EVOLUTION OF CURRICULUM

 Religious Motive

 Religious Education makes a distinctive contribution to the school

curriculum by developing pupils' knowledge and understanding
of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions
and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and
cultures.
 It enables pupils to consider and respond to a range of
important questions related to their own spiritual development,
the development of values and attitudes and fundamental
questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life.
 It concerned with the deep meaning that individuals and groups
make of their experiences and how this helps them give purpose
to their lives. It provides opportunities to explore make and
respond to the meanings of those experiences in relation to the
beliefs and experiences of others as well as to one's own
experiences.

 Political Motive
 Curriculum development can be considered as partly political
because the planning stage of the curriculum development
process is said to be a lay political activity.
 First and foremost, curriculum planning is designed to ensure
adequate representation of the opinions of all the major
stakeholders in education. In curriculum planning, the emphasis is
on the interest of the people who matter most in education. For
instance, teachers, students, parents and religious bodies among
others who are stakeholders are represented at the planning
stage not because of their competence or technical know-how
but because of their interest.
 In addition, the various stakeholder groups compete among
themselves in order to get their agenda into the national
curriculum. These stakeholders compete among themselves by
articulating their views, making cases and seeking the support of
other representatives in the course of their deliberations

 Utilitarian Motive
 Utilitarianism is a family of consequentialist ethical theories that
promotes actions that maximize happiness and well-being for the
majority of a population.
UTILITY
 It tends to produce benefit, advantage, pleasure, good, or
happiness to prevent the happening of mischief, pain, evil, or
unhappiness to the party whose interest is considered.

 Mass Education
 Mass education has two components. The first is to impart
knowledge to children that they need to effectively function as a
member of society.
 This includes literacy, basic arithmetic and a basic understanding
of civics in order to participate in our republic. At a higher level
this imparts technical knowledge to various professionals,
technicians and artisans.
 The second function is a sifting process, designed to separate the
wheat from the chaff. It recognizes that not everyone can
become a doctor, lawyer or engineer. It gives employers a basis
for choosing the most appropriate employees for various jobs.

ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF CURRICULUM

 A curriculum is important in an educational system. It helps one plan

the education process or procedure for a given period of time (a term,
session, lesson period etc).
 Curriculum consists of continuous chain of activities needed to
translate educational goals into concrete activities, materials and
observable change in behaviour. A lesson plan for example is a
curriculum used by the teacher in the classroom.
 Curriculum development is a purposeful activity.
 It is undertaken to design or redesign for the realization of certain
specific educational objectives.
 The curriculum is the heart of the student’s college/school experience.
 The curriculum should be reviewed and revised on a regular basis so
that it is able to serve the changing needs of both students and
society.

Following points iterates the needs and importance of curriculum

development:
1. Clear purpose and goals

 Curriculum construction provides written curricular goals which

are nothing but intended student development outcomes. These
goals and objectives are specified in considerable detail and in
behavioral language.

2. Continuous assessment and improvement of quality

 Valid and reliable assessment of curriculum is necessary. The

curriculum followed by an institution should be reviewed regularly
in order to maintain its effectiveness in regards to changing
needs of the society as a whole.

3 .rational sequence:

 In a curriculum educational activities are carefully ordered in

developmental sequence. This developmental sequence helps
to form a well-planned (or coherent) curriculum based on
intended goals and outcomes of the curriculum and its
constituent courses.

4. Making strategy in teaching and learning

 Curriculum development helps in suggesting suitable teaching-

learning strategies, teaching methods, instructional materials etc.
It helps in providing for the proper implementation of the
curriculum on the part of teachers and learners.

5. Helps in the selection of learning experiences

 Curriculum development is needed for appropriate selection

and organization of learning experiences. It helps in the selection
of study matter and other activities so that learners are able to
acquire goals and objectives of teaching.
