The word “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” in greek holds many meanings. These meanings include: to socialize,
communicate, commune. One of its meanings holds great religious significance: The Eucharist
(/ˈjuːkərɪst/; also called Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper, among other names) is a Christian rite.
According to the New Testament, the rite was instituted by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper; giving
his disciples bread and wine during the Passover meal, Jesus commanded his followers to "do this in
memory of me" while referring to the bread as "my body" and the cup of wine as "the new covenant
in my blood". The term Communion is derived from Latin communio ("sharing in common"), which
translates in Greek κοινωνία (koinōnía)-> and thus the verb “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” .
In addition to the religious significance of the word ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ, we need to emphasize the concepts
it generates, the concepts of cooperation, collectivity, participation, supply, sharing, but also the
Activities: archive.kinono.gr
dynamics the word encapsules. These concepts “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” hopes to integrate and channel
through its events (gatherings).

“ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” Tinos Art Gathering
The “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” Tinos Art Gathering (from now on referred to as “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ”, pronounced KINONO) is a multidimensional cultural organization
created in 2016 and based throughout the island of Tinos, organizing year-round cultural, research and social environmental activities and
activities in the natural and cultural landscape of the island. It is an venture aimed at the communication and direct contact between the creator,
the environment and the "other". A key communication that engages contemporary art with a wider audience, tradition, the various interesting
personalities of the island with its participants, the natural environment by creating, with the aim of revitalizing, through the relationship of man
with the process of “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ”.
“ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” intends to create ever-evolving organic spaces in Tinos, through the interaction of participants with the land and with diverse
audiences. Because “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ”’s ultimate goal is to build a world where things are increasingly and more intricately connected with each other.
Perhaps this effort will contribute to the development of direct relationships and actions that will bring about a culture capable of revitalizing
human relationships, our relationship with the environment, art, society, making our own decision and taking responsibility to communisize (both
communicate and socialize) in the now-today.

(Natura).

Tinos is located in the northern part of the Cyclades cluster and is the third
largest island along with Paros with an area of 195 sq. Km.
Introduction
Tinos in the shape of a pear has a strongly "lacy" coastline, reaching 114 km. It is
distinguished by successive heights and hills that run parallel to the island and
separate it to the south and north. Geologically the island consists mainly of
slates, followed by phyllites, ophiolites, granites, marbles and gneisses. It has
many mountains not high, with the highest peak at Tsiknias to the east at 729
meters high, where according to Greek mythology, the palace of Aeolus, the The winters are mild and the summers are cool and
god of the winds. A little lower, at 640 m, the rock of Xombourgo, where Borgo very windy, mainly north winds during the meltemi
was the capital during the Venetian occupation. Tinos is also known for its many season. The sunshine is high throughout the year
caves, most notably Gastria, Dracolaka and Panormos. The trails and semi-trails and for this reason the thermometer in winter rarely
and carriageways cross the island, witnessing in the most perfect way the range goes down to zero and in summer it rarely exceeds
and variety of the population's economic activities, uniting settlements and 37 ° C. The prevailing temperatures range between
ports, and leading to rural areas or places of worship, such as monasteries and 10 ° and 35 °. The highest rainfall is in January and
monasteries . There are also areas where natural features are more prevalent, the lowest in July.

Landscapes
of great
beauty
7
The endless web of terraces extends throughout the island, forming sets of high aesthetic value that require immediate protection. Elements that
emphasize the particular features of the site are the rarity of the "straight", the play with light and shadow, the structural compositions on the walls
of the property's fences, the devices of the technique required by the material economy, the breaking of monotony in the gray slate and granite
from white marble and stainless steel etc.
But apart from these areas that are absolutely defined by human intervention, there are others of great distinct value, whether abandoned quarries,
or areas disrupted by stagnant water and air rocks. Such are the granite at Volax - known as "volleys" - and the disintegrating rocks of the Exo Meria,
mainly in the areas of Steno and Prophet Elias.
8
The boulders show spherical disintegration. Corrosion and chemical
disintegration convert granite from the stage of sound rock into that of
soil, with intermediate stages of wonderful - in this case spherical - forms.
The areas of the Volax Valley, Falatados Highland and the meadows are
the most important examples of this phenomenon at all stages and
constitute a "geotope" for the island.
9
Habitats
The island now has three habitats: Kolimbithra, Livada and Panormos.
The first and most important one is that of Kolimbithra. It is formed by a
river system that crosses the Comi - Kalloni river, which is fed by the
torrents Lazaros (crosses the Valley of the Mesa Meri) and Agapi (river
Grizas). It has a permanent supply of surface water, rich riparian flora and
fauna (mainly aquatic and water birds).
The second, that of Livada, is the one in the meadow, which is fed by the
torrent of the homonymous valley. It is of great interest in flora and fauna
and is associated with the granite role of the Volax - Falatados area, ending
in the western outskirts of the bay. (Natura). The most interesting case of
the Livada Habitat is that this habitat is the result of a ravine that in itself
has to exhibit features of great aesthetic and ecological value. It is
noteworthy that the appearance of the Mediterranean seal has also been
recorded in the bay of Livada.
The Panormos wetland is small in size and fed by the waters of the
Panormos Basin. It has remarkable populations of turtles, eels, ducks and
geese enjoying the care of the locals, as the habitat is on the edge of the
settlement, by the sea. But this is also the danger that threatens it, which is
nothing more than an extension of the settlement's construction.
10
Anthropogenic
environment
11
Characteristic of the island are the numerous settlements, the rural houses, scattered throughout Tinos, and the "steps" that were intended to
retain the little soil and to create flat surfaces for cultivation. The threshing floor, the avidstone - cell, the dovecotes, the mills and the dry stones are
the main human interventions in the landscape of the island. Rural houses are located in or near the fields cultivated by the people or in the area
grazing their flock. In this way they save material and labor by facilitating both their works.
The large number of settlements that are "scattered throughout the island and which, by geographical and other criteria, form regions, a division
dating back to a very old time: the Outer Places, the Upper Places, the Lower Places and the region of Chora Their good preservation to date is quite
impressive. The number of active settlements today is about 50, and there are 19 ruined villages. Of the 50 settlements, a large number (37) have
been declared traditional, while almost all of the settlements have been delimited. Some of them have a protection zone.
The present-day picture of the island is quite different from that which emerges from the descriptions of travelers and older writers. Today we find
stripped mountain ranges, vast fields and vast hillsides. If we look at older sources we will see that Tinos was in contrast to what is today very
cultivated and fertile, had many waters, and forests, which gradually disappeared. The prevalent Lifestyle determines the shape of the rural
landscape as well as the creation of homes and settlements.
(in the pdfs of the location themselves you will find relevant information about them)
Rural occupations
The main occupations of the island's inhabitants are agriculture, and farming. There has always been a combination of the two because they provide
each other with mutual services. In many cases, residents are also involved in beekeeping, shipping, fishing and more recently tourism.
One of the main occupations of the island was, from the Venetian period until the early years of the Revolution, the sericulture - a purely female
occupation. In addition to silkworm farming and silk production, a home-made craft for the manufacture of small articles such as gloves, was
developed for the purpose of export trade. Many residents of the island have been involved in post-liberation marble processing - Tinian Marble
Craftsmen - as marble craftsmen or locators as well as in the trade of marble slabs where they export the renowned marble of Tinos to countries
abroad. Tinian marble is included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

18-31 January 2020 18-30 April 2020 18-31 October 2020 18-31 August 2020
After four years of continuous presence on the island of Tinos, “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” introduces this year’s thematic Series of “Four (plus one)
elements”, which will last for a whole year, through four different seasons, until the fall of 2020.
Thematic Four (plus one) Elements are thematically structured over four interconnected series of physical Elements, Fire, Water, Air, Earth and
the concept of Time, attempting to create artistic works, events and activities over four different seasons, due to the attribute and
atmosphere of each element - always geared to the season in which each element is encountered. The “Four (plus one) Elements” is first and
foremost a multi-disciplinary site-specific long-term project, which aspires to incorporate beyond the full range of artistic and
research-scientific activity, both local communities and authorities and the location itself for project creation.
14
Fire / Water / Air / Earth - Time
“ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” borrows the four elements (fire, water, air, earth) - plus one, the element of time, comprising a thematic proposal that attempts to
integrate the landscape itself into our perception of space, time, seasons, time, matter, energy, nature, tradition and their various social manifestations.
Due to the extreme limitations of the common resources in the modern Anthropocene-age, as opposed to their alternating and transforming nature
according to the transience of the seasons, both the dual meaning of "season" and the heterogeneous features of matter emerge, of the earth, the
water, the air, the fire that make up the diverse landscape of the island of Tinos.
Artists, scientists, philosophers, researchers, local bodies, organizations from Greece and abroad are invited to choose one of the four natural elements,
which “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” has associated with four corresponding seasons, and to create works-spaces in a series of selected landmark locations in the whole
environment of the island (natural and anthropogenic). Based on the special atmosphere and characteristics of the earth, water, air, and fire that have
formed over time, “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” through the different natural elements, different seasons and different audiences, aims to reflection and active
dialogue, on contemporary issues of locality and culture, ecology and sustainability, highlighting the active participation of the unique landscape of
Tinos as an integral part of this gathering.
15
Fire / Water / Air / Earth - Time
The projects will be created (through residency) and will be presented respectively during the months of January, April, August and October 2020
throughout the island of Tinos.
The resulting works are ephemeral / temporary artworks, long workshops, interactive narratives, thematic paths, productions of
performance arts for “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” and the "Four (plus one) Elements", interacting with the selected topography of the island, scattered over it,
almost all year long.
(The artist, researcher, educator creates work, specifically for the area and its “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ” Thematic)
The choice of place within this context is as important as the creation of the project itself (for the local community) and possibly for other residency
participants.

Seasons / Audience / Locations
The lifestyle of the island and the density of its population vary
considerably according to the seasons, thus determining the
conditions of creation and direction, for the participants, from
season to season. In each season, the access and use of space, the
availability of locals and the composition of the audience are
completely different. The audience that will be able to participate
and watch the productions and events of “ΚΟΙΝΩΝΩ”in each
season will be completely different.

Goals
- Highlighting the role of the arts in the expanding of both the scientific, the social and the environmental dialogue.
- Communicating participants from different areas and fields of culture and science with the land
- Connecting a wider audience with contemporary art, utilizing the perspective of interaction, interdisciplinarity, participation
- Upgrading the relationship of the contemporary creator-citizen with the natural environment by making the natural elements - key
elements of creation as a key driver of sustainability and development in an emerging different context of harnessing cultural
heritage.
- Creating activities and interventions to preserve and restore the traditional elements of the island's cultural and natural heritage, in
order to enhance environmental sensitivity.
- Looking forward to an empirical creative gathering of the local community of many active creators and theorists in a non-urban
environment with reference to the diverse cultural and natural landscape of Tinos through different periods of hospitality throughout
the year.
