel. (12)

I Design a jõurnal to support a load of 5000 N at 720 rpm. Using a hardened steelJournal and a
bronze backed Babbitt bearing. The bearing is lubricated by oil rings. Room temperature is

9. Design a gear drive to give 18 speeds for a spindle of a milling machine. The drive is from
an electric motor of 3•75 kW at 1440 rpm-maximum and minimum speeds of the spindle are

UNIT - 1
l. A shaft fitted with a flywheel rotates at 250 rpm and
drives a machine. The torque of machine varies in a
cyclic manner over a period of 3 revolutions. The torque
rises from 750 N-m to 3000 N-m uniformly during 1/2
revolution and remains constant for the following
revolution. It then falls uniformly to 750 N-m during
the next 1/2 revolution and remains constant for one
revolution, the cycle being repeated thereafter.
Determine the power required driving the machine and
percentage fluctuation in speed, if the driving torque
applied to the shaft is constant and the mass of the
flywheel is 500 kg with radius of wration of 600mm. (15)

7. A cantilever shaft 50 mm diameter and 300 mm long has a disc of mass
100 kg at its free end. The young modulus for the shaft material is 200

l. A Pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 10 meters
per second with a jet of water flowing at the rate
of 700 litres/s under a head of 30 meters. The

Calculate the power given by water to the runner and
the hydraulic efficiency of the turbine. Assume co-
efficient of velocity as 0.98.

velocity of whirl is zero at outlet, determine: i)
