Walking Alone
Act 1
Narrator: It was a quiet, chilly summer night. Kara Anastaisa Farr has just had her junior year
homecoming dance. She has a great time with her friends and boyfriend, Dylan, at the Hard
Rock Hotel in Downtown San Diego. Everything is tinted with perfection and it is a night that
she will never forget. The dance ends and she says her goodbyes to her friends and boyfriend.
Kara walks out of the hotel and to the parking garage where her car is located at. The air around
her is filled with the hum of distant nightclubs and the occasional car alarm. She is filled with
adrenaline and high alertness while walking through the dark streets of Downtown San Diego to
her car. Her nerves twinge when she feels a group of eyes behind her and can hear their distant
footsteps.
Kara [whispers to herself]: Breathe Kara you’re probably imagining things. Just 5 more blocks
Narrator: Kara is an exceptional student. She has perfect grades, a great group of friends, and a
very supportive boyfriend. She is extremely cautious of everything she does and makes sure
everything is perfect. She gets made fun of by her friends for being a perfectionist, but that’s
how she gets her perfect grades. She never fails to disappoint and is always looking for ways to
go above expectations. She is like the mom friend of the group. Kara deeply cares about her
friends, but with a little push, she can still go crazy and party. She doesn’t care about what

people think, but she still puts a lot of effort into her appearance. Daily she wakes up early to do
her hair and makeup in the morning before school. She picks out her clothes the night before
She picks up her pace. You can hear the clicking of her heels echo through the dark, quiet streets
of downtown. Kara then takes out her whistle and starts fiddling with it in her hands, being
cautious in case she needs to use it. Her breathing starts to quicken, her throat feels like it’s
Kara [whispering to herself while looking up at the sky with strained eyes]: Jesus please help
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Narrator: Kara turns the corner and is ambushed in front of a twenty-four-hour 7-11
convenience store. Her scream is full of terror and panic. Her life flashes before her eyes. She
sees everything happen in slow motion. This moment feels like it lasts an eternity, but lasts only
thirty seconds.
Stange man 3 [Said with panic]: Run, we gotta get outta here-look out man!
Pete [Screaming in rage]: F off you crackheads. Get off my damn property!
Pete hits strange man 1 in the knee pits with the stick and the other 2 men run off with Kara’s
Pete [In a worried tone]: Crap are you okay?? Do you want me to call the cops? I’m gonna call-
Kara [panicking and full of adrenaline]: NOOOOO, DO NOT CALL THE COPS. My parents,
Kara [snarky]: If I knew them do you think they would’ve stalked me and beat me up and stole
all of my stuff! Crap did they- they took my [crying and voice shaking] My mom, ohh my mom,
Long pause, Pete is stuck and doesn’t know what to say. Kara is traumatized.
Kara [shaking, both physically and verbally]: No, nah that’s alright. I am walking to my car like
3 blocks away.
Pete [More relieved]: Let me walk you there. You could use the company. And I promise I
won’t hurt you. [Pete holds out the stick.] Here, take my stick.
Kara quickly jerks away, believing he’ll hurt her, but then takes the stick with shaking hands.
Kara: Th-thank you. I-I would really appreciate that. [looks down at the floor]
Kara and the strange man walk to her car in silence. It takes them five minutes. When Kara
arrives at her car she hands Pete his stick and gets into her car and slowly sits down. The first
thing she does is start her engine and lock her doors. She takes off her heels and the adrenaline
of the night begins to wear off. She takes a deep breath and all the events start flooding back to

Act 2
Narrator: Kara finally arrive at home, her mascara smeared down her face from her tears and
her hair is a wreck. She pulls down her car mirror and attempts to clean up. The light was dim
and comes from the streetlamp across the street of her cul de sac. Through the front window,
Kara sees her mom sitting in a dark room with her face illuminated by the TV. She notices that a
bruise is forming on her right forearm. She gets out of her car, letting out a sigh of despair. She
leaves her heels in the backseat. Kara walks to her front door from the street curb. She feels the
wet grass beneath her feet and the foggy air on her cheeks. She steps onto the sidewalk, walks up
four steps, puts on her best smile, and opens the front door.
Ashley [turns her head towards the front door and embracingly and enthusiastically says]: Hey
Narrator: Ashley Farr, a loveable kindergarten teacher. As a mother, she only wants what’s best
for Kara. Since she is a kindergarten teacher she sees everything in a positive light and does
every task with enthusiasm. She deeply cares for Kara to the point where she thinks rationally
Kara quickly runs out of her mom’s view onto the stairs.
Kara [trying to hold back her tears, anger, frustration, and fear]: It was great, mom. I’m really
Ashley: Alright then, get some rest and you’ll have to tell me everything tomorrow.
Narrator: It is Sunday morning. Ashley walks into Kara’s room and sees that she is sleeping.
Ashley smiles and walks out of the room. Sunday continues with Kara sleeping in and eventually
getting up to stare out of her window and cry. Her parents assume that she is tired and leave her

alone. Her dog, Mickey, checks up on her periodically and loves Kara. Mickey stays with Kara
Act 3
Narrator: It is Monday morning and Kara has no motivation to get up. Her room is dark, the
only light comes from her phone. Her alarm finally goes off, but she just lays there staring at the
ceiling already awake. The entire night she repeatedly kept waking up from nightmares of events
Kara gets ready for her day. She walks into the bright hallway and squints from disorientation.
Her mom yells up the stairs that today would be very hot (90 degrees Fahrenheit). Kara wears
jeans and a long sleeve shirt. She tries to cover up her bruising and feels too vulnerable not to be
covered up. She doesn’t even bother to do her makeup or hair like she usually does every day.
Instead, Kara just walks downstairs and tries to act like everything is normal. She pulls her hand
Jacob [happily]: Good morning, Kara. You must be well-rested. You slept all day yesterday.
Narrator: Jacob Farr, an astrophysicist and loving father. As an astrophysicist, Jacob is very
busy and rarely has time to spend with Kara, but always tries to find time for her. His job is like
a second home to him since he always spends time there. At home he brings his work with him
by constantly getting bombarded with phone calls. Nonetheless, he tries to be there for Kara
through everything.
Kara [empty but trying to act okay]: Yeah, sure. I’m great.
Ashley [encouragingly]: You better hurry up, Kara or you’re gonna be late for school. I put
Kara [stops and is very serious]: Mom, Dad I have to talk to you about something that happened
on Saturday night. I-I can’t right now, just not now. Can we talk when you guys get home?
Both speaking over each other and approaching Kara to hug her.
Ashley and Jacob look at each other, smiling, and nod. They run towards Kara with open arms
Ashely and Jacob [Said with immense enthusiasm]: We love you, Kara!
Kara [avoiding the hug by running to the front door, smiling a little bit]: I love you too, I gotta
get to school.
Narrator: Jacob and Ashley go about their workday and Kara drives to school.
Kara arrives at school and walks through the front doors. Her friends notice that something is off.
Kara will usually run-up to her friends and fill them in on her weekend. Instead, she walks to her
Elizabeth: What’s up? [Elizabeth looks at Kara up and down and says sarcastically] Wow you
look-wow…
Narrator: Elizabeth Carter is the polar opposite of Kara. She’s sarcastic and not the greatest
student. She is always winging it during class and doesn’t care about her grades. She does the
homework while the teacher is collecting it, when in group projects she relies on someone to do

her part, and she barely even does the bare minimum. She’s always looking for validation and a
place to fit in because her parents don’t think she’s good enough. She brings out the reckless side
of Kara and is always looking for an excuse to do something crazy; whether through a bet or
dare, she’s willing to do it. She is more of the carefree friend in the group. She typically wears
high waisted mom jeans with a band t-shirt, or a black or white loose top tucked in and a pair of
old skool vans to complete her outfit. She wears a minimal amount of makeup and some days she
Maya: Yeah b what happened you to? Had a little bit more fun after homecoming without us
Narrator: Maya Hart is a little more like Kara. She’s a remarkable student and her parents are
proud of all the achievements she’s done. She is constantly looking to one-up someone in class
and over exceeds expectations in assignments and projects. She’s boy crazy and has commitment
issues, meaning she’s never had a boyfriend, but lots of guys chase her. She’s not as crazy as
Elizabeth, but she’s not as mellow as Kara, so she evens them out and brings out a good balance
between them. All she wants is to fit in, so she always wears the latest trends and has the latest
products. Every day she comes to school with a full face of makeup, a scrunchie on her wrist,
and a hoodie from whatever boy she might be talking to at the moment. Occasionally, she might
come in with a dress or skirt on with her Hydro Flask in her hand.
Elizabeth just rolls her eyes while Kara freezes, remembering what happened that night. Kara
stares ahead of her, holding her locker door in her right hand and her Hydro Flask in her left
hand.
Kara [looks at Elizabeth in confusion]: No, but something else did happen. [Starts tearing up
and looks down] Whi-while I was walking back to the m-my car, I-I got attacked by 3 guys. But
Both Elizabeth and Maya just look at her speechless, trying to figure out if she is joking.
Maya [not believing her, going along with the “joke”]: Okay, but were they cute at least? Like
can you hit me up with them ayeee [nudges Elizabeth to make her agree and starts laughing]
Elizabeth [pretending to believe Kara]: Yeah clearly she’s joking. [sarcastically] What she
really meant to ask was is the 7/11 dude cute? Because damn he can hit us up with those free
Maya [Still laughing]: I like your style Liza, I like your style
Kara [Stares blankly at Elizabeth and Maya]: You’ve got to be kidding me.
Kara tries to pass through a hall full of students. She goes to her first class, which is also her
Ms. Jackson [surprised but delighted]: Kara! Good morning. Since you are here early, why
don’t we talk about organizing that spoken word poetry event you have been so persistent on.
Narrator: Sarah Jackson, an English teacher who happens to be Kara’s favorite teacher. She is
very charismatic and encouraging to her students. When Kara needs a pick me up or advice, Ms.
Trus and Vizon 9
Jackson is always there to provide for her. She doesn’t need coffee or energy drinks to fuel her,
she constantly has high energy and has a positive outlook on everything.
Kara stares at the ceiling with tears rolling down her cheeks.
Ms. Jackson [full of energy and smiling]: Saved by the bell! Let's talk further about this soon.
The class files in. Kara observes their happiness and conversations. She remembers what it feels
like to be happy. She can’t bring herself to miss the feeling. Kara feels empty and violated.
Despite sitting in a room full of people, she has never felt more alone.
Narrator: Everything is a blur to Kara as the class continues. The sound of her teacher in the
background was just muffled as the events of a couple of nights ago keep replying in her head.
She begins to think that the men attacked her because of what she was wearing (her homecoming
dress and heels). She calls herself stupid for walking alone in the dark. Then she remembers that
she never asked to be attacked, she just was. She tells herself, “I am the victim, not the
The bell to end class rings. Kara does not get up out of her seat. She hasn’t even heard the bell.
Ms. Jackson [questioningly and concerned]: Kara, yoohoo, Kara, the bell has rung. It is time for
a break.
Kara snaps out of her daze and hurriedly gets up out of her seat and swings her backpack on her
back.
Kara thinks about her boyfriend on the way out of the classroom. She walks to their usual spot to
talk to him.
Trus and Vizon 10
Narrator: Dylan Holland, the typically jock, but academically smart. He plays multiple sports
throughout the seasons, football and lacrosse. He takes his studies very seriously and doesn’t let
sports get in the way of his education. Although he deeply cares for Kara, he is on the constant
edge of worry that she might be cheating on him. He is very self-conscious to the point where it
can overrule his decision making and he can let his emotions get the best of him.
Dyan pulls Kara into a hug, she tenses up, and doesn’t hug him back.
Kara [seriously]: I need to talk to you, Dylan. I think you’re the only person who can
understand.
Kara [quietly]: So, when, when I was [tearing up] walking to my car from homecoming, I-I was
attacked. Attacked by 3 men, they stole everything. [Kara rolls up her sleeve] This is how I got
Dylan [angrily]: You seriously think I’m gonna believe this sob story. You are just trying to
cover up for the fact that you cheated on me at an afterparty after hoco. You didn’t respond to
any of my texts over the weekend and now you’re being so reclusive.
Kara [gets up and throws her backpack over her shoulders, crying more and shaking]: No,
that's not even, no. I thought you would support me, but aaagghhhhhhh!
Dylan [scoffs and rolls his eyes]: Right, like those tears are going to convince me. Whatever
Kara runs to the front office and tells the administrator that she is sick and needs to go home.
Kara calls her mom. Ashley is on the way to pick her up. Kara sits in a chair in the office crying.
Act 4
Narrator: When Kara’s mom picks her up, she takes her home, where her dad is. The car ride is
quiet and weighty. Ashley tries to turn on the radio, but Kara automatically turns it off and stares
out of the window. Her dad comes home early to be with his daughter. Kara has never been
absent from school. Jacob is alerted by the jingling noise of the keys outside the front door. He
ends his phone conversation and stands up from sitting on the living room couch.
Jacob [looks up from phone]: Hey lovebug, how are you feeling? Why’d your mom have to
Ashley [sits Kara down next to her on the couch and rubs her back]: Oh honey, we’re here to
listen.
Kara [tearing up]: I-I was attacked while I was walking back from the dance.
Kara is fully in tears. She pauses and tries to form her words.
Kara [stuttering]: It was 3 hooded guys and they took everything! Even your pearl bracelet
mom. I’m I am...But luckily this 7/11 guy came out and helped me-
Jacob [in disbelief and anger, staring at Kara with angry eyes]: You've got to be kidding me
Jacob: And you lost your mom’s bracelet? That is an heirloom from your great grandma! How
Ashely [frustrated and rash]: I bet they attacked you because of what you were wearing. Do you
even know how stupid it is for you, A WOMAN [emphasize on the word woman], to be walking
Kara [sobbing uncontrollably and unable say full words]: But, mom, dad, I, I got atta-
Jacob realizes the extremity of what had happened to his daughter. He remembers how much he
loves his daughter. His expression turns from one of anger to understanding and compassion.
Both Ashely and Jacob sight and look at each other for six seconds.
Jacob [looking at Ashley]: Now is not the time for blame, honey. Our daughter needs us right
now. [looking at Kara] Kara, I am so sorry that this happened to you and that your mom and I
reacted so rashly to you. Know this, baby, we love you and want to help you.
Ashely [whispers to Jacob]: Make an appointment for Kara to see a professional counselor. She
Ashely turns toward Kara and touches her right arm, where she is bruised. Kara flinches. Ashely
looks at Kara with warm, questioning eyes. Kara rolls up her sleeve. Ashely lookas a Kara. Kara
Ashely [compassionately]: Oh my sweet girl, I love you so very much. Just cry, its okay to cry.
Let it all out. I love you and we will get to the other side of this together.
Curtain.
Narrator: Kara sits up in her chair with a box of tissues in her lap. She is sitting in a counselor's
office. The counselor’s words sound like static in Kara’s ears. Kara replays Saturday night and
all of the events leading up to this moment in her head. She feels lost, alone, and empty.
Counselor [seriously with little compassion]: Your parents filled me in on what happened to
Kara [with some strength and trauma in her heart, she whispers]: I am alone. No one cares.
Curtain closes.
The end.
