Specification of Fire Rated Doors

1. Scope
This specification covers sizes, materials, general construction requirements and finishing of fire
rated steel doors and frames.
2. Sizes:
Doors are provided in sizes as per client requirement. The standard single leaf door sizes
ranges from 2′0″ to 4′0″ in width and from 6′8″ to 10′0″ in height. Double leaf door size
ranges from 4’ to 8’ in width and 6’-8” to 10’ in height.

3. Fire Rating.
The door is able to withstand fire for a period of 120 minutes, when tested in accordance with
EN 1634-1 / BS 476 part 20 and BS 476-part 22.
4. Materials
4.1.Steel Specification:
Commercial Quality hot dipped zinc coated steel shall comply with ASTM A924,
Standard Specification for General Requirements for Steel Sheet, Metallic Coated by the
Hot-Dip Process and A653, Standard Specification for Steel Sheet, Zinc Coated
(Galvanized) or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated (Galvannealed) by the Hot-Dip Process. The
coating weight shall meet or exceed the minimum requirements for coatings having 0.4
oz/ft² (120 g/m²), total both sides, i.e., G40 (Z120).
4.2.Core Material:
Doors leaf is reinforced with vertical stiffeners, securely laminated to each face
sheet. All voids between stiffeners is filled with honeycomb Kraft Paper.
4.3.Adhesives:
Door leaf faces are glued with core material by MPU-20 Type Single Component Poly-
Urethane Glue.
5. Door Leaf Construction:
Each door face is formed from a single sheet of steel. Door leaf is mechanically
interlocked, hemmed, hairline seam on vertical edges and have no visible seams on faces. The
edges of the door are square i.e. 900 to the face of the door.
The top and bottom of the door is closed with inverted U channels. Doors is reinforced with
vertical stiffeners, securely laminated to each face sheet. All voids between stiffeners is filled
with honeycomb Kraft Paper core. Door leaf is 42mm ± 3mm thick. The detail constructional
specification of different components of door leaf is given below.
1.1. Door Leaf Faces:
Material: GI Steel Sheet (G-40, G-60)
Thickness: 1.2mm
Fixing: Mechanically Lock seam and pressed with adhesive against each other.
1.2. Door Leaf Stiffeners: (Where Required)
Material: GI Steel Sheet (G-40, G-60)
Thickness: 1.0 mm
Overall Size: U Channel 20mmx40mm,
Fixing: Welded
Frequency: Two along vertical axis of Leaf.
1.3. Top Channel:
Material: GI Steel Sheet (G-40, G-60)
Thickness: 1.0 mm
Overall size: U Channel 20mm x 40mm,
Fixing: Spot or tack Welded
1.4. Closer Reinforcement:
Material: GI Steel Sheet (G-40, G-60)
Thickness: 1.2 mm
Fixing: Spot-welded to Leaf or with adhesives
1.5. Bottom Channel:
Material: GI Steel Sheet (G-40, G-60)
Thickness: 1.0 mm
Overall Size: U Channel 20mm x 40mm.
Fixing: Spot or tack Welded
1.6. Core:
The Core is filled with impregnated Honey Comb Kraft paper of Hexagonal Cell, Cell
size 25mm and 145gram/Cubic meter density.
1.7. Leaf Dimension
Leaf Thickness: 42mm
Leaf width: 1220 mm (Max)
 Leaf Height: 2500 mm (Max)

6. Door Frame:
All frames are welded type. The frame is made of 1.2mm thick roll formed
galvanize steel sheet. Frame elements are securely arc welded on the inside of the profile.
Welded joints is ground to a smooth and uniform finish. Frames is provided with a temporary
spreader bar for shipping and handling purpose only. This temporary spreader bar is removed
and a setting spreader is used for installation of the frames.
Frames is blanked, reinforced, drilled and tapped for mortised, templated hardware.
Frames is reinforced, where required, for surface mounted hardware.
The frame is provided with appropriate anchorage to wall construction. Each wall
anchor is located immediately above or below each hinge reinforcement on the hinge jamb
and directly opposite on the strike jamb. For rebate opening heights up to and including 60"
(1524mm) provide two (2) anchors, and an additional anchor for each additional 30"
(762mm) of height. Wall anchors is securely attached to the inside of each jamb profile. The
detail constructional specification of frame is given below.

7. Vision Panel: (Optional)
A vision panel of size 10”x10” (254mm x 254mm) is provided where required, fixed with
glazing beads. The vision panel is provided with suitable fire rated glass.

8. Hardware:
8.1. Self-Closing Devices:
The door is provided with a suitable self-closing device.
8.2. Hinges:
The door is provided with stainless steel ball bearing type hinges. Hinges are located
as, Door upto and including 7′6″ high require two hinges at 8 inches from the top of
leaf and one hinge at 8 inches from the bottom of leaf. Door over 7′6″ require an
additional hinge at the center. Hinges is fixed with counter sunk screws.
8.3. Lock and Latches: (Optional)
The door is provided with suitable fire rated lock.
8.4. Panic Bar. (Optional)
The door is provided with suitable fire rated panic bar where required.

9. Factory applied finish paint:

Doors and frames is thoroughly cleaned and chemically treated to ensure paint adhesion.
All surfaces of the door and frame exposed to view receive a factory applied finish painting.
