I. PROBLEM

Improper Waste Segregation is the contradictory of the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and
Recycle) in the idea of waste management. According to an article, “Improper Waste
Segregation and Waste Management,” the former is the improper human activity of
doing waste ladder that is reflected as one of the main causes of calamities in our
country. It is a negative action that leads to the hazardous consequences for the
environment.

INTERNATIONAL
The world is facing the largest garbage crisis — documented over two years by
photographer Kadir van Lohuizen — where it has been predicted to grow exponentially
in the coming decades as the population increases to which some people become
richer and increasingly migrate to urbanized areas. By 2025, according to a World Bank
study, the waste produced by cities around the globe will be enough to fill a line of
garbage trucks about 3,100 miles long every day.

As of today, the world now produces more than a billion tons of garbage a year,
which are incinerated and buried and exported and recycled daily.

Zero waste is a full-fledged movement today, one that is spreading from cities to
states to countries as well as the corporate world. The cities above show just a fraction of
the work that is happening, but represent a spectrum of approaches to the problem of
waste. The biggest barrier is the shift that needs to happen in the mindsets of everyone
who produces waste, which, of course, is all of us.

A great example would be Lagos which is a symbol of the worst reactions to the
world's garbage problems which waste are left unsorted or untreated by the city, it also
represents some of the best solutions as well. It is a city where waste has become an
enormous public policy challenge, a source of grave diseases but also a valuable
commodity. Across the city, local entrepreneurs and international businesses have
opened sorting and recycling plants that export plastics, metals and paper to China and
India.

As the population increases on a daily basis, so is the waste generated by an entire

population. It is very evident in countries such as China, India, and so on. Human wastes
have now created major environmental problems in global scale as these are found in
almost every corner of the world. Evidence shows that the ocean today have more
plastic than fish, natural water forms are now becoming unsafe, diseases are on the rise,
climate change has worsen throughout the years, and so on. Great emphasis must be
put on rehabilitating the world as researchers do have hard credible evidence that such
a large garbage problem can have a deadly impact to the population as well as the
state of the world.
NATIONAL
One problem that has not only risen in the Philippines but has endured through
countless years, is the garbage that has piled up and spread throughout both the cities
and the provinces of the country. The segregation of trash seems to not have any effect
nor has it been taught and practiced by majority of the Filipinos, proven by the sea of
rubbish that has covered the sands of Manila Bay and mixed with the oceans, or how
Boracay had to be closed and rehabilitated because of the lack of discipline to throw
litter in the proper place and the desperate pleas of the people of Palawan and Baguio
City to close their respective locations so that they would be able to preserve what they
are known for, which has been slowly dying because of too much trash and little to do
anything about it.

Although it is commonly known and repeatedly said to each and every person to
segregate their trash, save the environment and contribute to the society, it is alarming
how even after a mass clean-up of Manila Bay or how Boracay had opened up to tourists
temporarily after its rehabilitation, both were still as vulnerable to trash like before.

According to Tantuco (2018), despite the strong environmental activism among

Filipinos, the Philippines still suffers from a trash problem. There is the, “Ecological Solid
Waste Management Act of 2000,” or Republic Act 9003 which was said to be a good
solid waste management law, stated by a Greenpeace Philippines Campaigner Abigail
Aguilar; however, a lot more can be done in terms of implementation.

The Philippines generates an estimated 43,684 tons of garbage daily including

4,609 tons of plastic waste, according to government data. The national government
claims that it has done all it can, and that it is up to the local governments to get their
trash in order as well as warning the Filipino people to dispose of their garbage more
responsibly.

Even though environmental advocates disagree and says that the government
can do more, including pressuring multinational corporations to change their products,
it does not exclude normal, everyday citizens to help, which, in the end, may be crucial
in any process regarding proper waste management.
LOCAL
There is a huge problem in waste in localities specifically in Baguio City. The
mountainous city of Pines is being plagued with tremendous amount of garbage that
have taken a huge toll on the city’s financial resources.

The Commission on Audit (COA) made this observation in its 2017 annual audit
report for the country’s summer capital. COA said city officials must quickly address the
problem of solid waste management disposal as it drains city resources, making it cough
at least P472.46 million since 2011. The COA disclosed that the budget for hauling and
dumping garbage could balloon further unless the city government is able to put in
harness, a solid waste management disposal facility. State auditors lamented that the
expenses have denied the city government the implementation of other development
plans.
According to COA, the annual garbage disposal expenses, “could have been
used for a more significant development project of the City. Ben Rosario stated that the
commission lamented in its 2017 annual audit report.
This problem would worsen with every peak season that causes an influx of tourists
in Baguio City, specifically during the Panagbenga Festival. The city officials had urged
Baguio’s visitors must be reminded to be more conscientious in disposing of garbage.
Baguio used to be one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country,” Floresca said.
Now it has to hire additional street sweepers to clean up the huge volume of garbage
left by visitors who flock to Baguio’s major tourist events like the Panagbenga.

Tourists throw away their litter indiscriminately, said Emil Bert Floresca of the Solid
Waste Management Division under the City Environment and Parks Management Office.
He said three tons of garbage, which is almost a full truckload of garbage a week, was
collected along Session Road during the flower festival. Environment and Natural
Resources Regional Director Ralph Pablo agreed that with discipline there is no need to
hire an additional 30 sweepers during the Panagbenga to augment the 69 regular
sweepers.

Hopefully, the city could become like Puerto Princesa, where they don’t need
street sweepers because, “They have discipline among themselves,” Pablo said. The
regular sweepers are paid P472 a day while the sweeper hired solely for the Panagbenga
will be paid P300 a day for a week.

The large populations of tourists in Baguio for the events like Panagbenga 2018 for
example, was more or less 2 million tourists. Imagine if each of them throw even a single
plastic bag or candy wrapper, automatically would have a noticeable pile of trash, that
may one day rival the gigantic mountains that surrounds the Summer Capital.
B. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
Strawberry House Corporation has created a project entitled, “ECOSPORT,” from
the word ecology which deals with the physical surroundings. The plan for the creation
of this project is because it has been noticed that improper waste segregation had
become a notable issue not only in Baguio City or the Philippines, but throughout the
whole world. Strawberry House Corporation has the desire to contribute for the
betterment of the environment and would like to show their care by helping to create
an inclusive project for a way to improve the surroundings of each and every community.

The purpose of this project is to have cleaner and healthier surroundings. So in

order to achieve that, as each and every person would walk through every street and
everywhere, they would start to pick up the trash that their eyes would spot. This project
would include picking up litters like candy wrappers which is considered as a small waste.
The aim is to help reduce garbage that are being thrown in improper places such as
parks, canals, hallways of buildings, classrooms and a lot more. Strawberry House
Corporation wants people to realize the importance of discipline and provide them
reasons that could motivate them and put the fun into the activities relating to the
segregation of waste whilst teaching them to form an everyday habit of cleaning and
managing their garbage. So that in every actions they do, they would learn that they
have a contribution in either harming or protecting the earth.

This company is not only after a clean community but also to spread awareness
about the significance of keeping and caring for the environment. In order to do that,
the project also aims to build camaraderie among the citizens of different communities
and build a partnership that would hugely impact the totality of the city. It will have a
possibility of connecting people together and strengthen their relationships. To start
changes within the community would also mean the reduction of the problem with
improper waste management.

The battle would not only start with Strawberry House Corporation, but in each
and every one living in the communities that makes up the city of Baguio. Proper
discipline and caring actions for the environment will result in the betterment of the
surroundings not only for human beings but as well as for animals; this is done for the good
of the current and the following generations.
C. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
GOALS
One of the goals that Strawberry House Corporation(SBEH) is aiming to
achieve is the reduction of the wastes that are being thrown in inappropriate
places within the university.
It expands to making one university an example that other schools would
follow and reach out through the different neighborhoods of Baguio City.

Another would be to develop and innovate projects with the use of

recycling what is considered as trash and make it possible to use them in the
everyday lives of the citizens.

The most important goal would be to create a long-time clean and green
community; through the students of the university that will not only do it inside their
school, but eventually form a habit that will be seen even outside of their learning
centers.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of SBEH through the project, “ECOSPORT,” would be to make
a variety of people realize the importance of discipline that in every action they
do, may or may not harm the earth. This would be done through an inclusive race
that allows them to put their ideas together and launch their own projects that
companies and Civil Society Organizations(CSOs) may use not only for their
businesses but contribute in the betterment of the communities.

METHODOLOGY
Project ECOSPORT, a project to be conducted by the Strawberry House
Corporation (SBEH) which aims to lessen the risk of improper waste segregation
through a competition form of activity. It has been observed that this is one of the
major problems in the environment at present.

In this project, SBEH Corp. headed by their Chairman of all Board will
conduct an inclusive project to be implemented, “ECOSPORT,” to be held at the
University of the Cordilleras, Governor Pack Road, Baguio City for a period of one
month. The target date of the activity will start on June 1, 2019 and will end on
June 24, 2019.

The activity will run as follows:

 The project “ECOSPORT” will be a one-month activity.

 This project will start on June 1, 2019 and will end on June 30, 2019.
 This project will focus at the University of the Cordilleras, Governor Pack
Road, Baguio City.
 This is a competition for the different departments of the said school
excluding post graduate courses.
 This will be a competition on collecting wastes and garbage to be
segregated as well and at the same time raising awareness in concern with
improper segregation of waste.
 By the end of the activity, the participants should be able to create
something practical and yet an artistic thing using the things they’ve
collected, in order to teach them that those things may still have a use.

The SBEH Corp. will coordinate to the said school in concern with this activity.
There will be a confirmation by the school before this event could happen. To
make this activity more successful, SBEH Corp. will have a partnership with
agencies such as Green Peace Philippines. With its partnership, it will be a big help
for expenses such as budget for the ceremonies and for the certificates and
trophies.

Before this event, SBEH Corp. will coordinate as well to the different
departments. Participating departments will be instructed how this project will
work on.

In the competition proper, participants or the different departments of the

school will have a race of collecting wastes or other garbage that also needs to
be segregated properly. There should be at least 50 representatives per
department for this project. Among the 50 representatives, one (1) representative
should act as the Team Leader. The purpose of the team leader is for easier
dissemination of announcements and other information.

Qualifications for Participants are as follows:

 Must be currently enrolled in the University.

 Must be physically fit to undergo such activity.
 Must be fully-hearted and willing to join.

On the first day of the event, that will fall on the first Monday of the said month,
participants should collect at least 300 wastes, which could range from candy
wrappers to plastics and more as well as should be properly segregated.
Whichever department wins will earn respective prizes.

On the second day of the event, that will fall on the second Monday of the
said month, participant should collect at least 500 wastes and wrappers and
should be properly segregated also.
Lastly, on the third day and third Monday, they should collect at least 1000
wastes. Take note that in this activity, participants will not be excused on their
classes, so, it is advisable that participants will do such activity on their free times.

Moreover, during the duration of the project, SBEH Corp. will take photos and
videos for documentation purposes for their company. Rest assured that those
photos and videos will only be intended for those purposes.

In collecting wastes, the rules are as follows:

 Should only be in and around school premises.

 Should be segregated in three categories: Biodegradable. Non-
biodegradable and Recyclable.
 All participants should join.
 Must be submitted to the person in command by the end of the respective
date.
 Participants should provide their own garbage bags or sacks in collecting.
 Participants can do their own strategies as long as they meet the
requirements.

For the last Monday of the said month (June 24, 2019), it will serve as the day
for closing and awarding ceremonies hosted by SBEH Corp. All the participants
are required to grace the occasion. Other than the participants, Deans of the
different departments are also invited and as well as the President of the University
of the Cordilleras. Closing Ceremony will still be held at the University’s Theatre.

There will be respective winners in each day of the race. Each day of the race,
there should be three (3) winners: 1 Gold Award for the Winner, 1 Silver Award for
the 1st Runner-up and 1 Bronze Award for the 2nd Runner-up. The wins will be
attributed to their colleges. Respective winners will be awarded with Certificate
of Recognition signed by S.B.E.H. Corporation’s Chairman of all Board and the
President of the University. All participants will be awarded with Certificates of
Participation.

For the Over-all Champions, whose wins will be counted by the end of the
month, would be rewarded with a trophy and the power to create new flavors
for the company who will release it. The winner would receive a dozen of any
pastry he or she would choose and the flavor this individual has created would
be donated to daycare centers.

The good thing about this project is raising awareness on improper waste
segregation and at the same time, learning and being motivated to take care of
the environment whilst also deepening their knowledge on how to reuse these
wastes in another practical way in order to contribute with the reduction of
wastes. In lieu with this, one additional goodness about this activity is it helps the
increase the life of landfills risk to the ecosystem goes down because of the fact
that wastes are being segregated.

After this project, it is expected that SBEH Corp. should meet their objectives
mainly on raising awareness in concern with Improper Waste Segregation. Also, it
is expected that all participants should realize how important wastes segregation
is. Furthermore, after this project, SBEH Corp. will thank the University of the
Cordilleras for making this event happed. SBEH Corp. will also thank its partners
and sponsor.
BENEFITS
The people who will benefit in this project are students, adults and sanitary
engineers. Students will benefit in such a way that they will know and understand
at their young age that waste segregation should be followed for the betterment
of the environment and to the next generation since waste segregation costs
nothing and takes hardly any extra time. It’s a matter of understanding and more
about responsible behavior. They will also learn to form new things that could
pave the way of creating new items and using recycled wastes in practical ways
that would lessen the improper waste management of the school.

Also, adults will benefit in this project by means of being an example to their
children, being a model in solving this kind of problem. Moreover, sharing ideas
on how to lessen the risk of this problem.

Project ECOSPORT would lessen the workload of cleaners such as the

sanitary engineers by having other students who are in the same premises to be
more involved with cleaning and keeping the university at its finest as well as
saving their time in cleaning and letting them rest.

Waste segregation is important because it makes the recycling process so

much easier. If an individual’s waste is separated, it will be known exactly how
and where to recycle it, making the waste management process as straight-
forward as possible.

Overall, everyone should benefit in this project because segregated waste

reduces health and safety related risks to waste pickers and to the ecosystems
around the waste treatment and disposal sites. As for the company and its
partners, they would be able to reach out to more schools by making this
university as an example and gain more sponsorships and develop more ways
that would not only include the universities of Baguio City, but would continuously
grow and include communities that would innovate on the project to fit each
and every neighborhood and allow them to recreate and reuse the end-results
of the activity.
