The cinema of India consists of films produced in the nation of India. India has one of the
oldest and largest film industries in the world with as many as 1,600 films produced in
more than 20 languages every year. It was in early 1913 that an Indian film received a
public screening. The film was Raja Harischandra, directed by Dadasahab Phalke.

The Indian film industry reached overall revenues of $1.86 billion (₹93 billion) in 2011. In
2012, India produced 1,602 feature films. As of 2013, India ranked first in terms of annual
film output, followed by Nollywood, Hollywood and China.

In 2015, India had a total box office gross of US$2.1 billion, third largest in the world.
Films are made in many cities and regions in India including Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat,
Haryana, Jammu, Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Konkan (Goa), Kerala, Maharashtra,
Manipur, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
These films , individually, are called Regional films of India.

OBJECTIVE:
To promote regional films in India which are neglected due
to immense success of hindi film industry.

CRITERIA OF SELECTION:
The film industry has been earmarked as a key sector in the Make in India campaign. As
part of this, the Government of India is taking several initiatives to effect growth in the
sector as well as promote foreign film shootings locally.

PROJECT CHALLENGES:
a) To develop an interest among people for regional films of India
b) To create various expiriential as well as interactive spaces for the users
c) Developing spaces which could be used for film shooting as well as for other
recreational activities.

AIM:
Regional film industries all over the country gets required recognition, opportunities and
infrastructure for better development of the sector and increased contributioNto make
India, a largest film producing country in the world.

PRE-DESIGN STUDIES:

Some of the spaces to be developed in the project are:


1.) MINI THEATRES:
For screening of regional movies, movies participating in film festivals held by stakeholders,
general feature films etc. to maintain footfall in the project.

2.) FILM STUDIOS:


For shooting of films which would also offer accomodation spaces for the actors, directors
and crew.

3.) FILM LIBRARY:


The basic aim of the Library is to bring the regional cinemas under one roof to ensure
promotion, preservation and conservation of films of all regions and of all genres, and to
work as a catalyst for cultural exchange between different regions.

4.) MOCK-UPS:
To depict, recreate the essence of the films made in a particular region by props and
architectural elements used in the films.

5.) FILM INSTITUTE:


To spread knowledge about film studies and practical expiriences regarding films.

SITE SELECTION:
Jaipur has been named World Hertage site by UNESCO in July,2019. It is likely to attract
much tourist from all over the world. Also, an organization of films, Jaipur International Film
Festival (JIFF), is aimed at developing Jaipur as a cinema capital and state of Rajasthan
as a Film Archive for the world cinemas.

Films Development centre is important to encourage regional film of India among the
local citizens, hence challenge is about linguistic diversity, socio-cultural practices of
people from different regions. A government proposed project is to be developed on
public private partnership basis as a studio-cum-entertainment destination near Sumel
Village, on Jaipur-Agra Highway.

SITE LOCATION:
The proposed site for film development centre is alloted for the same function and has
also been proposed in master development plan 2025 Jaipur Region.

The project falls under Special category according to land use, also, it is the proposed site
for similar function and activites, thus this is the suitable site proposed for the regional films
development centre.

SUMEL
Sumel village is located in Jaipur Tehsil of Jaipur district in Rajasthan, India. It is situated
15km away from Jaipur, which is both district & sub-district headquarter of Sumel village.

CLIMATE: SEMI ARID, WITH LONG EXTREMELY HOT SUMMERS AND MILD WINTERS.

MAX. TEMPERTAURE: 47 DEGREES IN SUMMERS

MIN. TEMPERATURE : 5 DEGREES IN WINTERS

ANNUAL RAINFALL: 635mm, MAXIMUM IN MONTH OF JULY.

NEARBY PLACES:
The site is locatedin the outskirts of the city, in village namely Sumel, with very low
population and settlements around it.

The site is located parallel to Kanota Dam, near the Jaipur-Agra Highway and also
neighbouring an instituional building.

Site is located very close to a river, which makes it vulnerable to floods.

The site was earlier used for an amusement park, namely, Fun Kingdom. The site
surroundings include:

Site Vulnerability: Located near soil erosion prone area, neighbouring transit oriented
development.

BY LAWS:

1. For such projects,

Maximum Land Acquisition allowed is 10% of total site area.


Minimum setbacks to be left are:
REAR: 9 METERS
SIDES: 9 METERS

There is no specified limit for height of the structures, no B.A.R is specified for such kinds of
projects.

Road width of 18 meters is minimum required for site of such type of projects.

It is mandatory to plant a tree with minimum foilage of 6 meters in average area of every
100 sq. m on the site.

The height of the compound walls for corner plot will be limited to 0.75 meters for length
of 5 meters on front and side ends and the required height can be fulfilled by putting up
steel railings.

Minimum width of the stairs and corridors in the premises will be 1.5 meters.

Parking standards for such proejcts are laid out as 1 E.C.U per 500 sq. m area.
Out of total parking area, 75% will be allotted to four-wheelers and buses, while 25% will
be allotted to two-wheelers.

Mandatory Area alotted to vehicles are as follows:


FOUR WHEELER: 2.5 METERS X 5.0 METERS
TWO WHEELER: 1.0 METER X 2.0 METERS

Ramp width for same entry and exit points of four wheelers having parking space on both
sides should be minimum 5.5 meters and for having parking on either sides and separate
entry/exit points, minimum 3.50 meters of width is required. Also, slope should be in 1:8
ratio.

CASE 1: KINGDOM OF DREAMS, GURGAON

CURRENT USE: LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, SHOWS etc.

The design accommodates showcase of various cultures thorough different exhibits and
pavilions representing various regions, culture, heritage, architecture, cuisines etc. under
one roof.

CASE 2: AHMEDABAD FILM STUDIO, AHMEDABAD

CURRENT USE: FILM SHOOTING, ACCOMODATION

The design offers location for shooting of a film along with spaces designed for stay of the
whole crew of the film.

CASE 3: SHANGHAI FILMS MUSEUM, CHINA

ARCHITECT: Tilman Thürmer

YEAR OF COMPLETION: 2010

CURRENT USE: FILMS MUSEUM.

The design functions as museum for the Shanghai Film Industry glorifying its achievements
and famous personalities along with various experiential spaces for the visitors.

CASE 4 : GERMAN FILMS INSTITUTE AND


MUSEUM

,FRANKFURT, GERMANY.

YEAR OF COMPLETION: 2011

CURRENT USE: MUSEUM, INSTITUTE, LIBRARY

The design accommodates interactive practices which includes museum and regular
hosted events for film encouragement. It also offers various institutional programs held for
students and professionals interested in film making.

CASE 5: FRENCH FILM LIBRARY, PARIS

ARCHITECT: Jean-Louis Pascal

YEAR OF COMPLETION: 2010

CURRENT USE: FILM ARCHIVE

The design functions as an archive for french and other films from all over the world and is
accessible on permissions to anyone interested in films.
