WORKING NEW SKILLS
POONAMPREET KAUR
Poonampreet knows that being a top-notch computer programmer means keeping up
with the latest developments in the field. Since she first became interested in coding as a
high school student in India, she has worked hard to improve her fluency in the language
of computers. Now, having come to Douglas as an international student, she is well on
her way toward a fulfilling career in IT.
“My dream is to become a professional programmer,” she says. “The courses I’m taking
are helping me gain the skills and knowledge I need to get there.” Poonampreet is also
gaining valuable practical experience through the Co-operative Education program. In
her co-op placement with the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch, she is using her talents to
help the organization achieve its business goals. “Programming is a challenging field, but
there’s nothing else I’d rather do,” she says.

1. Bachelor degree with an average minimum score 60% or equivalent
2. English language proficiency requirement*

All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency by providing ONE of

the following:
• TOEFL - Minimum score 83 IBT (minimum 20 in all sections) (Douglas College’s
institutional code is 9568)
• IELTS - Minimum overall band test score of 6.5 (no band below 6.0) (Academic
Module only)
• International Baccalaureate (IB) English Language A (Standard Level) - Minimum
grade of 3 or C
• Proof of undergraduate (bachelor) degree from a post-secondary institution
where English is the language of instruction (in a country where English is the
official language)
• Completion of Pathways Program or Douglas College English Language Learning
and Acquisition coursework at level ELLA 0360 or ELLA 0460
