CADCAM

INTRODUCTION

The definition of CAD/CAM is a short term of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and


Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). The term CAD/NC (Numerical Control) is equivalent
in some industries. CAD/CAM software uses CAD drawing tools to describe geometries used
by the CAM portion of the program to define a tool path that will direct the motion of a machine
tool to machine the exact shape that was drawn.

OBJECTIVES

a. To obtain knowledge on how to draw using CATIA software as computer aided design.
b. To obtain knowledge on how to CNC generate programming using CATIA software as
computer aided manufacturing.

THEORY

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

CAD is the process of utilizing computers to create and edit design models and drawings.
CAD systems are powerful tools and are used in the design and geometric modeling of
components and products. Drawings are generated as workstations and the design is displayed
on the monitor. Designer can conceptualize the part to be designed on the graphics screen and
can modify particular design to meet specific design requirements.

CAD Technology is faster than conventional methods, easy to develop the model and
associated drafting, possible to manipulate various dimension, attributes and distance of
drawing, accurately calculate the geometric properties, easy to modify a model, use of standard
components (part libraries) and provide 3D (three dimensional) visualization. Existing CAD
software available in the market is AutoCAD, Pro Engineer, Solid Works, CATIA, Unigraphics
and I-DEAS.
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)

Computer -aided manufacturing (CAM) is the use of computer-based software tools that
assist engineers and machinists in manufacturing or prototyping product components and
tooling. Its primary purpose is to create a faster production process and components and tooling
with more precise dimensions and material consistency, which in some case, uses only the
required amount of raw material (thus minimizing waste), while simultaneously reducing
energy consumption. CAM is a programming tool that makes it possible to manufacture
physical model using computer-aided design (CAD) programs. CAM creates real life versions
of components designed within a software package. CAM was first used in 1971 for car body
design and tooling.

The 10 largest CAM software products and companies, by end-user payments in year
2008 are, sorted alphabetically:

 Cimatron from Cimatron Group
 Edgecam from Planit, formerly Pathtrace
 Mastercam from CNC Software
 NX, formerly Unigraphics, from Siemens PLM Software
 Powermill from Delcam
 Pro/E from PTC

Safety and Health

 Do not bring foods and drinks into the lab


 Students are not allowed into the lab without any permissions from lecturer
 Do not bring out any item or software from the lab
 Do not disturb the wiring of the computer
 If anything, odd or weird behavior happen with the computer, report it to lecturer as
soon as possible.
 Do not vandalize the computer.
 Do not make any noises.
 Do not change any settings of the computer.
 User must record their name into a log book.
PROCEDURES

DRAWING AND GENERATE THE NC CODE FOR MILLING MACHINING:

Model that need to be drawn and units are in inches

CAD procedures:

1. To create a 2D sketch, click the toolbar Start>Mechanical Design>Part Design


2. Click the xy plane at left top corner and click Sketch icon
3. Create a rectangle by clicking icon Rectangle and draw on the plane. To make a precise
measurement click Constraint and make the adjustment based on the diagram given.
4. Click Exit workbench to exit the sketch mode. In order to extrude the rectangle, click
Pad and enter the overall height then click OK.
5. Click the top of the rectangle and choose the Sketch icon to begin the sketch.
6. Create a reference line to make a design based on the model given. Make sure the line are
close. Trim line that are not needed. Click Quick Trim to trim

7. Exit the workbench and click Pocket to cut the triangle shape.
8. Repeat step no. 5-7 until get the shape in the figure below.
9. To cut a part of model, do rectangle and enter the value. Then exit workbench and do Pocket.

10. Repeat step no.9

11. To create chamfer, click Chamfer . Choose the edge that need to be chamfer and the
enter the value of length and angle. Then click OK.

12. Save the part by clicking File>Save Management>Save As>Save


13. To create a stock for CAM, repeat the steps no.2-4 . Then make it a bit transparent by right-
click PartBody>Properties>Graphic>Transparency

14. Save As Management the stock.


15. To assembly both part and stock, click Start>Mechanical Design>Assembly Design
16. Insert the part by clicking Insert>Existing Component>Product>Part
17. Then insert the stock by clicking Insert>Existing Component With
Positioning>Product>Stock
18. Align and fix component between part and stock. Make sure both of it are fit together. Then
Save As Management (Product)
CAM procedures:

1. To create a machining, click Start>Machining>Prismatic Machining


2. Begin machining setup by double-clicking Part Operation 1 at top left corner until pop up
appear.

3. Click Machine . At Tooling set Tools catalog to MillAndDrillStarterSet. Then at


Numerical Control set the Post Processor words table to CPOST_MILL.pptable and click OK.
4. Click Product or Part and choose Product then open.
5. Click to set a suitable reference line for machining.

6. Click to select the part in the product.


7. Click to select the stock in the product.
8. After all the setup click OK.
9. Click Power Machining and double-click the product. For Rough stock, click the stock
and Part click the part.

10. Then do replay the tool path.


11. For facing click Facing for facing process. Choose face that look rough and face it.
12. To generate NC code click . Set NC data type to NC code.

13. At toolbar NC Code, change the Post-processor to fanuc15i and generate the code by clicking
Execute.
14. All the NC code will be saved in the file that been located when setting up.

DRAWING AND GENERATE THE NC CODE FOR LATHE MACHINING:

Model that need to be drawn and units are in inches

CAD procedures:

1. To create a 2D sketch, click the toolbar Start>Mechanical Design>Part Design


2. Click the xy plane at left top corner and click Sketch icon
3. Draw the model but only half of it.

4. Exit the workbench and click icon Shaft . Then click the longest line on the sketch. Thus
the sketch will form in revolve state.

5. Save as management
6. Create a stock for the part. Then change the transparency by right-click
PartBody>Properties>Graphic>Transparency and save as management.

7. Create a geometry by drawing same as step no.3 but without line 2.5 inch and 4.6 inch. Save
as management.

8. To assembly part, geometry and stock, click Start>Mechanical Design>Assembly Design


9. Insert the part by clicking Insert>Existing Component>Product>Part
10. Then insert the stock by clicking Insert>Existing Component With
Positioning>Product>Stock
11. Align and fix component between part and stock. Make sure both of it are fit together.
12. Insert the geometry by clicking Insert>Existing Component With
Positioning>Product>Geometry
13. After all are aligned, save as management (product)

CAM procedures:

1. To create a machining, click Start>Machining>Lathe Machining


2. Begin machining setup by double-clicking Part Operation 1 at top left corner until pop up
appear.

3. Click Machine At Tooling set Tools catalog to LatheInsertsAndHoldersSample.


Then at Numerical Control set the Post Processor words table to CPOST_LATHE.pptable
and click OK.
4. Click Product or Part and choose Product then open.
5. Click to set a suitable reference line for machining.
6. Click to select the part in the product.
7. Click to select the stock in the product
8. After all the setup click OK.
9. Click Rough Turning Operation and double-click the product. For the Part
Element click along the geometry and for the Stock Element click the front circle of the
stock. Then run the tool path replay.
10. For finishing turning process, click Profile Finish Turning operation. For path
element, click along the geometry. Then run replay tool path. Then OK.

11. To groove click Groove Finish Turning operation. For part element, click the axis
that need to be groove.

12. To generate NC code click . Set NC data type to NC code.


13. At toolbar NC Code, change the Post-processor to fanuc15i and generate the code by
clicking Execute.
14. All the NC code will be saved in the file that been located when setting up
