1. Synopsis
This assignment aim is to allow students to design and configure a LAN topology by applying
basic principles of wired and wireless network, together with configuration of network devices
(including routers & switches) by using Cisco Packet Tracer simulation tool. Students are also
expected to be able to design their IP addressing scheme with subnetting to segment their
network. Part of the practical assessment in this assignment will also be evaluated through
practical test conducted in the mid of the semester.

This assignment is divided into 2 sections.

 Section-1 : Network Design - Group & Individual (70%)
 Section-2 : Practical Test (30%)

2. Assessed Learning Outcomes:

CLO2: Follow instruction to design a local area network and segmenting a network using
simulation tools (P3, PLO2).
CLO3: Work in a team to propose a network design based on the given scenario (A3, PLO5).

Note:
PLO2 –Practical Skills,
PLO5 – Social Skills, Team Skills and Responsibility.

3. Section 1: Network Design & Implementation (70 marks)

Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) is one of the well-known private
Universities in Malaysia. The University has decided to expand their business to have a dedicated
training centre managed by APU Corporate Training Services. The new premises is located in South
City area, consists of 2 blocks of building dedicatedly for Corporate Training office, Testing Centre
(Lab), and classroom / labs for training which can also be open to public to rent out for their events
and trainings. There is one server room and staff lounge located in the office building, meanwhile the
training building has cafeteria and a control room for the Technical Assistant to be on standby to
manage and monitor the network.

You are appointed as a network technician to work with the team in proposing for a suitable network
design for the new premises. As part of your task, work in group to identify the requirement of the
network design and conduct a research to propose for a suitable topology diagram with the necessary
devices, technology and IP addressing scheme to make it work. Your research should include :
 Layout of the building
 Number of hosts (per department / building)
 Justification of the Topology
 IP Adressing scheme
 Network devices
 Performance / Reliability / Security / Manageability controls

The findings and outcome of your research should be arranged in a proper flow to be presented to the
Technical team who are involved in the full design of the network. In addition, prepare a Cisco Packet
Tracer diagram as a proof of concept for your research work.

General Instructions

1. You are required to complete the assignment in a group of not more than 4 members. No
individual submission is allowed for the 1st attempt.
2. You are required to build a complete computer network environment for the scenario,
supported with a good research work.
3. Design the floor plan using Microsoft Visio and provide configuration of the logical network
diagram using Cisco Packet Tracer. Submit the softcopy of floor plan and network diagram
(configuration) together with the assignment.
4. As part of project management, you are required to develop a Gantt chart (project plan) that
indicates clearly the activities that are required in order for the project to be a success.
5. Attach the completed Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Marking Scheme in your final
report. WBS must be signed and agreed by all group members.
6. Your report must be typed using Microsoft Word with Times New Roman font size 12. Word
count 3500 with +/- 10% words. You need to include a word count at the end of the report. Report
should be in 1.5 spacing.
7. The report has to be well presented and should be typed. Submission of reports that are
unprofessional in its outlook will not fare well when marks are allocated.
8. Your report must combine all the deliverables in one coherent document.
9. Ensure that the report is printed on standard A4 (210 X 297 mm) sized paper. Paper weight of 80
grams and above is highly recommended.
10. The report should have a one (1”) margin all around the page as illustrated below:

11. The assignment should attach front cover, table of contents and marking scheme. A transparent
plastic sheet can be placed in front of the report to protect the front cover.
12. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will automatically be awarded zero (0) mark.
13. All information, figures and diagrams obtained from external sources must be referenced using
the Harvard referencing system accordingly.

*IMPORTANT*

You have to hand in your assignment (hardcopy & softcopy) on time with the Coursework
Submission and Feedback Form.

4. Section 2: Practical Test (30 marks)

This section is to evaluate student’s individual practical skills in completing the assignment using
Cisco Packet Tracer as the simulator. The practical test will be focusing on similar scope of Section
1, only that it will be tested individually in the exam condition. The Practical test will evaluate
student’s ability to perform these task:

 Design the network topology (cabling and interfaces)

 Subnetting the IP address (segmenting the network)
 Configuring the interfaces with appropriate IP addressing plan, default gateway and routing.
 Other additional configuration (depending on the scope of the assignment for that intake)

Evaluation will be done through observation during the session and based on successful completion
of all tasks within the given time (2 hours).

Important Instructions:
 Lecturer will evaluate the packet tracer network diagram immediately at the place of practical
test. Students need to ensure that their work has been evaluated before leaving.
 Students are required to save their Cisco Packet Tracer file and submit the softcopy together with
the final assignment.
