Subject: Science Class: --VIII

Q.1 Choose the correct option:

1.Complete the sentence. Friction always ____________

a. helps the motion
b. opposes the motion
c. both of these
d. none of these
2. Which one of these characteristics does a smooth surface has?
a. Less frictional force
b. More frictional force
c. Sometimes less and sometimes more force
d. All of above
3. Friction is a __________
a. Contact force
b. Non-contact force
c. Magnetic force
d. None of these
4. What kind of substances are known as lubricants
a. Increase friction
b. Decrease friction
c. Increase or decrease friction
d. None of these
5. Fluid are____
a. Gases
b. Liquids
c. Gases and liquids both
d. None of these
6. On what force of friction depends?
a. Smoothness of surface
b. Roughness of surface
c. Inclination of surface
d. all of above
7. Friction is a /an_______
a. Evil
b. Foe
c. Both (a) and (b)
d. None
8. Lubricants ________
a. Increase friction
b. Reduce friction
c. Both (a) and (b)
d. None
9. Rolling friction is smaller than?
a. Sliding friction
b. Static friction
c. Fluid friction
d. All of the above
10. The shape of the airplane is like a
a. Bird
b. Car
c. Dog
d. All

2. Name any two common lubricants.

- oil
-grease

3. Name a variable that does not have any effect on the frictional force.

4. What is a drag?

5. Name two natural and two man-made bodies that have streamlined shape.
Natural
-bird
-fish
Man-made
-aeroplane
-boat

6. Give two activities from our daily lives to exemplify when friction is desired and two for
when friction is not desired.
Friction is desired:
-For writing
-for rubbing
Friction is not desired
-lifting a heavy thing
-sliding on slides
7. How does a lubricant help in reducing friction?
. When Lubricants are applied ,it fills the irregularities and make the surface smooth and regular . This is how
Lubricants help in reducing friction .
8. What are the factors that determine the magnitude of friction between two surfaces?

9. Briefly explain the concept of fluid friction with the help of a suitable example.
When a streamlined object travels in a fluid (can be a liquid or gas) its edges cut the fluid which increases its
speed. For example a boat ,we always see a boat to be in a streamlined shape ,neither in square nor circular. It is
because it is the only shape which helps in travelling at a great speed in fluid i.e. the sky. Similarly we can take
example of an aeroplane, a bird or a fish.

10. What are ball bearings? Where and why are they used?
A ball bearing is a bearing that is used in vehicles such as cars etc. to reduce the rolling friction between the
wheels of the car and the road.

11. Pick the odd one out of the following.

a. Bird, airplane, truck
b. Grease, water, oil
12. Discuss the relationship between the size and weight of an object and the friction that
it generates.
If a body has its shape as streamlined and the size of an object is comparatively smaller ,then less friction will be
applied on it.

13. How does the force of friction cause things to heat up?
When two things rub against each other ,frictional force is created which generates heat.

14. How does the streamlined shape of an aeroplane help in the reduction of the fuel
consumption of the same?

15. Why brake pads are used in automobiles?

16. Why is powder sprinkled on the carom board before starting a game?

17. Why does one use soap in order to remove a tight ring from the finger?

18. Explain why bicycles are easier to pedal when their tires are fully pumped up with air.
Science Class: 8
19. What is sliding friction? Give some examples which show that sliding friction is beneficial
to us.

20. How can friction be reduced and increased?

21. Explain the fact that when two things rub together, friction takes energy of motion and converts it to heat with
the help of an example.

22. With the help of a suitable graphic organizer, illustrate the significance of friction in our lives.

23. With the help of a suitable graphic organizer, illustrate the different types of friction.

24. An apple is falling down from a branch. Sketch and label the forces that pull the apple
down and the forces that slow the apple down.

25. We know that forces are characterised by their strength and direction.
Discuss the factors on which the strength of the frictional force depends on.

26. The game of cricket involves running, stopping, jumping, kicking, etc.
Discuss how friction helps the players in these activities.
