So class do you know what is the formula of quadratic equation?

X=-b +- b2  4ac
2a
So class what do you think our topic for today ?

Our topic for today is the sum and the product of roots of a quadratic equation.

Ax2+bx+c=0 can be determined using the coefficient a,b, and c.

The expression b2-4ac is called discriminant of the quadratic equation. It can be describe the nature
of the roots of a quadratic equation. It can be zero, positive and perfect square, positive but not perfect
square, or negative.

For example, describe the roots of x2-4x+4 (the students will answer the equation)

For finding the roots of a quadratic equation use the quadratic formula.

From quadratic formula, lets use x1= -b+ b2  4ac

2a and x2= -b+ b2  4ac

2a be the roots.
For finding the sum of roots of quadratic equation.

X1+x2=-b/a and for finding the product of root of quadratic equation x1.x2=c/a.

Who among you can solve how did it get the formula for getting the formula of the sum of
quadratic equation? And the product?

For extracting the roots of sum and product of quadratic equation.

SUM:

 b  b2  4ac  b  b2  4ac
X1+x2= 2a + 2a

By adding the two formulas will find first the LCD is 2a then combine the same values

X1+x2= -b-b+sqrt. Of b2-4ac-sqrt.of b2-4C/2A

= -B-B=-2B/2A the remaining equation will be canceled because it has opposite sign.

=-b/a

PRODUCT:

X1*x2= (-b+sqrt. Of b2-4ac/2a)(-b-sqrt. Of b2-4ac/2a) combine the same values.

= -b(-b)+(sqrt. Of b2-4ac)(-sqrt. Of b2-4ac)/2a(2a)

= (-b)2-(sqrt.of b2-4ac)/4a2

= b2-b2+4ac/4a2

= c/a

Example #1:

Find the sum and the product of the roots of 2x2-8x-10=0.

The values a,b and c in the equation as a=2 b=-8 c=-10, respectively.

Sum of the roots =-b/a

= -(-8)/2= 4

Product of the roots = c/a

= -10/2 = -5

Example #2:

Find the roots of quadratic equation x2+7x-18=0

(the students will answer the equation)

Again what is the formula for getting the sum of quadratic equation? How about of finding the product?

How about if the given are the roots?

Example:

Who can answer this?

The roots: 5 and 12

X=5 and x=12

(X-5)(x-12)

X2-17x+60

Shortcut:

X1+x2=5+15=17 -b/a = -17

X2.x1=12*5= 60 c/a = 60

= x2-17x+60

I.GENERALIZATION

1. What is the formula for getting the value of sum of a quadratic equation?

2. How about the product?
