Reflection

Our group decided to choose the Human Body Parts as a unit topic for 2nd grade students.
We chose it because learning human body parts is a fundamental step to learning English, or any
language for that matter, as they carry considerable utility as we often refer to them in daily life.

The ASSURE step we had trouble the most with for the unit plan was the Analyze learners
step. We were uncertain if 2nd grade students would be able to use the technology and programs we
have mentioned in our lesson plans (like Kahoot and Piktochart). However, we came to the
conclusion that 2nd graders today were born surrounded by technology, and in our own observations
of children of this age in Turkey, most already know (or can learn) how to use software of that level
by the time they are in 2nd grade. As for lesson plans, the Select Strategies, Technology, Media, and
Materials step was challenging, as we had to think of what methods of teaching would best work for
the age group of 2nd grade students. At their age, they are not very disciplined, are energetic, and
don’t have too much prior knowledge – so we had to choose our methods to cater to these
conditions.

We looked at the national curriculum to determine the prerequisite competency level of the
children needed for this unit, deciding that it is A2. We decided to divide the unit into three lessons,
and allocated two hours for each lesson (making total time six lesson hours, with one lesson hour
being forty minutes). We did it to give students adequate amount of time to learn the subject
without being under too much pressure from lesson pacing. The objectives were determined and
written according to the demands of the national curriculum. The instructional methods, media and
materials were chosen to better suit our audience (their age, mental capacity, and knowledge level),
as well as the topic at hand to fill a particular need (like using Prezi for the last lesson for an overview
of the unit, Kahoot for testing, and Powtoon, Prezi, Piktochart, Infographic and Concept map for
presenting). We used an eclectic approach, integrating several approaches (like Presentation, Games,
Grammar Translation Method, Audio-lingual Method, Direct Method, Total Physical Response
Method) and using them depending on the context, like the lesson topic and activities. This also
introduced variety in our lessons, which is important for maintaining the attention of the 2nd grade
students. As stated previously, we used Prezi for the last lesson for an overview of the unit, Kahoot
for testing, and Powtoon, Prezi, Piktochart, Infographic and Concept map for presenting. We also
arranged activities and games, like showing and naming body parts and drawing them, as these are
fun ways to get students to participate in the learning process. These tools fit the teaching methods
mentioned previously. The students were expected to participate by paying attention in class and
observing what is being taught, as well as participating in the games and activities mentioned earlier.
As for evaluation, we used Kahoot quizzes for their simplicity and entertainment value. In-class
observations of students’ performance and behavior were also chosen for evaluation purposes, as
the teacher can see and hear if the students pronounce the words correctly, take note, and correct
them if necessary. Students also participate in Q&A activities, where they get to practice using their
newly gained knowledge.
